One final point. The history of response to the human rights and democracy movements in China has, I think, a special inflection. For a long time almost all influential foreign scholarship and thinking about China started from the assumption that China was an essentially collectivist society with no indigenous tradition of individual rights. Hence, Sinologists argued, we shouldn’t expect a real movement for democracy and for individual rights as these are understood in the West to emerge in China. This double-standard thinking about China reflects the general decline of universalist moral and political standards—of Enlightenment values—in the past generation. There is an increasing reluctance to apply a single standard of political justice, of freedom, and of individual rights and of democracy. The usual justifications for this reluctance are that it is “colonialist” (the label used by people on the left) or “Euro-centric” (the label used both by multiculturalist academics and by businessmen, who talk admiringly of authoritarian “Confucian cultures”) to expect or to want non-European peoples to have “our” values. My own view is that it is precisely the reluctance to apply these standards—as if “we” in the European and the neo-European countries need them, but the Chinese and the peoples of Africa don’t—that is colonialist and condescending

LAPD detonated 5000 lbs of fireworks in the middle of a residential area, injuring at least 17 people and causing $900 million in various damages in a low-income, majority-POC neighborhood.
They then continue to pursue caging the person whose fireworks they stole while news media misreports to cover for police incompetency and destruction.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Social media rumors may have fueled a deadly shooting outside a Memphis shopping center.
Nazario Garcia was gunned down Sunday in his white work van.
That’s the same type of vehicle at the center of viral Facebook posts – claiming men are using the vans for sex trafficking.
“I heard pow, some shooting, pow pow. I didn’t know what was going on. I just layed down in my car,” said Jerry Coleman, witness.
Jerry Coleman was in the parking lot of a Raleigh shopping center, outside the Goodwill store, when the shooting happened Sunday morning.
According to a police affidavit, 60-year-old Nazario Garcia was parked in the lot when Favian and Miguel Effinger showed up. The report says they confronted Garcia “without provocation” and opened fire on Garcia.
He tried to get away but lost control of his white van and crashed into a shopping cart, ending up on the curb.
Before the shooting, police say the brothers’ mother, Gjuandell Effinger, sent a video on social media – claiming the occupant of a white van with the same tag number as Garcia had tried to abduct her from the parking lot of a nearby Walmart.
Investigators say there’s “no evidence to support an attempted abduction.”
Gjuandell Effinger’s Facebook page shows post after post she shared from other users warning about white vans being used for sex trafficking – warning not to even go to your car if you see a van like that.
There are also several shares about abducted children and women. She also shared a warning about white vans that Facebook flagged as false.
The white van warning has been shared all across the country.
In Detroit, a handyman was harassed by people because he drove a white van.
He said it started with this video of a woman who claimed she saw a young girl being forced into the back of a van. It also went viral on Facebook.
The Effinger trio appeared in court Wednesday. Miguel and Favian are charged with first degree murder. Their mother is charged with solicitation first degree murder.
Nazario Garcia died at the Regional Medical Center.
The trio is expected back in court on Tuesday.

LibsOfTikTok kept on getting banned for inciting violence against drag shows and children hospitals so Musk unbanned her and now there’s a banner basically saying “don’t ban her without talking to me first.”
You can read all about this and more here.

I spent some time in LibsofTiktok, one manifestation of the Christian nationalist hate movement, challenging the b.s. there.  This twitter page seems to have three main functions:
1. Revive the old slur that LGBT people are pedos recruiting children.  If you want to know where the “groomer” slur originates online and why right-wingers suddenly think that drag queen story hours are a threat to society, this is surely one significant source.
2. Provoke offline harassment, death threats, threats to employment and physical attacks on LGBT people.
3. Rally and sustain a community of those motivated to attack LGBT rights, public libraries and schools, LGBT identified teachers, and the appearance of trans people in public.

i still think its so funny that someone walked up to a world leader in the street with a gun made of duct tape and PVC pipes and batteries and killed him in front of a crowd of people and in the following months everyone in the country was like "wait yeah he had a point"

“We wanted to help people understand that abolition isn’t this sort of utopian ideal that is something that can never happen, it’s something that we do,” she said. “It’s actually a collection of practices. It’s not something that happens all at once, it’s something that we gather over time.”
