Hey, curious question!
You help run the alterhuman archive, right?
What do you think its size would be if it were to be made physical?
Imagine an alterhuman information based library!
I am always concerned about things being lost to time online.
It currently has 1637 texts, most of which could fit on a few print pages, at most. So I honestly don't think our community's writings would take up more space on your shelf than, like, A Song of Ice and Fire. Kinda crazy to think about, huh?
Someone should compile it and print it and bind it.
Not me, but someone.
#creating a physical copy of the archives would be so neat......#that + the otherkin timeline? would be so neat to physically have

It's 2025. Let's start understanding the otherkin community (and the larger alterhuman community) a little bit better. Looks at resources. Look at what different terms mean. Ask questions. Equip yourself with the knowledge necessary for being a better ally.
#and ask if you dont know where to look#a lot of us either have our own little libraries or know someone who does!!

Sometimes I want to split up my fishness into all its separate part- sturgeon, eels, octopi, gar, gators, other reptiles......... but it would be difficult. I am an accumulation of so many different creatures that I connect with deeply to the point where I could argue that they're each a 'type. But that'd be ignoring the ways in which they are inexplicably tied together. You can not isolate the eel from the sturgeon, and you can't pull them away from me being a gillman. It's so many different things piled onto each other.

It’s a little disheartening to realise that the ‘gar therian’ tags only contain my introductory post, amazing art from 2024, and the gorgeous gar photos holopics/snowleopardmountainlion has shared. I’m a disappointed in myself for not sharing my experiences as a therian gar more. This post aims to rectify that — it is a ramble on what it personally means to be a gar.
Unlike my raptorhood, being a fish has psychological origins for me. On the surface level, it is admittedly quite out of the blue (/pun). I don’t have an innate connection to fish*, nor do I have an exceptional love for water, which is ironic, considering how aquatic my identity is. However, I am drawn to such environments, as though, given different circumstances, the water is where I belong. I am a creature enamoured by the history of life on our earth, and so see water as my metaphorical blood; my origins are tied to the medium, and it is within me.
*The paraphyletic group. I’ve been into birds for as long as I can remember, and all tetrapods are technically a kind of fish.
In a way, being a gar is much like this. We are known as “living fossil” fish, as our form has barely changed since the Jurassic. Our bodies were shaped in a world near-unfamiliar to present day, and I see myself in this as an archosaur.
Our shape has remained unchanged for hundreds of millions of years because it has allowed us to survive. We have endured the environment for millennia. My garhood is tied to a sense of security — of ganoid scales and toxic eggs; perhaps even a desire to be protected, and for one’s own to be safe.
An aspect of my garhood is based around movement. I find familiarity in our preferred style of hunting: being an ambush predator. One who can strike, but one who waits to do so, slow-moving and sedentary most of the time. I see this behaviour reflected in my own; I am often passive, but armed with needle-like teeth. I can bite.
This isn’t all that defines my garhood. Garhood is a mess of feelings merged with experiences, which makes it hard to explain and justify without bordering on poetry. Unlike being a raptor, in which my physical characteristics help affirm my identity, I cannot rely on descriptions of my species.
To me, being a gar isn’t based on how closely I resemble type specimens (which is why I am no one species) — being a gar stems from my instincts more than anything, both in the instincts I have and the gut-feeling that I am simply one of us.

trying to write about the lack of merish spaces in the nonhuman community without coming off as dismissive of current merish spaces. I want to point out how our history only starts in the 2010's but I'm having trouble wording it + it's impact on how i see the nonhuman community without coming across as "woe is me! i am all alone! (<-is clearly not alone) "

is plurality alterhuman ?
notice there is now some discussion of whether or not plurality is or should be inherently alterhuman , with argument that this dehumanise . but think there is some really important context that need to consider , especially if make these arguments as singlet ( literally stop that ) or strictly dissociative plural .
alterhumanity do not mean experience is literally and inherently nonhuman - this is misconception that lead to exclusion of certain experiences and discussions , for one thing . but beyond that , alterhumanity is also about relationship to societal standards of typical ( earthly , mundane ) humanity .
think about how many people and cultures over time have stories about things like demonic possession , spirit channelers , even mimics and body double replacements . whether or not regard these stories to be true , and some of these might even be positive , these people still break norm . one human body should have one inhabitant - to have more is either to be exceptional , or meet with terrible circumstance . in any case , out of ordinary , noteworthy .
and truthfully , these stories and standards did not end centuries ago . how often do these things come up in media , where characters live plural lives through these circumstances , yet never really call plurality ? how often do these things need some sort of fix , trick , exorcism , banishment ?
this is egregious enough that even when real life people explicitly have diagnosis of DID or OSDD and fit near perfectly into psychiatric framework , some people consider that to be literal demonic or spirit possession in modern times , speak as if uncontrollable monster , believe correct kind of faith will " fix " . even in recent history , some psychiatrists treat plural patients in ways not very far off from exorcists .
hard to argue that singlet identity is not current societal standard of humanity , and that many people - both historically and currently - consider deviation to be inherently inhuman . people just do not always say in those exact words .
beyond that , some plural experiences actually do follow explanations of spirituality , religion , and non-earthly worlds . this is main perspective that terms like gateway come from : there is earthly world here , other non-earthly worlds out there , and this body act as vehicle for inhabitants of such worlds to explore earth . even human inhabitants may have perspectives and experiences that do not line up with societal standards of humanity here , in at least some part because plurality inherently break those standards .
would love to see world in future where there is no standard of which humans really human after all , but in meantime , standards do still exist . so , alterhuman is open to all who feel experiences do not line up with societal standards of what typical human can or can not be - and by design , this can include plurals , especially of gateway and spiritual experiences .
to round off , would suggest to read this post by x-rds ( coiners of alterhuman ) about this very same discussion . everyone have right to choose whether consider personal plurality as alterhuman , however , important to understand why some might want to in first place .

Ceffyl Dŵr
Ceffyl Dŵr or Water Horse of Welsh legend comes from folk tales about a shapeshifter that takes the form of a horse and lures wayward travellers on its back before taking off and leaping into the nearest body of water and drown the unlucky traveller.

There's not much in the world that gets a majority of us to feel super creaturey or animalistic that compares to just.... Cracking open a hard boiled egg. Which might seem so simple and so benign, but I think it taps into a lot of our foraging and hunting instincts at the same time.
It's so good. You grab something, crack it open and eat the stuff inside, which can all be pretty easily done with just your hands. Like cracking into a walnut or crunching a bone. It's just one of the best nonhuman euphoria foods possible to eat because it feels like a more involved process than just eating a steak. And we like meat and even fruits and vegetables more than we like eggs, we don't really enjoy egg for the taste--it's the experience that gets us.
We're not even sure what 'type of ours this would relate to, but it's a pretty universally animalistic experience across the board. Maybe our collective dragon 'type ate eggs from others' nests? Maybe it's some sort of bird thing? Hard to tell. But it's definitely a thing. Would recommend.

So I mentioned earlier how I was trying to figure out my horn situation, and was considering that maybe it's just the dragon form that has horns, and that I was mixing them up with antennae.
For further context, I've been depicting my aquatic form with antennae, and I don't have a solid image of my dragon form yet. I've also been suspicious that my aquatic and humanoid form might be either the same species in a tadpole -> frog type of situation, or my humanoid form is an evolutionary descendant of the aquatic form. I'm leaning towards the first one currently.
Having this perspective on it is giving me ideas for figuring out the less clear parts of my form.
I've altered a few of my existing drawings to show the estimated shape of the antennae.
It feels weird to draw myself in a new way, especially for such a prominent feature, but so far I'm vibing with it.
I'm working out the details, but so far I think that the stalk is lightly armored to protect the sensitive connection between the sensory bulb and the brain. At least, I'm pretty sure it's sensory? It might be more ornamental, or for the purpose of bioluminescense. Ths bulbs have a strong bioluminescense, and the antennae can move. I keep feeling that my form should have some red accents on it, but I'm still trying to figure out where. I do feel that there is some red on the bulbs.
Though it's a little strange, the antennae do feel kinda "right" visually. I just need to do some internal investigation to be sure that they're on my humanoid form, not just my aquatic form.

A little follow up to yesterday’s post — I tried drawing myself in a way that reflected my memories more accurately. There are many details I still need to iron out, but I think this depiction isn’t too far off.
Side-note: I do apologise for posting so much art recently!
