i voted vasectomies for all but ... i've turned over a new leaf.

art donaldson wants a family. he's always wanted a family. raised as an only child by his grandmother during the formative years of his life, one thing is constant: craving. he craves affection, he craves an outlet to pour affection into. being a father is one of the most beautiful, important things he feels he's ever done. so no vasectomy for him, and you know patrick would not go through with the procedure if art's not on board. he's whiny like that.

anyways, i also think tashi would refuse to be pregnant again at first. she is not the type to enjoy pregnancy. but goddamn it, she loves the shit out of lily, and art's starting to wear her down. maybe one more, or a pair of twins. they struggle with fertility at first, mostly due to age and extremely tight schedules. but when tashi duncan is spotted at the farmer's market, wearing a shapeless frock but unable to disguise her bump, the speculation - is it donaldson's kid? is it zweig's? - takes off right away.

patrick never pictured himself as the father figure type. secretly, he worries he's got bad genes. wouldn't want to pass on all that anger and hurt and insecurity to a kid, would you?

but the first time he holds the twins - wide, dark eyes and smooth curls and tiny noses and soft hands - he's a goner. all her can think about is how the twins look so much like their momma and papa all at once. and he wonders, would mine look like me? would they look like her? would they look like him, somehow?

and so they end up with a few more kids than they expected, in the end. but art's job as a commentator allows him to spend most of the time at home with the kids, and everyone's raised as theirs, even lily (she was calling patrick "pop" before he could broach the subject himself).

can i just say i feel like art can make really niche foods very well

Actually I think this is very sweet. Like aww imagine if Art got really into cooking after retirement. Patrick gets him a junk food cookbook to poke fun at him, kind of like, look, you can finally eat all this gross, amazing stuff now. And Art is annoyed, at first, but one day he has a lot of spare time, so he picks, like one recipe out of the book, because he's hungry and doesn't feel like just plain chicken and broccoli and rice. Not anymore.

So he opens to one of the pages, picks one thing, and makes a grocery list. He comes home, and he figures out he's actually really good at cooking. He's methodical, precise. Sometimes he has to watch a youtube video a few times to get the technique down, but he enjoys it.

After about an hour, he's sitting there with a big, heaping bowl of fettuccini alfredo, with some pan seared veggies so he doesn't feel too bad about himself while he eats it. And god, it's good. It's really good. The next day he picks another recipe to try. The next he chooses a desert and lets Lily help.

Soon he's got a collection of cookbooks on the counter and he's tried almost every single recipe.

And if he makes it his post-tennis hobby? If he does his commentary and covers matches but also makes his own cookbook on the side? Sigh.

out of the two of them, Art is the most curious and nosy, like a small puppy. being an only child for his whole life, he can't help but want to know more about his new roommate than he was actually telling him himself. so, when Patrick has a late practice one evening, he decides to snoop. he tries the usual places, dresser drawers, in the back of his closet, but the place he does end up finding something, is his bathroom cabinet. a small pouch, inside containing vials and syringes, similar to his own. also marked, testosterone.

the blond waits quietly on his bed, pretending to study while he nervous anticipates Patrick's arrival. he has to ask. so when the brunette finally comes heaving through the door, the conversation is barely there before Art is blurting out, "are you trans?" Patrick stills in the middle of setting his tennis bag away, back to the other boy. he says nothing. Art continues on his ramble. "i-i just saw your bag in the bathroom and it looked like mine so it isn't a bad thing or me being an ass i just—"

"like yours?" Patrick repeats softly, turning to him, eyes vulnerable. Art nods. "like mine.." that evening, they discuss it, their other shared commonality. they talk transitions, coming outs, surgeries, goals—even sexualities. all is back to the peace they one had, even ranging into deep comfort now that they had found a safe haven with one another.

but as boys often do, their minds start to turn elsewhere after a few months and they can't help but be curious of other things. it drives them to a drunken night of kissing sloppily in some frat house bathroom, Patrick groping at Art's ass while Art moans against his mouth. they go on like that for some time, leaving the house with flushed cheeks and mused hair, the walk back quiet and stumbly. they flop into their beds, ready to pass out when Art breaches the silence. "Pat..?" "hmm?" "what...what are we..?"

Patrick is quiet for a few moments, nearly leaving Art to think he's fallen back to sleep until he speaks. "i..what wold you like to be..?" Art swallows, rolling on his side in the dark to face him. "i..i'd like to be boyfriends, i think. if you'd want that too." he hears the bed creak and sees Patrick's figure roll over to face him. "i want that..a lot." Art can't help the small smile that rolls across his face in the darkness, barely registering as Patrick's larger body crawls into bed with him, pulling the smaller boy into his arms. he kisses his head. "my boyfriend.."
