"I think I'm homophobic," Sirius says, the words rushing out of his mouth like vomit as soon as he and James are the only ones in the room. He's been sitting with the thought for hours, the idea that he actually could be like his family, and he needs to talk to James, the only person who will never judge him.

James's expression, though, is amused. "Homophobic?" he asks, biting the head off of a Chocolate Frog and offering the rest to Sirius while sitting on his bed next to him. "You?"

"I know, I just..." he pauses to take a bite. "Moony's miserable, yeah? He's been so sad since he and Benjy broke it off...It's his first break-up..."

"Yeah, poor guy," James agrees, then freezes looking at the chocolate in his own hand. "Probably shouldn't eat his chocolate, huh?"

"Yeah, but it's just," Sirius gulps, not wanting to admit it out loud, but knowing he needs to say it, "I'm happy, Prongs. Why am I happy? That's so horrible! I- I never liked Benjy and I'm so fucking glad he's gone, even though Moony's sad!"

James gives him another strange look, throwing the packages back to Remus's bed and fixing him with a gentle stare. "Do you think there's a different reason besides homophobia that you didn't like Beni?"

Sirius purses his lips, contemplating. It was just...the way Remus touched Benjy. Looked at him. Smiled at him and laughed at him. Why didn't he do that with Sirius? He-

"Shit," he swears, eyes bulging as he nearly jumps out of his bed.

"Hm," James nods calmly, taking the last bit of Frog Sirius had abandoned on the blanket. "Would be weird for you to be homophobic when you're horribly gay for Moony yourself, eh?"

And Sirius, blushing, can't even deny it.

"'Course, it helps that Moony only went out with Benjy to get over you, so-"

"WHAT?" Sirius yelps, completely shocked.

Conversations of Chocolate Frogs and homophobia are suddenly forgotten.

To everyone claiming that the Marauders (especially Sirius and James) were bullies and they’re just as bad as Severus: people can change. Sirius and James did too. They acknowledged their past mistakes. When Harry brought it up to Remus and Sirius, Sirius admitted he wasn’t proud of their behavior, even calling himself an idiot.

But how can anyone defend Snape? He bullied kids. He was Neville’s biggest fear. He humiliated Hermione. Remember when she was hit by a curse that made her front teeth grow abnormally large? Snape looked at her and said he didn’t see any difference. Let that sink in - Hermione, who was smart, kind and never even let Harry or Ron insult Snape. So what exactly was his problem with her? Was it because she was friends with the son of his old school rival? Or was it because she was muggle-born?

Yes, Snape is a morally gray character but let’s be honest - he was a bad person well into his 30s. Meanwhile, James and Sirius were inmature and cruel at 15. There’s a difference between being an awful teenager who grows up and an adult who chooses to remain vindictive.

Designed an illyrian body plan that balances book canon, aesthetics, and "realism" to my liking. Worldbuilding flying humans often comes down to how strong your ignorance and suspension of disbelief is :) In the case of ACOTAR though, we can just hand wave it and say black box magic is doing 99% the work.

"I know what you're thinking," James says as he sits next to Sirius.

Sirius' gaze doesn't move from Remus.

"No you don't."

James glances across the room, but everyone else is on the other side, gathered around the fireplace.

"You think Remus is the spy," he says.

Sirius' breath catches.

"I love him."

"That wasn't a 'no'."

They sit in a silence for a bit.

"It's terrible of me, isn't it?" Sirius asks, still not meeting James' eyes. "To think someone holds a knife on your neck. On all of our necks. And all I wanna do is lean against the blade, let it press into my skin so I can kiss him. I know he might kill us all with one move, but instead of stopping him, instead of telling you, I love him."

James sighs.

"He's not the spy," he says.

Sirius tears his gaze from Remus and looks at his best friend.

"Don't do that. Don't trust us."

"Of course I trust you."

"I just told you I'd let him murder us all," Sirius says. "How the fuck we survive this war?"

James throws an arm around Sirius' shoulders.

"We just do, Pads. We just do."
