Module 1: What is Drawing?
Pattern Study 2

For this set of developments I used an oil pastel drawing of a glass bottle top as the starting point. I wanted to explore the patterns within the glass.
I used the same methods as the other pattern study to collect my reference material. Once I had completed all 3 developments I thought the final one resembled a birds eye view of a field.
I went on to collect imagery from NASA satellites, looking for fields, mountains and colours similar to those I had used within my 3rd development. I used those to create my final outcome for this set.
I used watered down acrylic paint to create the base and give it more visual interest than the flat colour. I then embroidered the paper to create more depth and give the illusion of fields, rivers etc. I am very happy with the outcome of this study I really enjoyed working in mixed media and bringing in making skills within drawing.

Pattern Study 1

I started to play with pattern more as the module progressed. I cropped into one of my first observational drawings to look at the shapes within the drawing. I would then redraw that version and then crop into the part with the most visual interest and do that again until I came to a third iteration of the first drawing.
When looking at the third development I saw a strong use of negative and positive space which reminded me of Keith Haring. I went a researched him and found some pieces that interested me. I used them as inspiration for the final outcome for these developments.
I really like the final outcome for this one, I think the limited colour palette works well. I used an ink wash with acrylic paint on top to get a flat straight edge on the shapes. I used Haring's paintings as a guide for how to paint the geometric shapes.

I started by drawing from observation. Using materials I'm familiar with to allow myself to be comfortable with exploring.
Then we moved onto to artist research. I researched George Butler, a reportage illustrator, I wanted to develop my skills in observational landscapes. I found it very fun to work with ink in such a permanent way, my favourite is the first one I think I got the composition perfect.
As we went on I enjoyed exploring the objects in more depth like focusing on a certain aspect of the object, colour, pattern, texture etc. I tried to vary myself between more illustrative and more real, life like, drawing.

College Work

In my year between high school and university I went to college for the entrance to art school/ portfolio prep course. I found it very different than school and I found myself loving the studio environment. Being surrounded by other artists is a feeling I cherish.
I feel my art grew in a way I couldn't have expected I started to trust myself more. I got to try a range of things and use techniques I hadn't used before. My process refined itself as the year went on and the skills I learned helped me move onto uni successfully.

High School Work

In high school I always focused on still life. There is something about capturing the essence of an object or set of objects that has always intrigued me.
I found it fun to play with colours and reflections in my larger paintings. I am especially proud of the larger paintings as the time they took really shows through the outcome. I honed my skills and learnt a lot about how I work during these years.
