Are you looking for the right dog?
It's likely that you already know the difference between a "designer" dog and a "mutt." Both are mixed-breeds. However, the designer dog, sometimes called a hybrid, is a deliberate combination of traits from two purebred breeds. What is the heritage of mutts? Who knows?
Designer dogs are carefully selected from parents who have been thoroughly researched and chosen to complement each other. A Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever or a Poodle. If you purchase a Goldendoodle puppy from an accredited breeder, you are getting the result of a carefully considered mix where both parents have been healthy, purebred and without any known problems.

The goldendoodle is a popular hybrid dog. Golden Retrievers and Poodles are very popular breeds. They use their intelligence to help people. These traits are common to the Goldendoodle puppy.
Cockapoos, a hybrid of Cocker Spaniels and Poodles, are a type of goldendoodle. However, they are generally larger than Cockapoos. Female Goldendoodles weigh between 40 and 60 pounds, while males can reach 60 to 70 pounds. These are the combined weights of a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. Miniature Poodle crosses with Golden Retrievers are usually smaller.
Breeders of these dogs have one goal: to breed hypoallergenic dogs. This is one of the benefits of the Poodle's contributions to the mix. Poodles shed less than other breeds. Combining the genetics of a Golden Retriever, a prolific shedder, the goal is for the puppies to have all the positive traits of an active, friendly, intelligent dog. The coat will be more similar to the Poodle's and the Poodle will shed less.
Goldendoodle breeders may claim that Goldendoodles can be hypoallergenic. However, it all depends on the dog. Goldendoodles are gentle and easy to train and have been used for assistance dogs and guide dogs for over 20 years.
The first generation Goldendoodles, which are bred from a Golden Retriever with a Poodle and a Golden Retriever, tend to be more uniform. These puppies may look a lot like Golden Retrievers, while others will be more similar to Poodles. Temperaments can be influenced by the Golden Retriever parent or the Poodle. You can choose from a variety of coats, including black, brown, caramel, chocolate and phantom-colored. A competent breeder who is familiar with Goldendoodles will be able to predict how each puppy will develop.
Breeders of designer dogs are trying to avoid the same problems as the separate breeds when breeding them. This is called "hybrid viability". This is known as "hybrid vigor" and can make the first generation appear to have fewer problems than purebred dogs. The first generation of Goldendoodles might be healthy, but they could also be unhealthy.
When both parents have the same genetic problems, it can be a problem. Hip dysplasia, for example, is a well-known problem in the Golden Retriever breed. If the parent of the Poodle has the same problem, the differences in breeds will not have any effect. The puppies will likely inherit similar hip dysplasia problems.
For this reason, it is vitally important that your breeder is testing/investigating the health and lineage of the both parents. Don't buy a Goldendoodle, or any other breed of dog, without talking to the breeder about the health and bloodline issues. Poodles have a tendency to progressive retinal atrophy. This can also be an issue for Goldendoodles.
Breeders who breed from the next generation of Goldendoodles, rather than from a Golden Retriever or a Poodle, begin to see the benefits. The puppies will be more like a Golden Retriever or a Poodle.
Many designer dogs, including goldendoodles, are very much in demand right now. Before you decide to bring one home, make sure you do your research about potential health issues. Particularly if the problem is common to both breeds. Also, familiarize yourself about the contributing breeds. If you don’t like Golden Retrievers or Poodles as separate breeds then it’s likely that you won’t like the Goldendoodle.
