*Bakusquad chat*
The whole Bakusquad except Bakugo: *talking about something stupid*
Bakugo: *bursts into chat after several weeks of silence*
Bakugo: Motherfuckers, quick, where can I hide the corpse?
Kaminari: OMG, Bakubro, did you just kill someone?
Mina: Bet a hundred, it's Midoriya.
Sero: Yes, no one even doubts.
Kirishima: *typing a message*
Kirishima: Drag into the bathroom, chop into pieces and fold in different dense bags. I got a shovel, I’m on my way.
Bakugo:
Bakugo: Now you bastards understand why he’s my best friend?

So, I know that Kamino was probably the birth of Kiribaku (or, at least, the reason for it’s popularity), and there are a lot of reasons for that.
I think the biggest is just how much significance is put on Kirishima’s reactions and their relationship. For story reasons, I do understand why this happened, but, at the same time, there were ways that Horikoshi could have drawn and written these scenes without putting so much significance into it.
For Example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Kirishima is so out of character.
I mean, out of character within the restraints that make sense of his character, but this Kiri, this distraught and yelling and no-smiling Kirishima, does not show up again. Not before this moment, and not after. Even in later arcs, he only ever gets this emotional when upset with himself - which is the point! He takes the fact that he couldn’t do anything for Bakugou personally.
and he doesn’t do that again.
The point, though, is that this didn’t have to be portrayed this way. During the USJ arc and, later, during the Raid arc, he’s gung-ho and a little reckless about rescuing people. He doesn’t get this upset over it - he’s enthusiastic about it. He also is shown at multiple points to be encouraging his fellow classmates. So, this could have been done by Kirishima making an impassioned, rallying speech as he’s been shown before to make.
Instead, He is clearly upset, he’s yelling, and he’s being very emotional and self-centered about his arguments. Instead of telling everyone why they should be doing this, he is defensive and upset. We never see Kirishima yell at his classmates like he does here.
The way Horikoshi does this just puts so much significance on how this is personally affecting Kirishima, when he didn’t have to, since Kirishima has, on record, already wants to put his classmates first. He’d want to help rescue Bakugou without it affecting him so closely.
But then -
Tumblr media
This panel is significant enough. Look at Kirishima’s expression. He looks astounded that Mido would think he needed to be the one to reach out to Bakugou. This wasn’t even really something that needed to explain; later they have Bakugou justifying being rescued because All Might couldn’t focus on the villains because of his presence, and that makes sense! Bakugou isn’t dumb, and the manga had been trying to hammer this point home for a while, so it makes complete sense that he would put his pride aside to give All Might a winning chance.
He could have just had Kirishima take point without explaining why and had Bakugou explain the thing about All Might being preoccupied thanks to him, and that would have been that. It would have made sense, it wouldn’t have been ooc, and it wouldn’t have put so much significance on Kirishima and Bakugou’s relationship.
But, this panel alone would have been fine - they’re friends okay so it makes sense that he’d be the one to reach out.
So if they had left it here, it would have been fine.
But then, Hori -
Tumblr media
spends most of a page explaining why exactly it had to be Kirishima.
And this is what I mean about putting significance - this was not needed. All Hori did was hammer in our heads over and over again that Kirishima was important to Bakugou, that Bakugou - who acts like he’s constantly peerless - considers him an equal, and that he would only let Kirishima do this.
This was just not something that needed to be explained. For narrative reasons, it’s unnecessary, because all the actions they take after this point still make sense without this explanation. And yet, Hori still focuses on it And by focusing on it, he puts significance, and when he puts significance on it, he makes it important.
Up until this point, there hadn’t been a lot of focus on their friendship aside form Bakugou tutoring Kirishima and, earlier, the USJ and Sports festival arcs, they hadn’t had a lot personal interaction. While it sets up a relationship that is very important to both of them later on, at this moment, it’s unnecessary.
And then -
Tumblr media
They show the rescue and that’s important, that’s okay. But then -
Tumblr media
They show it again, and damn, if that isn’t the most romantic framing I’ve ever seen.
This panel didn’t need to be drawn! It, once against, puts so much significance on the two of them and their relationship, and it didn’t have to. Everything would have still made narrative sense if they hadn’t put such focus on Kirishima and Bakugou in these chapters.
Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, I’m going to go cry over these boys for a little while.
