Focus Group
youtube
After editing our final music video and posting it on YouTube, we later conducted a focus group with our target audience in order to gain more knowledge on what they liked about our video. The questions we asked were as follows: 1.What is your favourite part of the music video and why? 2.what ways does our music video appeal to its target audience and why? 3.What do you think we could improve on and why? 4.Which aspects of the editing did you find particularly effective and why? 5.In what ways does our music video fit with the conventions of the genre?

Here is my finished poster. I am pleased with the result as I believe it relates well to our music video. Although our video is mostly bright and colourful,I decided to use the black and white effect to emphasise the importance of the guitar to our main character. Although he begins the video alone and ultimately finishes alone, the guitar is the one thing that he keeps with him at all times and is a way for our artist to forget about the real world and escape from reality. I found that a common convention of posters or digipaks, was to have a quote from a known artist, or in my case, an unknown one. In addition to that, another convention was to include the release date, which I have shown at the bottom. I decided to make the texts at the bottom of the poster in line with one another as I believe it makes my piece look tidy and professional. I have included a scan code on the bottom right hand side of my poster, due to the demands of current media technologies, this allows my audience to buy the album or gain more information about the artist in a quick and easy way.

The first photo is the original photo I took of the guitar for my poster. However, to work well with my digipak, I decided to change a few things about the photo. I changed the exposure of the photo and changed it to black and white (shown on the second photo) In order to make my poster proffesional, I conformed to the conventions that a professional poster would have: The name of the ablum, the name of the artist, the date the album is released, a quote and a record label. This was all done using PhotoShop. The last photo is the final edit of my poster.

First Rough Draft of Music Video
youtube
Here is our first draft of our music video. So far we are pretty happy with the majority of it, however there are a few parts of the video which we have decided to re-film. The parts we want to re-film are the initial shots in the city at beginning of the video as we believe it isn't as good the rest of the video and may decrease the quality of the video and the shot of our main character getting on the bus, we feel lets the video down as it is of a shaky quality. Therefore we will use a shoulder mount or a tripod when filming that particular part of the video. Sophie and I believe that the video represents our story line well and we are happy with the progress so far. Additionally, we have decided to play the song in the background whilst filming our character sing as we believe this will represent our lip syncing clips more realistic and easier to cut together if the words are said at precisely the right time.

After being inspired by Trey Songz digipak, this is what I have produced so far. I believe this front cover for my digipak fits well with the theme of our music video and the life of our character. The photo 'inside' of his face, as shown on this picture, represents the world he wants to be in, as if it is in his memories/thoughts. This is also represented by the fading of the title, again indicating that photo as his face is what he really wants/where he wants to be. The main figure facing to the right represents our main character in the music video looking into his imagination.

Digipak Ideas

After researching more into the Digipak ideas, this one really stood out to me and I liked the idea of having two different pictures layering over each other. This would represent our music video and context well as our character is living to lives so the overlaying of the two pictures would indicate to the audience that there's more sides to the story than they believe.

Here is the first draft of my front cover for the album of 'Second Glance', I am pleased with the outcome however I believe the font needs editing so I will be experimenting with different fonts soon. I wanted the imaged to seem as if the audience were looking into a microscope, so I used the fish eye effect of 'spherize' on Photoshop in order to create this.

Sia - Elastic Heart
After watching this video, it is clear to understanding why it has caused so much controversy. The video itself could been seen as very provocative and due to it having no clear story line; this leaves the audience to interpret the story themselves.
I think the concept of the video is powerful and it is represented in such a way that makes the audience feel uncomfortable with what they are seeing as, like mentioned previously, it isn't clear what is happening. It could be: A father:Daughter relationship, or an older man having a relationship with a young girl, both of which are sensitive topics if they are perceived as being abusive. In addition to that the use of a very young and immature looking girl could also cause some controversy as the innocence of her allows the audience to feel pathos and therefore they may feel on edge with watching a younger girl dancing in little clothing in front of and on an older man. However this may have been Sia's intentions, although she has apologized, because even if people are talking about her video in a negative way, people are still talking about her video and the viewing figures would be increasing due to the controversy. Sometimes, to bigger artist, any publicity is good publicity.
The feeling of not knowing what has happened in Sia's video, having different scenarios of what it could be or being confused relates well to our video as we had this idea of making the audience think throughout the video in order to understand what is going on. Therefore this video will inspire us to caring on with our original idea and has given us a few ideas to make our video unique to others.

In order to gain access to using the song we have decided to use, we had to send a request to the record company asking for their permission to use to song for our music video. Here is my email to them.
