huge recall of contaminated cucumbers in the US and canada due to salmonella

this recall is going to get a little messy, because these cucumbers were sold both as sunfed brand and as generic, and many wound up in food service. despite the provided list of states and provinces, there is not a comprehensive list of all of where these cucumbers wound up. so it really sounds like a fuckload of cucumbers just got recalled.

Rio Rico, AZ (Nov. 27, 2024) - SunFed Produce, LLC (SunFed) is recalling all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled with the “SunFed” label or in a generic white box or black plastic crate with a sticker that provides the implicated grower’s name, “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.,” (photos below). The recalled cucumbers were sold between October 12, 2024, thru November 26, 2024, and are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Symptoms of salmonellosis usually start 6 hours to 6 days after infection and last 4 to 7 days.

The whole fresh American cucumbers were sold by SunFed and other importers and shipped to customers located in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington & Wisconsin and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, & Ontario. The cucumbers would have reached consumers through foodservice and retail outlets that may be located in states other than those listed above.

emphasis mine. these cucumbers are both branded and generic, sold to both retail and food service, in both the united states and canada, and potentially beyond the scope of the listed states and provinces. do not rely on the list of states and provinces to determine whether or not you are impacted by this recall or could have eaten contaminated cucumbers. I really wish there was some sort of unit given here for reference of how many cucumbers this is, because it really sounds like a lot.

SunFed initiated this recall after the US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) notified SunFed that the cucumbers described above were associated with reported salmonellosis illnesses between October 12 – November 15, 2024. SunFed is also contacting each of its direct buyers to advise them of the recall. No other products sold by or farms supplying to SunFed are implicated in this recall.

an undisclosed number of people got sick from salmonella, the FDA investigated those illnesses and linked them together, and the illnesses were traced back to these cucumbers. the recall announcement does not list the number of illnesses, hospitalizations, or potential deaths that may have been attributed to salmonella contamination in these cucumbers.

the recall announcement is urging people not to eat, sell, distribute, serve, or use these cucumbers in any capacity (with no exception explicitly made if cooked thoroughly), and to sanitize anything the contaminated cucumbers may have come in contact with. the recall announcement also recommends that consumers call the place of purchase to confirm whether or not they purchased the affected cucumbers, which...um, might be possible in canada, but a lot of places in the united states are closed today. whoops!

it can take up to a week for someone to become sick after salmonella exposure, and it can take up to a week for symptoms to subside. the recall announcement recommends contacting a healthcare provider if you think you may have become ill in association with this salmonella outbreak. there are medical tests that can be done to see if your illness is the same type as the salmonella in these cucumbers. as the announcement mentions, infections from salmonella can sometimes cause long-term illness and disability, so you really want to have as many records of your infection being linked to this outbreak as possible just in case there are long-term complications.
