In case you aren’t familiar, Michael Scott Moore and David Rohde are both journalists. Moore was held by Somali pirates for 977 days. Rohde was held captive by the Taliban for 7 months after being abducted in Afghanistan.

What do I get for my first gun (constrained by CA gun laws)
Depends on what it is you want to do with it, exactly. But the Glock 19 (and derivatives) is pretty much the every pistol.
There's a question of practicality. Whether you want a rifle or a handgun. I'd say a handgun is a much more practical option given how you can carry it with you, and they're cheap to shoot. But handguns are also pretty difficult to get a hang of.
If you're solely interested in something to learn on, then I'd get a TX22. It won't be suitable for self defense but it will be a fantastic way to develop skills and just have something to shoot for dirt cheap. .22lr is the cheapest ammunition you can buy, it's like 5-6 cents a round. I should note that you can definitely develop good skills through dry fire practice, which you should do a lot of. You don't need to start on a .22. But .22 is really fun and approachable and cheap.
If you want something with more practical application, you want something in 9mm. Properly-sized 9mm handguns are relatively tame. And 9mm is the second-cheapest ammunition you can buy. And it's also the combat handgun cartridge. You may as well get something small enough to conceal, but for a first gun you'll want something that isn't so small that it will affect your ability to shoot it. In terms of sheer practicality, you'll probably want something with a striker for a little additional safety over a single-action hammer fired gun, and easier to pick up than a double-action. That isn't to say you can't start with something else, but both single-action and DA/SA handguns have their own quirks you need to train on specifically which aren't a consideration for a striker-fired handgun. And, really, you should probably get something that has a lot of market support for cheap magazines and holsters and shit.
Glock 19.
The glock 19 isn't the be-all, end-all. The ergos on glocks are fucking stupid. A less extreme grip angle than what the Glock offers will point more naturally and allow you to crosstrain with other guns a lot more easily. Their factory optic mounting pattern sucks. But they have the best logistics hands down, and Ruger just came out with a G19 clone, the RXM, which is promising but untested.
CZ is not that great these days, at the very least not their striker fired guns. Taurus has a bad track record. HK is overpriced. SIG is overpriced and explodes (the P320 is a scam). Canik is pretty good but has some lingering questions about safety. Walther is good but has a limited aftermarket and doesn't really do anything unique. S&W's M&P series is a pretty good alternative to the Glock honestly, but the magazines cost more and there are fewer good options.
There are newer designs in the micro-9 family that are similar dimensions yet more svelte, like the G48, the Hellcat Pro, the P365XL. Those are very well liked. I don't have experience with them to speak of because I have big ass hands and I'm not really the target for those. The P365 (not XL) I shot was fairly stiff and I think would be difficult for a new shooter to manage.
Go to a range and rent some shit lol.
