This story starts out with a bang—or, rather, a sudden slice—so I'll put the opening to this one under a Read More...

As Kassandra stared at the spurting, bloody stump of what used to be her left forearm, it occurred to her that she probably should have told Kyra the whole truth about the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus.

"Great, merciful Zeus!" Barnabas said. "Your arm!" He had seen Kassandra suffer injuries before, but those had been from blades or blows, not the slicing arc of a rope snapped from a ship's rigging. Now he was standing by the Adrestia's mast with his mouth hanging open at the sight of Kassandra—the great, godlike Kassandra—shorn of one of her limbs.

Kassandra sank to her knees, still staring at the empty air that was once her wrist and left hand. Kyra was going to kill her—perhaps even more than once, for as the Keeper of the Staff, Kassandra could no longer die.

"Oh, fuck me," Gelon said. "Someone bring me some fucking rope." She had seen severed limbs before, during her time as a pirate raiding the sea lanes to Delphi, and she knew what aid to render. Now she was making wild Get over here! gestures to the crewmen gawking nearby, goading them into action.

The world's edges began to blur while Kassandra's blood fountained into her lap. No pain, yet. She had seen severed arms and hands and heads before, too, most of them separated from their owners by a swing of her sword. Such was her strength, to cleave whole parts away from a body. But she had never lost a limb of her own, until now.

Hands grasped her shoulders and held her upright while something tightened around her injured arm. "Keep holding that arm up, just like that." A woman's voice. Gelon. She sounded like Kyra sometimes, that same no-nonsense tone of command. It made Kassandra wish Kyra were here. She'd take one look at the tableau before her—Kassandra kneeling in a pool of blood, Barnabas's stunned gaze, the sailor vomiting over the railing—and put it right to order. She'd know what to do, right? What would she do?
