In Isaak’s sleepy town, monsters live next door. Most of the townsfolk prefer to avoid the dark, eerie woods, but Isaak enjoys spending his days there. Armed with his grandmother’s stories, he chops wood and plants trees, and keeps the peace between men and monsters. Then he meets the Leshy, the god who guards the forest and all who dwell in it. He is also known for abducting travelers—or tickling them to death. But the god he meets is nothing like the stories he was told, and the more time they spend together the more Isaak hates to leave him. But the Leshy isn’t the only thing lurking in the woods…
Pairing: Fantasy - Gay

Price: $4.99 $4.24

Renewal Flash Fiction Anthology
QSF has a new book out, the latest in our series of flash fiction anthologies: Re.new.al (noun) 1) Resuming an activity after an interruption, or 2) Extending a contract, subscription or license, or 3) Replacing or repairing something that is worn out, run-down, or broken, or 4) Rebirth after death. Four definitions to spark inspiration, a limitless number of stories to be conceived. Only 110 made the cut. Thrilling to hopeful, Renewal features 300-word speculative fiction ficlets about sexual and gender minorities to entice readers. Welcome to Renewal.
I got an honorable mention! If you’re into queer sci-fi things, you should check it out!
Here are some teasers for the stories included! Because these stories are only 300 words each, we’re not supplying long excerpts, but here are the first lines of several of the stories. Enjoy! “Griselda pulled the weeds from between the rows of Valerianella locusta plants in the garden, careful not to disturb the buds that would grow into the babies that were her only real income-producing crop.” —The Witches’ Garden, by Rie Sheridan Rose “I didn’t know how truly the world was in trouble until I went journeying to look for Anisette’s bluebonnets.” —Bluebonnets, by Emily Horner “The ship’s drive malfunctioned at the worst possible time.” —The Return, by Andrea Speed “Before we continue, there’s a rather macabre fact about me I should share.” —Rejuvenation, by Christine Wright “When I died they buried me at the bottom of the garden and returned to the fields.” —Below the Hill, by Matthew Bright “The world is ending and I can’t look away from your eyes.” —Sunrise, by Brigitte Winter ““Losing one’s superpowers to your arch nemesis sucks donkey nuts, I tell ya. And trust me when I say I suck a lot of them.” —Rainbow Powers, by Dustin Karpovich “The day I was born again was damp, rainy—a good day for rebirth, all things considered.” —The Birthing Pod, by Michelle Browne “Intwir's twelve eyes roved over the container, taking in the cracked outer lock and the elasticated fabric stretched tightly over its exterior.” —In a Bind, by S R Jones “‘You’ve reached Androgyne HelpLine. Press one to start service. Press two to interrupt or cancel service. Press three—’” —Auto-Renew, by Ginger Streusel “The doctor tells me that my wife is dying, but I already know.” —I Will Be Your Shelter, by Carey Ford Compton “‘San Francisco was the first to go dark, followed by Los Angeles.’” —When Light Left, by Lex Chase “My fingers lingered on the synthetic skin, trailing soft patterns across my work.” —Miss You, by Stephanie Shaffer Included Authors 'Nathan Burgoine A.M. Bad Weather Prompts
For the crazy weather we’re having, I bring you… romantic prompts for bad weather!
I had to evacuate and I can’t afford a hotel, so I came to this campground but I’m terrible at camping HELP!
My downstairs apartment flooded, but your upstairs apartment is fine. Can I stay with you? (And I brought my cat too I hope that’s okay)
You’re a storm chaser and you helped me thank you but hey wait why are you driving TOWARD the tornado?!
You’re my best friend and we’re waiting out the storm together, and I need to tell you I love you just in case we don’t make it.
We’re roommates and I know we don’t know each other that well, but I am terrified of storms so can I please snuggle with you?
The power’s out, so let’s have a camping adventure! We can roast marshmallows on the stove and tell spooky stories around the Yankee candle campfire (and yes, I’ll protect you since you’re afraid of the dark)
We’re survivors working to get through this together, and I’m getting out with you or not at all. I’ve got your back.
Stay safe out there, everyone!

Dragon Circus AU
Magical universe AU where the circus doesn’t have elephants and horses, but instead has dragons. Character A works for this circus and they absolutely love their job. From nursing newborn hatchlings, to scrubbing down bus-sized adults, Character A is never bored.
Character B is a new hire that will be riding and performing tricks on the backs of the adult dragons. It’s Character A’s responsibility to introduce Character B to all of the dragons – and to make sure that Character B doesn’t get hurt.

I love making new characters. I roleplay all the time, creating lots of little cinnamon rolls to cherish <3. But if you’re like me, maybe you’re bad at fleshing out your supporting cast. Maybe you just created a new character, and you haven’t gotten to know them yet. Never fear! D&D makes it easy to figure out who your character is! All it takes is a little chance and puzzle-solving :)
I started a new D&D campaign a few weeks ago.
The problem was, I didn’t realize it was a new D&D campaign until I arrived! Everyone had thought about their characters—who and what they wanted to play—and I had no idea!
Comparing notes with the team told me we needed a healer/support character who could punch hard, and we probably needed someone who wouldn’t make common folks run away screaming. With that in mind, I decided I’d be a halfling paladin (which is basically a holy armored hobbit), and that my character’s name would be Pumpkin Spice. With that in mind, I filled out most of my character sheet.
But I still didn’t know who Pumpkin was. Sure, she was a brave, scrappy halfling. She had a badass Armor Class. But who was she other than a war hobbit?
Thankfully, D&D 5th edition comes with a set of character backgrounds that help you flesh out your character—and you don’t even have to make all the decisions yourself! Since I wasn’t sure who Pumpkin was, I looked through the list of backgrounds (starting on the D&D 5e Player’s Handbook, pg 125, or through the D&D 5th Edition Wiki link above).
She’s a paladin, I thought. Maybe she could be an acolyte? But Pumpkin didn’t strike me as a ward of a religious temple, raised to service since her youth. With a name like Pumpkin Spice, she had to come from a family—a family that baked, I thought. She was a paladin, so she probably wasn’t a criminal or a charlatan—one would hope. Ultimately, I settled on the Folk Hero background for her, meaning she’s a people’s champion who challenges tyrants. Then came the easy part.
I just rolled for it.
In five minutes, I knew a lot of the big things about my character:
·        * She had led a militia against an invading army, which kicked off her life as an adventure
·        * She tries to always be fair and to see both sides in an argument
·        * Her ideal is fairness; she believes that everyone should be treated equally
·        * Her bonds are fragmented—she has a family, but doesn’t know where they are
·        * She has a terrible secret, known by the members of her community, that keeps her from returning home
Once you have the big things—Defining event, Personality trait, Ideal, Bond, and Flaw—putting your character together becomes like a puzzle. Of course, you could re-roll or alter any quality that doesn’t work for you, but making all the disparate pieces of your character work together can be a lot of fun, and a much different challenge from building a character out of thin air.
Don’t have a D&D game to play? You could still use something like this to build characters outside of D&D, especially in a fantasy setting. And if you don’t have a dice set handy, roll some virtual dice.
Next time I’ll share some of Pumpkin’s full backstory and maybe even introduce you to Skreeeven Slyfeather, my new Aarakocra rogue created through the same method <3

Spooky Camping Prompts!
I have a fun post about using D&D to flesh out character backgrounds (so excited) coming up next week. But this weekend I am going camping, so here are some camping-related prompts in the meantime…
A group of people go out into the woods to relax and party. The only problem? A bunch of cryptids had the same idea. Sasquatch just wants to drink some PBR and go fishing with their buddies, and then Character A comes in to ruin it. Gosh, Character A. Rude.
Or hey, maybe a shy monster just wants to make some new friends…
Or Character A puts their food up in a tree to keep it away from bears. They wake up in the middle of the night to hear somebody munching on their Doritos. Is it a werewolf? A werebear? A taller than average normal bear?
When the campsite/ cabin company double-books group/ character A’s camping spot, they’re forced to endure close quarters with group/ character B. How do they get along? Chummily or not at all?
At the local LGBT-friendly campsite, pride weekend is the same time as the local fairies’ reunion-slash-wild-magic party. Character A has never seen so many pairs of fairy wings or been covered in so much glitter. Was that cute guy joking when he said he was “totally a fairy”?
Lots of spookies hang out in the forest, not just Bigfoot. Learn about some lesser-known cryptids and folktale monsters—like the leshy, the Slavic forest guardian who tickles you to death unless you turn your clothes inside out—and write about Character A’s encounter with them. If you’re looking for inspiration (or to be freaked out or amused) listen to the Cryptid Keeper Podcast for more monsters (and Owen Wilson sightings)
Or hey, maybe Character A gets embroiled in a turf war between rival cryptid factions?
Or maybe Character A’s cabin in the woods isn’t all they hoped it would be. Is there a murderer on the prowl? A group of hostile aliens that just invaded? Whatever it is, Character A is not getting the quiet weekend they hoped for.
There are a ton of spooky things that can happen in the woods, so I hope these keep you guys warm, inspired, and safe through the end of camping season.

Eclipse prompt:
“When the moon swallows up the sun, even the gods can’t see what you do.”
The question is, what do you do?
Sneak into someplace you don’t belong and wreak sweet havoc?
Smooch your BFF? Your worst enemy?
Start a Purge-level killing spree?
My plan is to write up a little something for this prompt by Monday :) I hope you will too! Happy eclipse <3

Flight
In high school, most of us groaned when we heard page requirements. Writing a whole five pages? Inconceivable! Then we applied to college and faced the opposite problem with our college essays. Telling our life stories in 650 words or less seemed impossible—and sometimes it was.
Building a world, creating characters, and telling a story in 300 words is twice as hard.
“Flight” was the theme for Queer Sci-Fi’s Flash Fiction contest this year. My story “The Skimmer” features a flying superhero who’s afraid to fly. It joins a multitude of other excellent flash fiction pieces in the Flight anthology.

While lurking for open LGBT anthologies, I found some great tips for writers on Wayward Ink Publishing’s site! I’ve been guilty of all of these (POV jumps, overuse of dialogue tags, adverb abuse, etc.) and if you are too, these are good things to keep in mind.
