Concept Evolution: Boyfriend

With a name like Boyfriend it was expected that Starship Entertainment’s 6-member boy group was going to be on the lighter side of the male idol spectrum. Indeed, when Donghyun, Hyunseong, Jeongmin, Youngmin, Kwangmin, and Minwoo made their 2011 debut with the very colorful and ultra-cutesy “Boyfriend” MV, it looked like things were going in that direction.

But, it seems like they had a super long-term vision all planned out that went beyond light and cute. Many saw the group’s name as a hindrance in itself. Honestly, I was originally one of them. How can you move on from a name that permanently keeps you young? The truth is, you can be a Boyfriend at any age…. The question still lies in how and when do you move away from the teenage side of it? Surely their leader Donghyun, who is four and a half years older than the second oldest Hyunseong, must get tired of acting like a love-sick puppy.

The evolution of Boyfriend’s concepts are uniquely timed to the group’s maknae Minwoo. It’s brilliant actually. Although most of their releases after debut like “Don’t Touch My Girl” and “Love Style” were more mature in feel and styling, there was still an ever present touch of youth. Even “Janus”, with its military theme, and “I Yah”, with its schoolboy vs. leather/studs bad boy contrast, gave the group more of a regal feeling rather than an overtly adult theme.

All of that changed, however, around the time Minwoo turned 19 which is the legal age in Korea. Starting with their Japanese release “My Avatar,” elements of “fantasy” started to pop up in the group’s concepts, but that is not all that emerged. The video marked the first appearance of [fake] tattoos on the members. Although small, it gave way to their next Korean release, “Obsession”, which utilized a Peter Pan theme to symbolize that the group was finally growing up. The MV brought us larger, more prominent tattoos on all of the members, as well as the appearance of weapons and a shirtless Hyunseong, much to the delight of numerous (all?) fangirls.

Their statement was clear and it was effective. Their next two releases, “Witch” and “Bounce”, seamlessly carried the “Red Riding Hood” and “Wonderland” respectively. Both mixed in unmistakably mature themes with vampires, blood, and murder. They are never hidden, but they are never exaggerated either. All of these elements are subtle, even if they are in the forefront of the video, it never seems out of place. So, what makes Boyfriend different than other groups who try to change, but are often unsuccessful?

The underlying heart of Boyfriend is still the same. Despite the fact that they’re growing up and exploring darker concepts, the group has stayed true to their style of music. The boys still churn out wickedly catchy dance/pop songs that have an electronic element. Even their more serious ballad-type songs keep that same feeling, a great example being “Alarm” which is clearly a break up song, but never feels like one.

Staying true to their musical style has made Boyfriend unique and entertainment companies should take note. You can evolve a group without killing what they are or putting them at risk of losing their following. You can make idols, male or female, sexy and mature without shocking their audience. Do it gradually and allow the fans to grow with the group. If you want a perfect example of evolving a group’s concepts the right way, Boyfriend is it.
