Casino (03/18/2025)
Another Scorsese checked off the list. It is incredible how he manages to direct gangster films with pretty much the same casting (i.e. Goodfellas) and have them be completely different in everything from set design to tone.
The only thing that remains the same however is the way women are portrayed in these films. I don't have a problem with it per see, I think Scorsese's females characters add so much to the stories and they are always quite complex. Moreover, the female character's downfall is by the end of these films relate to the unfortunate environments they live in and the men they associate with.
Casino did get a bit frustrating at times when Ginger continued to hang on to her deadbeat boyfriend while married. It was especially shocking when she tied up her daughter in her room. I was upset by this portrayal at first, however, as I thought about the film, I thought that the troubled nature of her character and her slow descent into madness was heartbreakingly realistic.

Another frustrating day. I waited all day for a call from my boss but heard nothing. I just watched Succession, played history quizzes, and went through the old email. I hate being unproductive and I hate waiting around for a call that never comes.
I was worried that at 4:30 I would get a call to do a million things, that would have been way worse. I'm worried that tomorrow I'll have to do a million things that ultimately will only get partway done because my boss will go mia again. I don't want to sit in an office all day doing nothing. Just a complete waste of my time.
I just don't want any regrets. I really want to live life to the fullest. I might join that book club I've been getting updates on and see if that is something that works for me. I need a social aspect to my routine. Isn't sitting in a room alone for hours on end a form of torture? We'll see if tomorrow is any better. Hopefully I can just post and send out all the work that has been done already.

Companion-watched 02/01/2025
I was very impressed by this. Didn't really know what to expect going in, especially since it's around 1:30 runtime compared to the current trend of the 2+ hour movie. However, I felt that the pacing and storytelling was expertly done.
Iris, a seemingly normal young woman who seems maybe a tad obsessed with her boyfriend turns out to be a 'companion' robot. This reveal, given to us around 20 minutes in was foreshadowed subtly but was still surprising. After unraveling her boyfriend's plan, involving her becoming a murderer, she does everything she can to survive, eventually receiving programming to become her own, intelligent person.
I enjoyed the idea of the person turning on the machine, something I have never seen as sci-fi films typically feature human creations turning on their makers. Sophie Thatcher did an excellent job underscoring the humanity in her character, leaving the audience with no choice but to root for her.
Such an entertaining watch with great performances all around, looking forward to seeing more projects from this director and the rest of the cast!

Just got back from the Central Cee show. It was so much fun! Minus the crowd. Like where was security? I thought I was about to be in the middle of a fight when the three girls in front of me started yelling and pushing each other. He played all of the hits, my ideal concert.
It's been a nice weekend. Looking forward to when it warms up, then I can make some plans to go into the city, start going to the gym, and start making travel/new job plans. Definitely looking forward to a positive future in the short term :)

I met with the gallerist today in the city that my sister met on her flight. He was so nice and we had a great conversation. He gave me some great advice going forward that I am going to take to heart. It is so amazing that I have made such a good connection in the city where it is so hard to meet people.
In the meantime, I need to seriously start thinking about next steps in my career. He told me it would take 6 months to get another job and that I should apply to any job, whether I am overqualified or under, just to get out of the suburbs. That was great to know, as I am so ready to move on. I would love to work at his gallery but I don't think he's hiring. Maybe in the future! I cant believe I was nervous going in. I guess I have encountered so many rude, pretentious people so far I am surprised when people are actually decent lol. Anyway, it feels good to have a better outlook on things and actually get real advice from someone in the industry. In the meantime, I am still frustrated by my current job, but I shouldn't feel that bogged down, since I have more of a plan to leave.
