500 Word Reflection
This project has been on a discovery and experimentation journey. Originally inspired by the Angler Fish; I am pleased with how I have developed my initial ideas. From the beginning my idea has been to create an atmosphere in a space to mimic the deep sea and textures, beings and curiosities one might discover below the surface. In keeping with this theme of the deep sea I decided to create an immersive space with an eerie atmosphere, to achieve this I decided to my audio should be that of a church organ. I attribute these huge instruments to a truly eerie echo that takes over a space, a body and a mind so found them quite appropriate for creating a level of religiosity about my piece, a sense of mindfulness. I believe the audio of this project is successful in accomplishing my intended immersive atmosphere within the installation space.
Furthermore, I decided, after some experimentation, that I would like to change my initial idea of an Angler Fish inspired hanging sculpture and instead use two projectors to cast blue shades and images across each other to suggest a conversation between the two films. These films consist of lots of abstracted footage, some becoming unrecognisable and some maintaining a certain level of reality. Parts of the films were also recorded using a 180° camera and a waterproof case to gather footage of the sea floor and images below the waves. I found the use of these styles and filming techniques worked very well together as they allow the audience to focus on their own thoughts without the distraction of focussing on clear images.
Additionally, I found successful results in my curation. The installation took me two days to put up, in which I problem solved and dealt with technical difficulties such as film formatting and audio syncing. To combat these issues I adapted my films, audio and footage to achieve the aesthetic results I intended. I also decided to embrace the presence of wires and cables on the floor and use tape to create waves that imitate that of the sea floor and seashore. To do this I used foil tape, after considering and deciding against blue electrical tape, as it created a more intriguing space and reflected the images of the projections along the wires and added to the successes of the piece.
On reflection, there are several areas I believe I could have pushed this installation further. It would have been beneficial to make the films longer and include more experimental footage that investigates more methods of filmmaking. I also believe I could have made the films the same length and allowed them to be in sync so I could control further which pieces of footage interact with each other. Saying this I do find success in allowing the films to interact differently each time the viewer watches them as I enjoy the way no 20 minutes+ of the installation is the same, sometimes footage syncs up sometimes it doesn’t, I believe it works either way. Overall, I am pleased with how my ideas progressed into this deep blue space that, in my opinion, allows the audience to be still and mindful as they experience being below the surface.

Struggles and Limitations
Family had corona over Christmas so filming limited to the one day we could get out of the house while I was home (filming from Kimmeridge/180 degree underwater footage had to be done in one day)
Weather limited filming, was a very grey day at Kimmeridge and had to beat the rain so time was not on my side for that
Technical difficulties setting up projectors (film wasn't compatible with media players, cable confusion etc)
Couldn't find a church or organ player that would let me record original audio
Sound of air con in installation and installation documentation, a slight annoying hum

Curating the Installation - Day 2
Today I really saw my work come together and am a lot happier now I can see the final product
First I hung up some material on the wall for projection 2 and, in a similar manner to the fabric of projection 1, allowed the fabric to fold and create waves against the wall.
Tumblr media
Next began attaching various textured materials to the ceiling creating layers of fabric to cast slight shadows onto the projection but also to mimic the shape and nature of seaweed. Materials I used: green and blue mottled wool (Pulled apart to fray and create texture), hessian (pulled apart to combat neat edges), some blue net mottled material (hung on the ceiling to twist and hang at uneven lengths and some blue mesh material (also hung at different lengths)

Finally I used some foil tape to tape down the exposed wires in wave patterns across the floor to echo the sea floor and sea shore. I did consider using blue electrical tape to go along with the blue theme but found that the foil tape had a much more interesting result as it became reflective of the blue and looked perfect for the aesthetic I was going for.

Final result:

After finishing I began recording and documenting the space to create a film for assessment. I kept this very simple and used a microphone to record the audio in the room and camera for the projection recording. I also kept the editing very simple and only made one cut in the middle where is shifted the camera angle to allow the viewer to see the projectors interacting with the space, to make this transition as smooth as I wanted I added a cross dissolve for the audio and footage.

Curating the Installation
Day One of the set up was very productive.
I first started by putting the two films onto media players and attaching them to the 2 projectors on Plinths.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next I started lining up the projectors so they are casting across each-other onto the opposite walls and are the same size projection. I also lined them up to meet in the corner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this I started playing the sound through the speakers and making sure the volume is even to each speaker (2 speakers).
Tumblr media
After speaking to the technician we decided the wall looked a little messy and chipped which ruined the illusion a little so we began experimenting and considering putting fabric on the walls to project onto as I previously considered. We found this worked well as I pinned the semi-shiny fabric to the wall in a sort of pleated manner to allow the fabric to form waves against the wall. Additionally I decided to add use the UV lights to cast a slight light onto the floor to mimic the reflection of the projectors and allow the audience to experience a blue totally blue room adding to the atmosphere I intended.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next steps for Day 2:
Add more fabric to uncovered wall (projection 2)
layer fabrics of different styles and textures to experiment further how the projection changes
tape the wires down in waves to add an extra layer of experimentation to the floor
tape over the white lights on the speakers and any other lights distracting the blue space

Kimmeridge Underwater Shooting
Kimmeridge Bay, Wareham, Dorset
I borrowed the 360 degree camera from uni as it has a waterproof case and used the 180 degree mode to record some underwater footage in the sea and in rock pools to let the audience feel as though they are immersed by water as they sit and experience the piece.
Below are some photos my brother and I took there to help with my documentation of the trip, a video containing mainly uncut and unedited footage I took on the 360 camera (the only editing being I sped it up and cut clips containing strangers faces etc) and a map of where we went and where we walked to find footage...

Film 1 Edit
youtube
This is my film for projection 1.
For this projection I decided to abstract the footage more so than in Projection 2. I decided I wanted both films to have a slight difference to each-other. To achieve this I also decided to make the films different lengths so that when I loop and projection the audience can watch for a long time before the two films line up at all. I also though it wasn't necessary to line up the footage as I felt it fairly distracting. My intention for my installation is to create an atmosphere of calm beneath the sea and decided to use levels to change and distort the RGB colours of my films to a deep blue and further add a level of blur so the audience can relax without the distraction of focussing. In addition, for both projection films, I used a combination of wave footage and underwater footage I took amongst other water based footage I collected over the moths (including some UV lighting footage of water mixed with UV paint to create a glow)

Film 2 edit with audio
youtube
This video shows my edit for the second projection and includes the audio. For the audio I decided to use organ music titled "Erbarm' dich mein" by J. S. Bach. I chose this song as it best went along with the atmosphere I wanted to create. I decided for this projection I would distort it less and allow the audience some clearer footage of the sea to distinguish the two projections as different and encourage the audience to look towards to corner of the room to capture both films in their peripheral vision and become more immersed. Similar to projection one I used levels to change the RGB levels to distort the film slightly and be in keeping with the same blue I intended to use all along. In addition, for both projection films, I used a combination of wave footage and underwater footage I took amongst other water based footage I collected over the moths (including some UV lighting footage of water mixed with UV paint to create a glow)

A Home in the Water - Vanessa Daws
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week I went to an exhibition at Fabrica Gallery, Brighton, by Vanessa Daws. The whole exhibition really got me thinking about my own water based project. I saw so many similarities between this piece and my new installation idea of 2 projections onto fabric. I loved listening to and relaxing to the slow sounds of the pump organ audio and learning about long distance Brighton swimmer Mercedes Gleitz, the first English woman to swim the English Channel in 1927. It was amazing to see how Daws drew on Gleitz as her inspiration in this piece and paid homage to her in such a mesmerising way by using 2 things she loves, long distance swimming and visual art. This piece made me want to jump in the sea and fall in love with swimming all over again.
The similarities between her ideas and my own is clear. The 2 screen projection and the water theme works well here so gives me hope that my slightly different projection idea will have a similar effect. I cant wait to see where this inspiration and line of investigation leads me.

Personal Tutorial feedback
After expressing to my tutor how I no longer intend to do the white box idea, we started considering alternatives and discussed my idea of several long, wide hanging drapes (possibly semi sheer material). Drawing on ideas from William Kentridges exhibiton we drew up a few of his projections and got thinking about how many projectors I should use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These doodle outline some of the installations we saw at the exhibition and the second image shows an idea for my installation, a simple, 2 projection installation onto 2 large sheets to add fluidity and movement to the sea based piece. I think this will work well as it will be simple yet effective. I will place chairs or beanbags close to the screens so the viewer can have it surround their peripheral vision to become more immersive in line with how I initially intended. We also discussed whether to use the projectors that project straight up from the floor or ones that project across a space, usually over heads and onto the opposite wall. I decided I want to use Projectors that pass through each other onto 2 adjacent walls.
