Obsessed with Bard being a hunter and a killer and a provider, this masculine ideal, while Thranduil takes on the stereotypically queenly role of advising against war - and this only after he chooses to emerge from sequestration in Mirkwood, where he’d been sitting for centuries after The War of The Last Alliance like a precious relic gathering dust. Thranduil, we are told, has a personal weakness for white gems, whiteness representing purity and virginity. But Bard doesn't give him white gems, he gives him green ones, representing fertility and change, an heirloom of King Bard's own patriarchal bloodline. Bard gifts Thranduil the Emeralds of Girion to win him over just like Thingol demanded the Silmaril for a bride price, except this time there is no princess in the equation. Symbolically, Bard is the suitor and Thranduil is the bride.
