"Eh," he grinned around his now lit cigarette. "Anywhere with more sun than England counts as a holiday."

Rip shrugged eloquently, flicking ash into the provided receptacle. "We have half of a plan. Still a lot more than we usually do." He took a short drag. "She does. A Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. From what I heard he seems to be a textbook Watcher, by which I mean he hasn't been outside of his study halls for most of his adult life. He's not even thirty yet."

"Christ, don't remind me," John grumbled. "Almost had meself fooled that we were on holiday."

John plucked Rip's cigarette from his lips and put it, along with his own, between his lips. He lit them both and handed Rip's back. The first hit was deep and long. It had been hours since his last smoke during a layover in New York. He got pleasantly light-headed and it took the edge off his previous annoyance.

"Do we have a plan? I feel like we fell asleep over the mid-west still figuring that out. Won't she have a Watcher or whatever?"

"I've texted her," he said, cigarette already between his lips before they even made it to the smoking area. "Said she'll be glad to have the company whenever we've sorted out our business." Rip dug into his bag, rummaging for a zippo he knew he'd stashed in a deep pocket and away from airport security's sneaky hands.

"Where's the bloody thing—" He eyed John meaningfully when he came out empty handed. "Won't you help us out, love?"

The heat sucked at his skin as they stepped out the sliding doors. It had been years since the last time he'd been to California, probably not since he and Rip had gone on an extremely extended holiday after he'd been kicked from Ravenscar. Though Rip would likely disagree, he was glad they'd be taking a cab to the hotel they would be staying at in L.A. The plan was to rent a car in the morning, be in Sunnydale by the evening, and hopefully run into the Slayer.

"Bugger me, I'm glad I let you convince me to pack me coat instead of wearin' it on the flight," John groused, dragging his rolling suitcase behind him as he headed toward the smoking section. Usually he didn't care but American airports made him nervous, swarming as they were with security and gross consumerism. "Y'reckon we should drop in on Zee while we're at it? I don't think her residency in Vegas starts for another month or two."

“I don’t know. I might, if I thought it was necessary.”

“if the stakes were high enough, but they’d have to be pretty damned high.”

“there are times when it’s necessary to die for one’s ideals. do you believe this is one of those times?”

“I thought it was important for you to see him again.”

“it’s not too late to change your mind.”

“it’s still not possible.”

“can you walk?”

“let’s find out.”

“sometimes the moral obligations are less than clear.”

“god knows I don’t always succeed.”

“you wouldn’t complain even if you had cause.”

“I ask you, I beg you.”

“do not continue to enlist the cooperation of [____].”

“put on your best poker face.”

“we have good reason to mistrust one another, but we have even better reason to set those differences aside.”

“now the question is: who will take the initiative?”

“I assure you I intended no deception.”

guess who set about rewatching buffy in order to flex their writing muscles once more but only managed to watch the dark age again. anyway. happy new year!

Buffy: Xander, what about your basement? The guys haven't seen us together that much and there's enough room. Willow: Ooh. Plus mirror ball. Xander: Cool! Come on down and boogie at Xander's hideaway. Anya (less happy): Yes, come boogie. Giles: Absolutely not! I will not squat in that dank hole. Spike: What, it was good enough for me, but you're above it all? Giles: Precisely.
