final animation. if given time i would have added a clip of peaceful, scenic nz for the contrast and i wanted to overlay more solid colours on the animations to let them stand out slightly more.

website walkthrough - most of the website was done by charlie so i could focus on the posters, but we both had a lot of input in each other’s work to create a cohesive style

second poster down is the final for the series “The Season of Whenua” (CMYK file). i grabbed a photo of the background - the fire and plants just in front and cut the trees behind the fire out. Next i added a process which i had to apply to each photo i added as a layer. i converted each photo into grayscale and duplicated it. on the bottom layer of the photo i added a coloured (usually orange) layer which i clipped on and changed the “normal” effect to darkness, multiply or overlay. Above this i added the duplicated grayscale photo and set it to linear burn or colour burn. depending on the images, i would add more colour or duplicated layers on top and mess around with opacities but i found that i could make a photo look somewhat colour-blocked whilst retaining plenty of detail. I included the use of the orange in the flames, burning forestry, the air bombs and New Zealand flag to further enforce the message of protecting whenua and NZ’s involvement with Agent Orange.

First poster is the development and final - we have decided for it to be the ‘premiere’ poster for the series of plays, which is ‘Nature of Man” (file is in cmyk) green dude is the placeholder on the website for “Peaceful man” - the use of green colour (softer looking greens) and the flowers which contrast to the military uniform relates back to the message of trying to decrease war to nurture the land. Mountain is at Lake Pukaki to “Home, Land and Sea” - we spun this to show our land being destroyed instead of war zones overseas which New Zealand has been involved in - the base of the song is looking after our land but we should try and treat all whenua with the same respect and appreciation we hold for ours

poster research - looking at the block colours and oranges in particular. the first photo is what i want to use as a “Peaceful Man” cover photo on the website (when buying tickets). Charlie and I have also decided on the colour scheme of the website - yellow, orange and black, which will create a nice colour contrast and is complimentary to the posters.

first critique (type in this was an example/place holder for what i would write in the final and the colours aren't as intense when printed - CMYK file) I held Agent Orange in mind when i made this poster, and showed this through the smoke coming out of the gas mask  -  a lot of soldiers in Vietnam inhaled Agent Orange which caused many diseases such as Parkinson's disease, several forms of cancer and diabetes. As New Zealand was crucial to the producing and supplying of Agent Orange to the U.S Military, I added the NZ flag to the soldier’s sleeve as a patch. notes: - title should be bigger - change type - make it smaller, as an A2 print, type doesn't need to be that big

poster draft i like the postcard vibe with the bombs standing out in the frame, it’s a quirky wee juxtaposition. it doesn't need all of the times and details of the play - probably just the dates - also need to include website link to buy tickets, 30th Bats anniversary info and a short description of the season of whenua

Added a backdrop of footage from Asian communist war scenes - predominantly Vietnam War footage, as the Vietnam war was where New Zealand supplied the U.S Military with Agent Orange, a herbicide used to eliminate forest coverings and crops. I might make the background black and white and the animation red to make it stand out more. i also want to cut ‘Nature of Man’ so the drums are shortened, after which the second verse is inserted; “Blame it on the Bible, blame it on the war Blame it on the governor that you voted for Dictator dining on the Eagles purse Red moon is rising up above the Earth” If we have the time, i would also like to include a peaceful scenic animation of a New Zealand landmark to show the juxtaposition of how we treat our country compared to the treatment countries have received (eg Vietnam) during wars that we have assisted in. It serves as a call to action - if we all dealt with conflicts in discussion rather than violence, particularly when it involves conflict on an international scale, we would be drastically helping the environment in a decrease of chemicals released, raging destructive fire and bombing as well as a decrease on resources mined or crafted in such a way which harms the environment, and of course, the decrease of deaths in humans. If we learn to support each other on a global standing in nurturing and sustainably benefiting off of the land we live on (and instead of focussing on political bullshit and actually taking action) then we could perhaps not only restore what has been damaged by humankind over the last 50 years but improve on having a more environmental-friendly way-of-life.

Animation by Charlie. The animation is based on the communist wars in Asia, which we plan to link to New Zealand’s involvement of these wars in the posters and web design.  We will show the animation as an ad on YouTube and/or Instagram and link the website in the description so people may read up on The Season of Whenua and purchase tickets efficiently.  The fast-paced and intense scenes of the animation combined with the beating drums and soulful lyrics of ‘Nature of Man’ will hopefully pull people in so they can immerse themselves in the exhilarating clip and peak the audience’s interest in the plays further. We chose to portray our meaning of “Whenua” through this animation by focusing on the deaths and damage New Zealand helped to cause during the Asian communist wars. It’s a reminder that we shouldn't only be trying to look after our land and our Whenua, but everyone’s connection to, and protection of their land, especially those who are losing theirs to natural disasters and in particular, war - which is something that mankind can control and prevent.

second moodboard. first 3 (left to right) looking at protests, 2nd 3; Korean, Japanese and Russian war protest and propaganda posters, 3rd 3: 2 adbusters military/war covers - one advertising war as an “apocalypse”, the other talking about the main conflicts of war. I also included a book cover; “Marxism, Fascism & Totalitarianism” written by A. James Gregor. In this row I drew inspiration with words in relation to the images - something which we could get creative with when making the poster.

Wireframes for our website - homepage, explaining “The Season of Whenua”, a “Tickets” page where you can browse plays and their descriptions as well as purchasing tickets, and a page on Warren Maxwell and his music. Each page will have a detailed backdrop with 2 vivid drawings relating to two of our songs, “Home, Land and Seas” by Trinity Roots and “Peaceful Man” by Little Bushman. The background for the homepage will be our animation to Nature of Man.

Story board of our animation - Vietnam war scene to ‘Nature of Man’ - intense start with helicopters, Vietcong marching etc to establish the scene. Then to an American soldier sitting back-to-back with a Vietnamese soldier as they smoke durries - to show that they have similarities, they’re both human. Next a bomb is dropped which created a mushroom shaped could. This fades to a tree of a similar shape and zooms our on a man teaching his son to fish under the tree, post war, to the beginning of ‘Home, Land and Sea’ before the video ends with a title screen. If this is used as an add on Instagram where these videos loop then this will work as both an opening title screen and a closing title screen to the animation.

Week 2: Monday Moodboard - “The Season of Whenua” - Grace Waterson and Charlie Jones. Vietnam war scenes - footage with animated characters drawn to represent the Americans and Vietnamese whilst playing “Nature of Man”.  Ends with a man teaching his son to fish under a tree post-war. 3 Words, 1 Image: Each word shifts the emotional connection or mood of the viewer towards the image. Here, the first image says “Hope” and look as through it may be directed towards a light - eg “Ray of hope”, where as the image below it saying “Despair” indicates this light may be harmful, perhaps a bomb. This paints a scene of perhaps a horrifying time such as war. 3 words paired with 3 images “despair”, “hope”, “trapped” paints a picture of someone who is trapped in a hopeless situation however still holds hope to bring themselves out. Perhaps I should have swapped the order of “despair” and “trapped - “trapped”, “hope”, “despair”, which holds a more coherent storyline, perhaps one that ends in tragedy. I matched “trapped” with an upwards-facing image of the tower as the steel frame looked like a cage. I paired despair to an image which i had associated with a war scene and “hope” with a shot facing out of the window from inside. - They are currently in a house and still alive - a scene where it implies that there is still hope

Week 1, Monday:
Romeo and Juliet.
Partnered with Charlie Jones.
Words: Steampunk, War.
The third image in was created by Charlie and I to match the word ‘War’. We ran out of time drawing this, however it was a war scene where Romeo and Juliet we’re reaching out to each other in the trenches while their families, the Captulets and Montagues shot at each other on each side of the trench.
The 4th image, Charlie and I created a semi-realistic heart with a cog in it To match the word “Steampunk”. The poison which causes the death of Romeo and Juliet is being poured into one of the valves of the heart from an oil canister whilst the other blows out steam. The “steampunk” theme is also incorporated in the text below the title, which also references our other word, ‘war’.
