I really love that the scene of Jackie helping Misty do her makeup is after she's read Shauna's journal, at the point where Jackie is deeply depressed, deeply disillusioned and desperately seeking for a sign, any sign, that Shauna feels the slightest bit of guilt for what she's done.
A couple of scenes before, Jackie is just....prodding and prodding Shauna, going for all the things that should, by rights, be triggering huge amounts of guilt in her.
Rutgers! Rush week! Except you were never planning on going to Rutgers with me, were you? When were you going to tell me? Mistakes and never being able to fix them! Like how you slept with my boyfriend and got pregnant with his baby. Being naive. Like how I was naive to trust you, to think you loved me like I loved you. Not wanting to compete over the same guy. Because I wouldn't even look at someone you liked, whereas you slept with my boyfriend, yet somehow you think I should be loyal to Natalie?
There's such a cold bitterness to Jackie all the time she's talking to Shauna but when she's talking to Misty, she's warm, she's nice. She's not herself- you can see the weariness, the resignation, the sadness that's there- but you can also see how Jackie, who has every reason to be bitter, actually doesn't give Misty her talk on how love is an illusion: she encourages her as much as she possibly can, she manages to muster up the kindness and compassion that no one has shown to her.

was just thinking of my princess pookie bear jackie and her unadulterated gay sweater slay. it's so crazy to me whenever i remember that she actually did push van out of the way when the plane nearly chopped her head off, like she had no way of knowing that it would turn off in time, like she was super willing to sacrifice herself for van, and sure it might have been the guilt talking, but wow, like bare minimum that tells us is that jackie, truly, deeply, valued shauna's life more than she did her own, like okay. she was hella willing to die for van as long as shauna wasn't dying with her. it's shauna's survival before anyone else's. so yeah. huh. i guess its perfect that she ensures shauna's survival not just after her death, but by her death. her death is essential to shauna's survival, and so i guess, in a really twisted way, it's exactly what jackie would have wanted. have a normal day i guess.

mirror jackie giggles at that. a full, bodied, giddy little giggle. the kind that would have made anyone crack a smile back at her and eventually join in once upon a time ago. "jackie taylor, with no friends, talking to herself in the mirror like some kind of lunatic."
"who would have thought, right?" it's not meant as insult, but it probably sounds like one anyways. she was blunt like that, but she was genuine, blurting out her thoughts without consideration. it's just commentary on the ridiculousness of it all, the perfect girl in the mirror who had it all, and the spiraling woman perpetually on the edge of losing it on the other side.
"what are you even doing? come on, you're embarrassing me."
"well, when you push everyone else away, jackie," the girl in the mirror shakes her head disapprovingly.
it doesn't matter who someone is, or how old they are. there's something about the judgmental glance or the barely concealed snicker of a teenaged girl that strikes a universally familiar chord of insecurity. it plucks on the instinct to hide, to run away, to snap back.
this girl doesn't seem nearly as malicious as a teenaged girl could be, at least right now. she's disappointed, and she makes that so painfully obvious. but she's not cruel. "you have no one left to talk sense into yourself but,"
the girl crosses her arms, and she looks her wearier counterpart up and down. big scrutinizing hazel eyes.
"well, you."

' go AWAY — '

her tone is less ANGRY, more annoyed when she sees the familiar face in the mirror, right behind her own . young, fresh, naive. a reminder of better times jackie likes to forget ever happened .
' i'm busy right now. we can't all have the luxury of being [ perpetually seventeen and irritating ] , jacqueline. ' she's insane . jackie's decided she's fucking INSANE, because she's arguing with her younger self in the mirror and the younger self is w i n n i n g .
' why are you here, anyway? you were quiet. it was nice. ' it's always nice when that smirking face, that smug voice is gone . if only for a short time .

"those are pretty. are they for me? you shouldn't have." it's an unmistakable rasp that's frequently sarcastic but not derisive, more playfully teasing than actually malicious. who could forget it?
ah. and there she is, half sitting, half leaning against the upright stone slab, where flowers were just placed at the base. she smiles brightly, warmly, under the ray of light peeking between gloomy clouds that falls against her face just perfectly. like it's always seemed to do. like it aggravatingly still does.
"it's been awhile," she says, and it sounds like an accusation but also a regret and an apology all at once. because it has been just that. awhile. yet she doesn't look a day older than eighteen. and she never will.

"we're just shells with nothing inside." — is she a real? a hallucination? an ambiguously supernatural portrayal of 1996 jackie taylor from yellowjackets. penned by kim.

oh these girls are freaks. honestly the cannibalism and sacrificial murder rituals they committed are somehow the least surprising thing they’ve done
