in Nigeria, every tertiary institution graduate compulsively undergoes a one year program known as the (service year) under the (National Youth Service Corps NYSC) with the objectives of serving the fatherland in whatever discipline and culture appreciation in any of the thirty six states of the country excluding the candidate’s state of origin.
candidates undergoing this exercise are fondly referred to as “corper” or formally as “corp member” and are entitled to some allowance from the federal and state government. in most cases corp members are treated with utmost care and favourably throughout the country as their are regarded as “government property”
candidates are deployed to any of the thirty six states (including local governments and districts) to serve their fatherland by working mostly in the educational sector or any hiring organizations, ministries or institutions.
today, the aim of this program is hardly effective as candidates “work” or “sort” (nigerian slang for bribe) their way into influencing their original states of deployment to bigger, “better” and more commercial cities with whatever influence they might have.
recently, deliberations have been ongoing, rumours flying that this program should be scrapped as it is of no use anymore and chunks out a huge part of the nation’s wealth.
personally, with just one month gone in my service year, i strongly believe the service year should remain. i have met exceptional and beautiful minded people in less than one month of my service year, knowing also that before the end of this program i’d have gained alot of awesome experiences and people.

in a world with so much going on we deserve to be happy not because we meet up world’s standards. just happy being us, normal, easy, weird, difficult, humans, people! i hear people call others “weird” and wonder; “ what does that even mean? when was there ever a segregation between normal and weird, aren’t we all people? ”
you see, humans are the cause of their own unhappiness: when we learn that humans are humans not black, white, green or pink, or froed, frizzled or blonde, not straight or gay, deformed or “beautiful”, or uneducated, first class or initiated, the day we learn that humans are just humans, people: just humans maybe we’d be fine afterall, say goodbye to the shitiness on earth and all.
or maybe, just maybe, we await to be compelled by a supernatural first.

Afikpo man wearing okpu ngwo raffia hat, Mgbom village, Afikpo Village-Group, Nigeria.
Tom Ibe, my field assistant wearing okpu ngwo (hat-raffia). Diviners (dibia) use it when carrying sacred objects for swearing an oath somewhere, but anyone can do so when it rains. Ancient hat form rarely seen nowadays. Note that it was used in Afikpo Yam Priest’s compound the day of first cooking of new yams.
Simon Ottenberg, 1960.

In the 70’s, there was a believe that you can pick money on the street of Lagos.
In 2016, Marina is the economic heartbeat of Lagos. Though I see no physical money on this street, I can feel the flow of currency between the high rise buildings.
Just a tap into the flow of curren-t-cy will secure avenue for wealth creation.
Stay within the flow…. ………..
