Some Signs of Substance Use Disorder
A California-based medical professional and executive, Gilbert Varela, MD possesses more than three decades of experience in the medical field. For nearly two decades, Dr. Gilbert Varela has led as the medical director and CEO of Sadler Healthcare, Inc., a Los Angeles-based company that provides residential services for people suffering from substance abuse problems. Also known as drug addiction, substance use disorder is a disease characterized by an inability to control the use of a drug or medication due to severe brain and behavioral changes. Drugs, in this case, encompass all substances that are capable of generating psychoactive effects in the brain. They include marijuana, alcohol, and nicotine. Different categories of drugs have different levels of addiction potential. For instance, opioid painkillers have higher chances of causing addiction. Most people get addicted to drugs because the drug makes them lose connection with reality to some extent. This is also known as the feeling called a high. With time, a person will need a higher quantity of the drug to get the high effect. As their drug use increases, they find it difficult to survive without the drug. When they try to stop the drug use, they begin to feel intense cravings and may start having some physical illness known as withdrawal symptoms.
