Firefox is a gateway drug to realizing you can do whatever you want with computers. It starts with getting adblock and then you start thinking about what else is possible

It sucks that there's only 20 minutes in each day. If there was more than that I would get more stuff done I'm sure

wicked truly has the funniest fucking foreshadowing ever. that pretty guy singing about how great it is to be brainless? yeah don't worry about that. oh the wizard saying he feels strangely paternal towards elphaba??? nahhhhhhh that's wild, anyway. oh nessa being gifted some handmade, sentimental shoes from her older sister?????? it's not importantttttt baby girl

as a teenager I tried to start a Thanksgiving tradition of having my family members state one thing they’re grateful of before we start the meal. this replaced the previous tradition where my evangelical great uncle would say grace for 10 minutes straight. my grandma said “I’m grateful for my son.” she has two and didn’t specify which one. I don’t go to Thanksgiving anymore

imo the best retellings are the ones that take advantage of the cracks present in the very text they're up to deconstruct. wicked works in large part because the wizard of oz is told from the pov of someone who's both a child, with a naturally manicheistic worldview, and an interloper, which leaves large blindspots on her perception about what could be actually going on. the first appearance of the wicked witch of the west is her all pissed off that her sister was apparently murdered and plundered in sequence, which is perfectly reasonable, glinda's actions read as shady on close inspection, and when you consider that the wizard sent a child on what he knew was pretty much a suicide mission our perception of him goes from misguided but good hearted old man to manipulative sociopath in the speed of light. it's not "dalmatians killed cruella's mom" shit, is using the natural wiggle room the story provides to interrogate if maybe what we are told at face value is not the entire truth.
retellings also work best when is not just subversion for subversion's sake but when they're going for an angle. wicked does not seek out to redeem the wwotw just because, it's a political allegory. the musical specifically was a commentary on the bush administration, political propaganda, and demonization of the other. is taking on the inherently problematic nature of the Beauty Equals Goodness trope, which the movie plays out textually, and interrogating the ramifications of said trope as a worldview, which establishes a dialogue with the original text instead of just taking its surface motiffs and applying to some generic underdog story.
