This forces animals to relocate, increasing competition for limited space and resources.
For example, deforestation has severely impacted the population of jaguars in the Amazon. Jaguars are apex predators and require large territories to hunt. With the loss of forest cover, their territories shrink, leading to lower prey availability and higher competition with other predators. As a result, the carrying capacity of the ecosystem for jaguars declines, pushing them closer to endangerment.
Water Availability as a Limiting Factor
Deforestation also affects the rainforest's water cycle. Trees play a crucial role in transpiration, a process where they release water vapor into the atmosphere, contributing to rainfall.
