Not me wondering what iwazumi’s, suna’s, Tanaka, and the twins code names are
I believe in the deciphered universe, the nicknames were given to them because of some sort of reputation all the racers possess. I’ll just name out all the ones with nicknames and discuss why I put them as that:
↳ @aikk00’s nicknames and how I interpreted the meaning into the fanfic:
Tetsurou Kuroo - D.K. He’s well liked and loved by a lot of street racers, and probably the best at drifting (hence Drift King) also I’m very sure it’s just a homage to Takashi’s DK nickname from Tokyo Drift, which I think fits Kuroo very well.
Tooru Oikawa - Cypher I think this nickname is so fucking cool for Oikawa. The whole plot of deciphered is literally based on this amazing nickname. The google search dictionary meaning of “cypher/cipher” is a secret, disguised way of writing; a code. The opposite, deciphered is to succeed in understanding, interpreting, or identifying (something). Since Oikawa’s a blank slate and impossible to crack/get to know, I made his whole personality/facade based around that in the fanfic. The whole plot is centered around Oikawa opening up to his own internalized trauma, past actions, and letting himself become vulnerable again as he slowly opens up. Thus, deciphered was born.
Also, I put a homage to his driving style too. Since I mention in the fanfic that Kuroo was the one to teach Oikawa how to drift, their drifting skills are very much similar and to a certain extent, Oikawa’s technique surpasses that of Kuroo’s. His special exit spin is doing a doughnut drift with three revolutions, a perfect 0 engraved into the asphalt (since cypher is also considered 0 as well).
Shinsuke Kita - Sly Fox Besides Oikawa, this one was my favorite to find a reason/reputation for his nickname. I mentioned in the first chapter that when Kita races, he always starts off in last place. Yet, by the end of the race, he quickly makes his way up to second or first place. No one ever sees him do it though, or he’s usually way too quick to let people notice him sneak up. That’s how I interpreted it and I think it’s a kinda cool way to know that his racing technique is also incorporated into the nickname.
↳ My own nicknames I’ve given other racers and my reasoning and interpretation:
Kotarou Bokuto - Blackjack He’s hella loud and you can hear him and his car from a mile away. Funny thing is, I gave him the nickname blackjack because it’s kind of idiosyncratic and oxymoronic. Since the game is a poker variant and it keeps a serious tone, Bokuto is very much the opposite. The game is also based on luck, and since Bokuto doesn’t necessarily have much “skill” (he can’t drift for shit), he relies a lot on his luck when racing and is somehow very good at it.
Kenma Kozume - Snake Eyes Kenma’s is confusing to a lot of people, Snake Eyes, because obviously Nekoma is a cat crew why give Kenma the term “Snake Eyes”? Just like in G.I. Joe, Snake Eyes moves in silence and is very skilled in his expertise, same with Kenma since he prefers to lurk in the shadows behind operations and in racing. Cats also have snake-like eyes too lmao
Tobio Kageyama - Tyrant I mention that Kageyama usurped Oikawa as the reigning street race champion, and it highkey pissed off Oikawa a lot. So they have this obvious rivalry with each other and because Kageyama just came out of nowhere and took Oikawa’s crown like that, everyone just started calling him the Tyrant. He’s only been racing for like six months too, so it was a very quick, brutal force of power to take Oikawa’s position as reigning champion of the underground street races.
Suguru Daishou - Fangs In chapter three I mentioned Daishou’s nickname was Fangs, and I literally only had one reason: Nohebi Clan are the snakes. He got them fangs in the canon Haikyuu show too.
↳ Some new nicknames I gave for the other mentioned racers:
Rintarou Suna - Enigma I think this is my second favorite nickname after Oikawa’s. It ultimately has the same meaning as Oikawa’s. In Kita’s version of deciphered, I will go into more detail on Suna’s personality about it, since he probably has that same sort of demeanor. I headcanon that Suna is basically the second best racer in the Inarizaki Bois. Just like Oikawa, you only ever really know his business (which is dealing). Very mysterious boy indeed.
Atsumu Miya - Thrasher Since Atsumu and Osamu have this racing technique together to surpass other drivers, Atsumu is the one to swerve the side of his car into his target, thus “thrashing” into them. I also headcanon he wears a shit ton of Thrasher in the deciphered universe lmao
Osamu Miya - Ghost Going along with Atsumu’s, while his brother distracts the drivers and cause an accident, Osamu maneuvers past the blockade and usually catches up to the top racers in the front, winning it for the both of them. Similar to Kita’s technique but with more damage involved lmao
Hajime Iwaizumi - Indigo (Indy by Oikawa) Indigo is highkey just a homage to the Indy 500. Also Indigo is blue (Seijoh colors), even though I know it’s like a darker, cooler shade of it. I think it fits Iwaizumi well, he chose this nickname because of the American Indy 500 races that I headcanon he watched on TV when he was younger lol
Tanaka’s nickname will be revealed in Leia’s fanfic (she’ll be choosing it instead of me).

My taste in men is based on what fanfic I'm currently reading.
It could be a party dude in a man-bun with tounge piercings, a gang leader from Argentina that street race, a chill dude with a fox eyes who smokes weed... anyways...
