Home for the Holidays
(Day 8 of 25 Days of Kitbell! Thank you everyone for not telling me my writing stinks and letting me get back into enjoying writing lol)
It was a chilly Saturday afternoon in December, and Kit and Randolph had just pulled into a sprawling tree lot on the edge of town. The air was thick with the scent of pine and fresh-cut wood, and Christmas music was playing softly from a nearby speaker. Their new home—nestled in a quiet neighborhood in Buckhead —was starting to feel like a real home, and this was the first Christmas they'd be celebrating there.
It was also the first Christmas they'd be hosting both of their families under one roof for a full week. Molly, Derek and Josie had all arrived yesterday and settled in with Amelia and Harrison not far behind. while Jake, Gregg and Sammi made it in this morning. It was a full house for the holidays, and something Randolph had been hoping they could do for years.
"I'm not sure how I feel about this," Kit said, eyeing the rows of trees. Her long, golden hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail, and her dark green scarf was snug against the collar of her coat. "We've never had a big family Christmas before. I haven't even cooked for this many people in so many years, or even had this many people over in a long, long time."
Randolph slipped his hand into hers as they strolled through the lot. "They're family," he said, squeezing her fingers. "It’ll be fine. We have more than enough room, the girls are thrilled to finally have time to play together, and you aren't going to be cooking alone. Besides, it’s about time they all came together. We’ve been talking about this for years."
Kit raised an eyebrow. "You’re not just saying that to reassure me, are you?"
Randolph grinned, that familiar half-smirk she loved so much. "Maybe. But I’m serious. It’s going to be great. And as for the tree…"
He gestured toward the rows upon rows of Christmas trees, some towering as high as fifteen feet. Others were a little more modest in size, their pines full and lush but would all be welcome additions to their new living room.
Kit squinted up at one of the larger trees. "That one is ridiculous. It’s like… a forest in a living room."
"Not too big for you?" Randolph teased, nudging her shoulder.
Kit rolled her eyes. "It’s not the size that bothers me. It’s the fact that it might be taller than our ceiling."
Before they could get into a debate about the perfect tree size, a voice boomed from across the lot.
"Hey! Mom! Randy!"
Kit turned, seeing Molly waving frantically from a nearby row. Behind her stood Derek, Amelia and Harrison with Josie and Sammi, the girls chasing each other around a tree with their little Santa hats on. "Come look at this one!" Molly called out.
Randolph gave Kit a knowing smile. "Ready to see the kids agree with me?"
Kit sighed but smiled back, giving his hand a little squeeze. "You're not getting a tree that hits our ceiling, Bell."
They made their way to the group, who had stopped in front of an enormous tree. It was a grand tree, perfectly shaped, with lush, dark-green needles.
"That’s the one," Molly declared. "Look at it! It's perfect! It’s big, it’s full, it’s—"
"Too big," Kit interrupted, eyeing it with concern. "We can't even fit anything towards the top of that, we couldn't reach it!"
Molly narrowed her eyes. "You’re the one who always says bigger is better, Mom."
Kit gave her a pointed look. "That was about… other things."
Derek chuckled and sidled up next to her. "Kit's right. I mean, look at this thing. It’s like it was grown for a cathedral, not a living room. There’s no way it’s going in here."
Before the conversation could devolve into more discussion of tree sizes, another voice interrupted.
"I think this one is much more… charming."
They turned to see Jake, coming around a row with Gregg. Jake was pointing over to the other side, to a smaller, more modest tree, about 8 to 10 feet tall, with perfect symmetry and a lovely, classic shape. It looked like it belonged in a cozy living room with a roaring fire.
"This one’s gorgeous," Gregg added, his voice full of enthusiasm. "It’s just the right size."
Kit and Randolph exchanged a glance. "See? That one looks great," Kit said, relieved that they might have found a compromise.
But just as everyone was about to settle on the smaller tree, Josie, who had been tugging on her grandmother’s coat sleeve, suddenly gasped loudly and pointed.
"Look! Look!" she shouted, her eyes wide.
Everyone turned to see a small, shimmering snow-white tree in the corner of the lot near the checkout. The tree had been decorated, with bright vibrant lights, and brightly colored tinsel on every single branch.
"I want that one! Sammi, look at it!" Josie cried out, her voice full of wonder.
Kit and Randolph shared a glance. "What do you think?" Kit asked.
Randolph rubbed his chin thoughtfully, not wanting to hurt Josie's feelings. "Well… It’s certainly… dramatic."
"I think it’s beautiful!" Josie chirped, bouncing in excitement. "It’s like a snow queen tree."
Molly chuckled, patting Josie on the head. "We’re not doing a snow queen theme this year, sweetie."
"Why not?" Josie asked, looking a little disappointed.
Randolph grinned. "Maybe we can save the snow queen tree for next year."
After a few more rounds of deliberations, Kit—ever the voice of reason—finally suggested they compromise: they would get the perfect size tree and allow Sammi & Josie to pick out the small, "snow queen" tree for the room they were staying in.
"We are going to have the best ornaments on it too, Josie. We should put it in our room at Grandpa and Grandma's house every year!!" Sammi declared as they started to pay for the trees.
As they loaded the tree onto the roof of their car, Kit couldn’t help but smile. After everything they had been through, this felt like the beginning of something truly special.
"Well," Randolph said as they settled into the car, "that was… an adventure."
Kit laughed. "You said it."
As they drove home, the trees—both the big one and the little snow queen tree—tied securely to the roof, Kit squeezed Randolph’s hand. "I think we’ve got this."
