Song of the Week #2. It was hard to pick which live performance to post because pretty much everything they do live is amazing, but I finally settled on this. Technically it's two songs in one video, but whatever.

Last week was a bit chaotic with the holiday and all so I'll be posting two songs by this band for Song of the Week to make up for missing last week. This is a band I stumbled across some time ago. They are a band of three super talented sisters from Monterrey, Mexico who absolutely rock. I love their music and attitude. I feel this song is a good one to show what they're about, the next will be one of my favorite live performances of theirs. If you like what you see check out their YouTube for more great stuff.

I posted this over on FB, but forgot to post it elsewhere. I'm starting up this thing I call the "Song of the Week" again because I can. I'll probably play around with what day I post a song every week, but here ya go.

October horror movie #31:
Alien: Romulus. I give it 4/5. I finally got here and I've been looking forward to this movie for a long time. It definitely did not disappoint! This a bit late and worse for wear, but it brings a close to another October filled with good scares and creepy stories. Of course, you know I'm still gonna watch a bunch of horror movies in the interim.
The main reason for the lateness? I had a health scare where I almost died and was in the hospital for a week. Fun stuff, but I'm okay and I'm back! Don't worry.
(some spoilers)
Likes: finally another Alien movie that fully captures to feel of the first one (the true isolation, dread, terror, fear of the unknown, vastness of space), borrowed some of the best elements from the other Alien films while improving and adding its own good things, story was pretty different from the other films, the unexpected Ian Holm bot, featured the kinds of characters we don't usually expect in an Alien film (so young, impulsive, not experts/educated for specific thing), Andy and Rain, visual effects, dazzling backdrops, the look of the aliens, great pacing that never really stopped at one point, the human/xenomorph hybrid being so unsettling and terrifying (somehow even more than in Alien: Resurrection)
Dislikes: characters being inconsistent with their views/who they were at times, Rain's character could have been more developed, some references a bit on the nose and not done great
The reference I really enjoyed? "I can't lie to you about your chances, but...you have my sympathies."

Okay, for October horror movie #31 I wanted to do something special (well, probably only special for me). Alien is one of my favorite movies and I greatly enjoy the franchise, but I have yet to see Alien: Romulus. So, I was planning to buy it since I have all of the others (yes, including Prometheus and Covenant). However, I don't get paid until Friday so I won't be able to post about it until Friday evening or sometime Saturday. I feel that it will be a good finale for me. So yeah, don't worry I will be watching a 31st movie. Just not on Halloween unfortunately.

October horror movie #30:
Noroi: The Curse. I give it 4/5. I'm usually not one who enjoys found footage horror movies as much as other types, but this was something special. It was terrifying, interesting, well done, and convincing.
Likes: how real it felt, mostly practical but limited digital effects looked great for 2005, the actors' real and convincing performances, the fact that I forgot I was watching a movie at one point and felt like I was watching an actual documentary (which only added to the fear), feeling the dread throughout, feeling the prevailing and oppressive weight and fear of being cursed, the story and lore, the mystery keeping me invested and curious
Dislikes: a bit confusing and disconnected feeling until it all comes together, the buildup was a little slow and made me nervous (I simultaneously liked and hated this buildup at the same time and it served the movie well despite making me uncomfortable and a little stressed)

October horror movie #29:
Fright Night (1985). I give it 4/5. It was very 80s and a lot of fun as subtle horror comedy. However, it did have a few related issues that didn't allow it to be 5/5. I also think that I'll have to check out the 2011 remake at some point now. That cast sounds amazing. Especially Colin Farrell. I just think he's neat. Okay? (spoilers below)
Likes: how 80s it was (style, music, story, etc.) being made right in the middle of the 80s, how cheesy and over the top it is, cheesy but fun effects, the horror comedy aspect letting you suspend your disbelief, characters instantly likeable and understood, Ed was so much fun and even better when he was turned into a vampire, the Peter Vincent character was brilliant, never having to take any character too seriously, Jerry's character design with that handsome suaveness and threatening presence (seemed more menacing when not in true vampire form actually), Amy looking more terrifying than Jerry in true vampire form (that wide mouth and other things I can't put my finger on. No thank you!)
Dislikes: sexism, misogyny, the dynamic and things that happen between Amy and Jerry being creepy and making me uncomfortable (she's supposed to be a teenager and you're an adult vampire who could be hundreds of years old or more! Ew! I get that he was "charming" her with his vampire powers, but I feel that went too far), Amy needing more of a character instead of being the love interest or damsel in distress
Also, what's with Jerry eating all those damn apples?

October horror movie #28:
Mama. I give it 3/5. Another movie I'm not sure how to feel about. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. It was okay, but could have been better. It's not the worst PG-13 horror movie I've ever seen though. (some spoilers below)
Likes: basic story good, creepy vibes, feeling true concern for the girls and their new family, being invested in what happens to the girls and in what Mama's story was, the mystery of it all, the young actors doing a great for being in this kind of film, was pleasantly surprised by Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau because I had no idea they were in this, Javier Botet's physical performance as Mama, interesting and neat character design for Mama
Dislikes: not all that scary, CGI/digital effects a little spotty, messy plot, certain things cryptic for no reason, Dr. Dreyfus not being more helpful and trying to solve it by himself (getting him killed), not understanding what Mama is and having trouble believing she's only a ghost (seemed like a creature of folklore or a lich with those abilities and that look), never explaining why Mama looked the way she did or what her issues were, that damn tragic ending that I didn't see coming (it wasn't supposed to go down like that damn it!)

October horror movie #27:
Fear Street Part Three: 1666. I give it 5/5. This was pretty great and wrapped up the story nicely. It took the best things from parts 1 and 2 and put them together while adding its own good things. (spoilers below)
Likes: seeing the cast from parts 1 and 2 coming together to play some new characters, great acting, Gillian Jacobs and Sadie Sink doing a great job playing the same character at different stages of life and fully convincing me that they're the same person, that 17th century rave in the woods, exploring the ideas of a witch-hunt and how that can all apply to today, the twist with the Goode family, the satisfying and epic conclusion, also
"Wanna help us kill Sheriff Goode?"
"I'll get my coat."
Dislikes: How angry the witch-hunt stuff made me (but that's what I was supposed to feel), and really nothing significant enough to make me not like and enjoy this movie as much as I do

October horror movie #26:
Five Nights at Freddy's. I give it 2/5. It just wasn't quite what I expected. It had some merits and potential, but it just didn't completely do it for me. And yes, my knowledge of some of the game lore is limited, but I wanted to view this more from the standpoint of it being a good horror movie and that's hard to do with a PG-13 rating. (spoilerish below)
Likes: story between Mike and Abby, family drama, gets the right vibes and feel from the games (from what limited knowledge I have of watching let's plays on YouTube), great character design for Freddy and crew, forgetting that Matthew Lillard and seeing him being a pleasant surprise, Josh Hutcherson's performance
Dislikes: plot felt disjointed and connected poorly/weirdly, certain details about what's going on being needlessly cryptic (why can't people just tell each other shit?), story with why Freddy and crew are they way they are (could have been much simpler. Crazy A.I. instead of ghost children anyone?), Mike's brother being kidnapped felt like subplot that could have been left out and worked around, not really scary or gory at all, pandering to younger audience with PG-13 rating (I mean, I guess the games were for younger horror game fans and the games weren't really gory, but still. Like release an R rated or unrated version like they did with M3gan or something), the fact that the other graphic R rated movies I've been watching probably made me not enjoy this as much

October horror movie #25:
Fear Street Part Two: 1978. I give it 4/5. I think I liked part one more, but this was still very enjoyable. It kept the same vibes from the first film while doing its own thing well. (spoilerish stuff below)
Likes: feeling immersed in a late 70s summer camp (vibes, music, attitudes, references), the clear influence of the Friday the 13th movies, the cast, good characters, drama and character conflict that is slowly dealt with throughout, wanting to know more about the characters holding my interest, the new and old lore from both movies coming together, seeing how story elements can and will connect, threat feels worse due to isolation of camp (no true refuge of safe place to retreat to)
Dislikes: everyone was an asshole for too long before conflicts with selves and each other were solved (got sick of everyone's attitude and it seemed that was resolved at a better pace in part one), I could see the so called "plot twist" from a mile away, Nick Goode doing such an about face at the end purely for plot reasons (I just wasn't believing it)
