We chart the routes of, and reasons for, the barriers which are once again dividing populations
Seth Dixon's insight:
This is an in-depth, multi-media interactive that explores the political, economic and cultural implications of borders that are heavily fortified or militarized (I found this too late to be included in the "best posts of 2013" list, but this will be the first to include for 2014).  Not all of these borders are political; in Brazil it explores the walls that separate different socioeconomic groups and in Northern Ireland they look at walls dividing religious groups.  The interactive examines various borders including U.S./Mexico, Morocco, Syria, India/Bangladesh, Brazil, Israel, Greece/Turkey, Northern Ireland, North/South Korea and Spain.  The overarching questions are these: why are we building new walls to divide us?  What are the impacts of these barriers?

Collective Impact (by GCFonline)
2012 marks the year in which The Greater Cincinnati Foundation moves to an even more intentional focus on achieving greater impact to solve our community's most complex issues. We do this by focusing on "collective impact." Collective impact includes long-term commitments to a common agenda for solving a specific social problem. This approach goes beyond collaboration. It requires a systemic approach that focuses on the relationships between organizations and the progress toward shared objectives. With collective impact, we are all in the same boat, rowing in the same direction, thus reaching our goals faster.

Do You Think?
With increased societal polarization, especially political, where people are bombarded with "facts" and opinions by pundits and experts, too many people choose to blindly follow their pundit of choice like rats following the Pied Pipers, without really thinking and questioning. I've felt that if more people were exposed to critical thinking principles, they might at least be able to identify when statements, opinions and actions aren't completely rational. This video is about teaching some very basic critical thinking standards with the intent to intrigue the viewer enough about critical thinking to learn more about the subject.

And because we have adopted an ideology were economic winners feel entitled to all the income they earn - even though that income often results from exploiting publicly owned resources - tax revenues are insufficient to generate the public goods that build communities.

Veteran activist and organizer Marshall Ganz with Bill Moyers: discuss the power of social movements to effect meaningful social change...One of Ganz’s themes is the crucial role narrative plays in social movements. “I think it’s particularly important because doing the kind of work that movements do requires risk-taking, uncertainty, going up against the odds. And that takes a lot of hope,”

From abstract: Whereas research on political participation typically investigates a variety of socio-economic and attitudinal characteristics, this cross-national study focuses on the relevance of norms when explaining political participation. We examine respondents' normative beliefs about the importance of various measures of ‘good citizenship’, and their relationship to three modes of political engagement (activism, party membership and voting). We find assigning higher importance to paying taxes/obeying the law is negatively linked to all forms of participation, whereas the opposite is true for norms about the importance of voting and being active in associations. Greater emphasis on norms about understanding others and shopping politically is positively associated with political activism but not with more institutional forms of participation.

No More Coal Exports - Canada vs King Coal (by Eoghan Moriarty)
Attention Metro Vancouver residents: Port Metro Vancouver is in the final stages of approving the creation of a coal port at Fraser-Surrey docks. People all over the area are standing up and saying "No More Coal Exports!" through their communities.  Take action now and help prevent the escalation of coal exports through the lower mainland of BC. Help stop Vancouver from becoming a hub for fossil fuel exports! Talk to your MPs, MLAs, friends, neighbours, coworkers and anyone else who will listen. Contact your community groups and organizations to see what they are doing about this issue. Part of a larger documentary film project on the very important issue of coal exports through Canada, this video was created after a month of filming coal trains, interviewing people and attending rallies all over the lower mainland. It is hoped that it might have some impact on the BC elections in May. Go to nomorecoalexports.com for the latest information about this project. Other organizations which are committed to the grassroots fight against this issue are vtacc.org and wildernesscommittee.org. No More Coal Exports! [email protected]

In 2005, author David Foster Wallace was asked to give the commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Kenyon College. However, the resulting speech didn't become widely known until 3 years later, after his tragic death. It is, without a doubt, some of the best life advice we've ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.
