ANOTHER AMAZING FIC FROM KATIE LETS GOOOOO!!!!
The way I made sure to listen to the songs this was inspired by while reading. I think you really grasped the mood of both songs (imo) and!!! Let me tell y'all, this did not disappoint (Katie never disappoints 🫶)
AND VAMPIRE SUA!!! Crazy how I'm still whipped even though her character in this is... well, yk.
I love how well written this is and my GOD this hurt, but yk what? It's fine. I love horror and I love the way you write your fics so it's a win-win and an automatic fave for me ☺️🫶
bloodsucker, famefucker
A/N: Happy early Halloween, folks! For those who are unaware, I post a light-hearted, sweet fluffy fic and then something more on the horror, gore side of things. This fic is my horror one, so I'd skip this if you're more of a fluff person! I hope the haunted season has gone well for you, and I look forward to bringing more Halloween joy next week. :)
TW: Vampires, horror-esque descriptions, blood, violence against Reader/SuA, home invasion, biting, major character death, mentions of cheating and being a bad partner, OOC SuA, friendship break-ups, the best kind of angst, magic but I bend it to the plot's will, partying, alcohol mentions (everyone mentioned is old enough to partake)
Acknowledgments: Inspired by Vampire (Olivia Rodrigo) and Control (Halsey), and the lovely @sanccharine mishaps gone right series. 🫶 ty for reading this fic ahead of time, and I apologize for any future transgressions in relation to a sequel. ;)
Summary: You're stuck in a rut a few months after your break-up with Bora, but a friendly date helps you feel ready to jump back into dating. Your ex, however, decides that she has to stick her fangs into you one last time to show who's really over who.
♡ Masterlist ♡
“Vampires suck.”
“Yeah, well, no shit,” Yoohyeon sighs before throwing her flashcards against the table, “how am I supposed to pass this exam with basic information like that?”
You sit across from the table in a private study booth on the second floor of the campus library. Yoohyeon, your best friend since high school, is studying for her first Vampiric History exam as you are trying, and horribly failing, to focus on your homework for Applied Mathematics For Sorcery.
Your focus falls back to the screen as your phone displays a bright collection of images from someone you followed. Her smile is bright and immortal, given the sharp front teeth that are proudly bared, but that’s not what you’re focused on.
The fourth picture, since you had dared to scroll that far, was the same vampire locking lips with another vampire from a different coven.
The problem was that you had forgotten to block all of your ex-girlfriend’s friends on all social media, and you were currently staring at a picture of SuA kissing someone else two months after you broke up.
You carelessly toss your phone on the table, forgetting to lock the screen, as Yoohyeon curiously eyes your phone.
“Don’t tell me you’re-“
“-She cheated on me, Yooh. How am I supposed to forgive her?”
“You didn’t, and you walked away from her,” She digs in her backpack, presumably for a snack, “as you should have.”
“Is it okay to not be over her?”
“Hey, don’t beat yourself up,” Yoohyeon tosses a granola bar across the table for you before opening hers, “it’s her loss. You’re the coolest person I know.”
A light smile rests on her face - Yoohyeon always knew how to make you feel better.
“Thanks, Yooh,” You say as you grab the granola bar on the table, “do you have any clue how to solve geometry in relation to spell casting?”
“No, so we’re going to go ask Dami for help.”
You shrug before closing your computer and beginning to pack your stuff up.
“Works for me.”
~
“Dami-ah!” Yoohyeon pounds on the dormitory door as you pull your backpack over your shoulder.
Your mind wanders back to the photos you saw earlier as Minji, SuA, and Siyeon partied together as if you all weren’t close a few months ago.
As if it wasn’t your fault that your friend group was split in two.
“Dami, answer the damn door before Yoohyeon breaks it down!” Handong calls from the inside as Yoohyeon continues to rap her knuckles against the door.
“I got it!” Gahyeon yells before the door opens. “You guys could have called-“
“I know, but we wanted to surprise you-“
“-You need help with your homework?”
“We do.” You mumble in defeat as Gahyeon gives you a quick hug.
“It’s good to see you, y’know?” She rubs your shoulder before giving you a reassuring look. “You’re more than welcome here at any time, okay?”
“Thank, Gahyeon,” You pause as you let out a deep breath, “I needed a distraction.”
“You saw Bora’s post, didn’t you?” Gahyeon rolls her eyes before closing the door behind you and
Yoohyeon. “We should throw a party, or like a mixer! It would be so much better than what she did.”
“As long as it’s not in this dorm room, I’m down with the idea.” Handong adds in as she is perched on the top bunk of the bunk bed.
Gahyeon crashes on the bunk below Handong as Yoohyeon hops on the bed on the other side of the room.
“Dongie, have you started studying for that exam yet?” Yoohyeon asks as she pulls out her notecards.
“A bit. Do you want to study together?”
“Please help me.” Yoohyeon sets her backpack on the bed as you set your stuff on the bed next to hers.
Your eyes turn to the desk next to the bunk bed where Dami is studying for one of her more advanced classes.
“Do you need help with math?” She asks while doing a computation on her phone.
“I could use help for Applied Mathematics in Sorcery from my favorite sorceress.” You teasingly say as you grab some materials from your backpack.
Dami raises one hand up, and without breaking attention from her studies, she pulls another chair up to the desk.
“Thanks for that,” You set down your notebook, pencil, and computer, “and I apologize in advance because you’re going to need to re-explain this entire chapter to me.”
~
“Why does everything you say make more sense than whatever the professor was going on in class?” You sigh in relief as you submit a perfect homework assignment online.
“You’re welcome. I’m happy to help with anything.” Dami takes care to emphasize the last word as your phone buzzes.
“I’m sorry,” You pause for a moment to grab your phone from the table, “let me look at this before we change subjects.”
You open up the notification that takes you straight to your text messages.
Unknown Number: Jagi, I’m sorry that I hurt you so much.
Babe, why won’t you answer my texts? I know you blocked me but I missed up.
*Messed ypu.
Fuck, I just miss you, and I’m not sorry about it.
“Who is it?” Yoohyeon peeks over the top of the bunk bed as you toss your phone to her.
Dongie manages to catch it before Yoohyeon’s face does, and they gasp in sync with one another.
“She did not-“
“Oh, she did,” Yoohyeon looks at the alarm clock with a chuckle, “and she’s already drunk before nine o’clock.”
A hand on your right arm pulls you back to Dami, who looks at you with confusion and concern mixed together in her gaze.
“Are you alright?”
“I’m just tired of the constant reminders that I wasn’t enough for her. It makes me wonder if I’ll ever truly be over her, or if I’m just going to miss her for the rest of my life.” You quietly admit as Gahyeon snatches your phone out of Dongie’s grasp.
“What are you-“
“-That’s it! I’ve had enough of them,” Gahyeon spits out before grabbing her phone, “and we’re going to do something about it. Everyone, clear your schedules on October 30th. We’re throwing the best party that this campus has ever seen!”
Gahyeon hands you back your phone, and you quickly shove it in your pocket as she starts typing on her phone.
“This is great and all, Gahyeon,” Handong climbs down the bunkbed to grab something from the mini fridge, “but I’m only okay with this plan if they are.”
Dongie’s eyes meet yours as she quickly places a reassuring hand on your shoulder before bending to grab a drink from the mini fridge next to you.
“I think it’ll be fun, especially with Gahyeon planning it.” You gently move Handong’s hand from your shoulder as you nod at Gahyeon. “Just let me know what I need to bring, okay?”
Gahyeon cheerfully pumps her free hand in the air as the other girls laugh at her antics.
“Okay, Yooh and Dongie, since you’ve got the most experience with party planning, I’ll need you to-“
Your eyes go back to Dami, who wistfully stares at the girls in front of her.
“You don’t have to go, y’know?” You take her hand on your arm and interlace your fingers with hers as you set your hands on the table, “I wouldn’t want you to feel uncomfortable just for my sake.”
“I don’t mind, I promise. I just don’t like going to parties that-“ She pauses until you nod at her for permission, “Bora and Siyeon used to drag me to.”
“If Gahyeon gets too out of hand, Dongie will reel her back in. I want this to be something fun for all of us, a moment to stop worrying about school for a night.”
“Are you sure that school is all that’s on your mind?” Her eyes dare to read within your mind, and despite the turbulence within your heart, you find yourself at peace when discussing such matters with Dami.
“I don’t know if I miss SuA anymore, or if I just miss having someone to tell every silly little thing to.” You confess.
“You know I’m always available to talk to you, no matter the hour or day, right?” She asks as you nod, “As for the other matter, why not put yourself out there again? Just go on a less formal date, something low-commitment, to see if you want to go back into the realm of dating.”
There’s a spark of expectation and hopefulness in her as her eyes linger on your intertwined hands for a moment, but her gaze quickly returns back to you as you open your mouth.
I wonder what that was about…
“For someone who doesn’t do a lot of dating, you have awfully good dating advice,” You tease as a small blush crosses her face, “and that’s not a bad idea. I think it would be good to put myself out there again, just
as a test.”
~
Dates were something of a new area for you, as most of your dates with SuA included staying home and studying or going out with friends and partying. You were also around a group, so you had the comfort of a friend to look at for.
Here, in the coffee shop, it was just you, the coffee cup you were holding on to for dear life, and a cute elven girl named Chou Tzuyu.
“How are you finding your studies?” She asks before tucking a small piece of hair behind her ear.
You were, to say the least, mesmerized by her beauty, so you cough and shyly look away when you notice that she is speaking to you.
“They’re going well, but having an individualized major instead of a set path of study can be stressful at times.” You admit as you recall your struggles with math earlier in the week. “Math has been a struggle for me, but I have a friend who is bright like you.”
“I’m not the only one you get answers from?” She raises an eyebrow at you as you scoff.
“I can do the homework for my humanity-focused classes, but these sorcery classes are kicking my ass.”
You roll your eyes as you think of the pile of math homework awaiting you. “I’m thankful for your help with the history classes, you are a lifesaver.”
“You’re helping me practice teaching when I go for advanced studies at the university, so I am thankful for you as well.”
You take a small sip from your cup as your thoughts wander again.
This is going okay, and she’s really pretty, but I’m not feeling anything special like I did with-
“Why did you ask me on a date?” Tzuyu directly asks as your heart sinks in your chest.
Oh no, she’s going to think this is a rebound and I’m going to lose another friend after everything-
“You don’t have to tell me, though,” She gently grabs your hand before you squeeze your coffee cup past its
breaking point, “but I think there’s someone else you’d rather be here with, no?”
“Huh?” Your eyebrows jump to the top of your forehead as an amused smile dances across her features.
“Oh, you didn’t know that she…” Tzuyu trails off before shaking her head. “It’s not my business, though. You’ve got a great group of friends behind you.”
“Does that still include you?”
“Of course, who else will help you with your history classes?”
You smile before taking another sip from your coffee cup.
Maybe this ‘date’ wasn’t a total failure.
~
You slip through the large crowd of people who have collected in the living room of Gahyeon’s friend’s house. She was out of town for a couple of weeks, right around Halloween, so Gahyeon got permission to do so. The only caveat was that the five of you had to clean up and stay the night to make sure the house was taken care of, but Gahyeon roped everyone into it without much worry.
Without a red solo cup in your hand, you do stand out, but Gahyeon committed to having a dry party that could still be fun without excessive drinking. You had to hand it to her - the set up of the party and the house allowed for all sorts of activities for all sorts of people.
You were in charge of food, so after grabbing another food tray for the spare bedroom, you were trying to make it through the crowd in one piece. While batting stray hands and partiers away, you offer a quick wave to Tzuyu, who stands in the corner by herself.
She joins your side once you break from the crowd, and you make a sharp left as she follows your pace.
“The party’s great.” She says as you knock on the bedroom door.
“You should be thanking Gahyeon. This is all her idea, I just showed up with a few food trays.” You push any praise to Gahyeon, who opens the door with a large smile.
“Thank you!” She snatches the tray from your hands as Tzuyu leans on the doorframe. “You both are welcome to come in - we’ve got plenty of board games to spare!”
“I thought you would’ve been out with the music and partiers, Gahyeon.” You step inside the room before looking back at Tzuyu. “You want in?”
“I think I’ll head back to the living room. Dahyun said she’s challenging someone to a dance-off, and I have money riding on her winning it, so I need to make sure my investment was worth it.”
You laugh to yourself before waving her off.
“Have fun with that, Tzuyu.”
She nods before disappearing back into the hallway.
You turn to look at Gahyeon, who admires you with wide eyes.
“So…?”
“There’s nothing between us, I promise,” You grab a piece of cheese from the tray and toss it in your mouth,
“but it was nice to try to go on a date. I’ve been missing that sort of connection in my life.”
“That’s good-“
“Ah, Yoohyeon, the point of the game is to avoid my property-“ Dongie teases Yoohyeon from the left side of the bed as Yoohyeon folds her arms and huffs.
“Yah, you’re so mean to me!”
“Pay up,” Handong holds out her hand for money, and Yoohyeon reluctantly places the cash in her hand, “now, was that so hard?”
“I don’t like this game,” Yooh pouts before her eyes land on you, “c’mon, we should play a new game so all of us can play together.”
“The five of us can play Monopoly-“ Dami chimes in as Gahyeon sets the tray down on the nightstand.
“-Let’s just play Mario Kart before Yoohyeon owes Handong real money.” You settle the argument by turning
on the Switch as Yoohyeon cheers.
“See, I knew you’d have my back!”
~
Gahyeon and Handong are perched on the bed as you and Yoohyeon sit against the front of the bed. Dami moved her chair closer to the TV so the five of you can play together.
Most of the freeloading partiers have gone home, so there’s no need for the five of you to take shifts to manage the crowd. The only people left are friends of friends who are raiding the last of the snacks and drinks before heading out of the door.
“That was a really successful party, Gahyeon,” You say as the winning animation plays on the screen, “and it looks like everyone who came had a great time.”
Gahyeon smiles brightly before excitedly pulling out her phone.
“I bet the whole party is all over everyone’s socials,” She taps her screen a few times before her eyes widen, “oh shit!”
Your head snaps back, along with Yoohyeon’s, at her exclamation.
Dongie leans over to look at Gahyeon’s phone, and she has a remorseful look on her face.
“Minji was here.”
“Minji was here?” You and Dami say at the same time as Yoohyeon immediately stands up.
“I’m going to go out and chase everyone else off… just in case we have any lurkers.” Malice slips into the last word she speaks as Yoohyeon quickly exits the room.
You want to offer to help, but you don’t think you can face her after everything that has happened with Bora.
“It’s not your fault, you know,” Dami slides off her chair before sitting next to you, “we chose to stand by you when everything happened.”
“You all were friends long before Bora and I got together, and I-“ You pause as tears threaten to fall from your face, “I ruined everything.”
“You ruined nothing,” Dongie reaches towards you and rubs your back for a moment before looking at the phone again, “but I learned that some of my friends weren’t who I thought they were.”
“If I had known…” Gahyeon wistfully says before putting her phone aside, “If I had known that SuA had cheated on you, I would’ve told you right away. The worst part about everything wasn’t hearing it from you - no, we heard it directly from her, and she was proud of what she did.”
Gahyeon sniffles before the waterworks come out, and you find yourself wiping away tears as Handong wraps an arm around her.
“It’s not your fault,” Dami repeats as you lay your head on her shoulder, “I would choose you a thousand times over. I think about how everything played out, sometimes, when I go to sleep, but I don’t regret anything. I met one of the best people in my life after everything that happened, and I couldn’t be more thankful.”
“Minji and Siyeon chose their sides, as we chose ours,” Handong reassures you while holding on to Gahyeon, “and I don’t miss the drama, the fights, and the black-out parties.”
You laugh as you wipe away more tears.
“Those parties were awful,” You reminisce as a memory comes to mind, “I remember having to nearly carry SuA home because she was drunk past the point of walking straight.”
“Forget walking - Siyeon tried to kiss me!” Handong exclaims as you laugh alongside her.
“I do miss them, sometimes,” You softly admit while playing with your shirt sleeve, “and I wonder if things had played out differently, if we’d still be friends.”
“I think those ‘what-ifs’ are better left alone, at least for tonight,” Dami gently wraps her arm around your shoulder as you lean into her body more, “we’ve got plenty of work ahead of us.”
~
“Babe, c’mon! Pictures are fun.” SuA tugged on your sleeve as you fixed your hair in the reflection of your phone screen.
“I don’t look my best, and you always look so much better than I do.” You pull your sleeve away from her before putting your phone away.
“At least you can see what you look like!” SuA yells before stomping off to go meet with the campus photographer.
Confusion mixed with anxiety makes an unholy cocktail, one that’s worse than whatever is in the red solo cup in your hand. You toss the drink to the side of the yard before throwing the cup away as the thought of SuA’s recent uptick in outbursts gnaws at your mind.
Was it you? Did you say something wrong? Your hair and outfit really was a mess from dancing at a crowded party, and you weren’t in the mood to get photographed. Was that such a grievance in your mind?
You probably struck a bad nerve by looking at your phone, considering her lack of reflection, so it would be best if you apologized so you could move on. You wonder how many more times she’ll run off before you stop chasing her.
You shake off the thought, she’s probably just stressed from midterm exams. You push through the crowd of people in the backyard as you head inside the frat house. Before you lost sight of her, she had been heading to the living room to see the photographer that wanted to take a picture of “the happy couple”.
Only if they knew.
You break through the crowd once you’re inside, and a quick glance to the left tells you that you’re not getting through the line of people waiting to use the restroom. You turn to the right, and are met with a frightening display in the living room.
Your girlfriend, the girl you adored from the moment you met her, had her hands and lips all over someone else.
Part of your heart, part of your innocence, and part of your joy shriveled up and died in that moment, but not just because of SuA.
It was watching two of your older friends, the two people you trusted most, watch the scene in front of them unfold as if nothing was wrong. You didn’t scream or cry, not right away. You simply turned back around, pushed through the crowd of people with more force than before, and got a ride home.
A simple text saying “We’re done” and a few blocked phone numbers and social media accounts were enough justice for you, but the world is a karmic bitch who likes to have the last laugh. Before you blocked SuA, she had posted a video of the scene you had just witnessed, with one simple caption:
“For you, my dear.”
~
In a sweat, you pull the blanket off of you and sit up on the air mattress. Gahyeon sleeps peacefully to your left (the girls played rock-paper-scissors for the spot and she won), and Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting over the covers on the bed in their sleep.
After rubbing your eyes and grabbing your phone, you glance over to the cot where Dami was sleeping, only to notice that she was no longer there.
Weird.
Turning on your phone, you blind yourself with the power of a thousand suns before looking at the time.
2:33 a.m., and I went to bed at 1:00 a.m. It’s going to be a long night.
Nightmares came and gone, but they were always supposed to be based in fantasy or fear, not reality.
Having the same scenario play out, over and over again, as if you can change anything that had happened, was maddening.
You would usually call one of your friends when you felt like this, but they were all sleeping peacefully, so you decided to look for the other person who would be awake at this hour. Dami was one of the first asleep most nights, so your calls and texts would go unanswered, but she was always the first to text or call you back if she missed your call.
She had always been a pillar of calm confidence, of self-assured belief in oneself, and you question what had brought you two together during orientation to the university. Perhaps you looked like a duckling who had lost sight of its mother, or perhaps she was just as lost as you. Either way, you had found one another and had been inseparable since.
Dami had been the one to introduce you to her friends, and you had gotten along especially well with SuA. Push comes to shove, one night’s confession turns to love, and the two of you were dating. If you were to be technical, everything that had happened so far was Dami’s fault, in a way.
Guilt buries itself in your consciousness as you shift blame from Dami to yourself. It wasn’t her fault that SuA had acted in such a way. The two of you were fundamentally different people - she liked parties and darkness and temporary pleasure, and you liked quiet afternoons and board game nights with friends and working towards a goal greater than yourself. What had drawn you to each other was tearing your relationship apart - you had nothing in common, but yet again, you had nothing in common.
You’re careful to not blind yourself as you check the time on your phone.
2:34 a.m.
You get out of bed, as quietly as possible, before gently opening the bedroom door. You notice that a light
has been left on towards the direction of the kitchen, so you head that way.
A creak in the floorboards underneath you causes you to pause, as if you’re some sort of horror protagonist. You can imagine how they’d jump and scream, but you were simply worried about waking your friends… right?
You walk much slower as the kitchen starts to come into view. A figure stands by the kitchen island while wringing off their hands with a towel.
“Dami?”
Their head snaps in your direction, and you sigh before slipping your phone in your pocket.
“I’m happy to see you because I can’t seem t-“
When you go into the kitchen, their face is revealed in the light, and a scream threatens to break from your lips.
A disheveled SuA stands in front of you, and she’s covered head-to-toe in blood splatters. When she smiles at you, blood leaks from her lips and drips onto the tile flooring.
As your mouth opens, SuA makes a quick maneuver towards you and pins you to the nearest wall.
“You know,” She gasps for air as she eyes your neck, “we could’ve done this the easy way while you were sleeping.”
“Fuck y-“
Her hand covers your mouth as she bares her teeth and plunges them into your neck. You scream into her mouth, but her strength is no match for yours. You’re sure a dagger in the neck would be more comfortable as she carelessly drinks from you.
You had imagined your death before, but it was nothing like this. You had to fight back, one way or another.
As your vision starts to soften due to blood loss, you scan your surroundings for something to help you. On a table within your grasp, you notice that a wooden spoon used for punch had been haphazardly left there without being cleaned up.
I hope no one can tell the difference between two red liquids…
You manage to grab the spoon before the strength in your body starts to give out. Color and brightness and darkness and nothingness swirl in your vision as you attempt to plunge the dagger into her heart.
The coldness of the floor meets your check, and survival instincts kick in as you slowly crawl away. Your vision dances with the cold lighting as you pull yourself towards the light. A strangled cry escapes you as something grabs onto your leg with crawls tearing into the flesh of your thigh.
You’ve lost your weapon, so you can only assume that it has made contact with SuA or did enough to scare her off. Your eyes adjust to the surroundings as your neck burns with the pain of a hundred bee stings. The grip on your leg loosens as you crawl towards what looks to be a phone.
You hope you can get to the phone before you pass out as a wave of nausea causes you to place your head on the floor.
“Did you hear that scream? I think someone next door had too much to drink-“ Gahyeon’s voice is the last thing you remember before your eyes shut permanently.
~
Heat soaks your body as your eyes open to a light being projected right into your eyes.
“I don’t know how much more I can do… the puncture wounds are too deep.”
A soft hand is placed against your neck as the light is pulled from directly above you to the side.
“You’re awake...” Dongie sits to your side as your head turns the opposite way to look at the rest of your surroundings.
“SuA… she-“
“Don’t worry about SuA, she’s dead.”
Your head snaps towards Handong as your breathing quickens.
“Dead-“
“Why would you say that? You’re going to kill them before they have a chance to make a proper recovery.”
Yoohyeon leans on Handong as you start to see more of what surrounds you.
You’ve been moved from the kitchen to the living room, but time has barely passed. The darkness outside starts to creep in as your vision slowly fades to black.
“We’re losing them-“ Handong cries out as someone else walks toward you.
“Dami!”
You push away the darkness as you immediately prop yourself up on your elbows. Handong supports your back with both of her hands as Yoohyeon places a washcloth against your neck.
“Don’t do that-“ Handong begins to scold you before
“It’s okay,” Dami raises her hand before sitting beside you, “we need them awake.”
“Is this going to work?” Yoohyeon softly asks as your eyes dance around, looking for another person.
“Gahyeon is out looking for Minji, Siyeon, and Tzuyu,” Dami calmly answers as you look back at her, “and I just need you to focus on staying awake. We’ll be okay as long as you’re okay.”
Dami reaches for a book as you focus on your breaths.
Do this one thing for them - it’s easy enough.
You fight against the numbness, the pain inside of you as Dami flips through the book with ease until her hand finds the right page.
“Are binding spells safe?” Yoohyeon asks as Handong scoffs.
“Not in the slightest, but they’re better than resurrection spells.” Handong rubs your back before looking back at Yoohyeon.
“Are you serious? We’re using untamed magic-“
“-Resurrection spells are untamed magic, binding spells are unreliable-“ Dami corrects as Yoohyeon raises her eyebrows in disbelief.
“-you have to be kidding me!”
Your head falls back as your resistance starts to fail.
“Dami, hurry up-“
“-I’ve got it.” Dami takes your spare hand and intertwines it with hers. “Do you trust me?”
“I always have,” You mutter as your eyelids flutter rapidly, “and I always will.”
She glances away for a moment before closing the book and tossing it aside.
Dami mutters something in a tongue unknown to you as a soft purple smoke surrounds the both of you.
“Get away-“ Handong backs off from you as you support yourself with your arms.
“They can’t-“ Yoohyeon argues for a moment before Handong drags her away from you.
The purple smoke grows closer and closer around the two of you until it disappears just as quickly as it
came.
Your resolve cracks and crumbles until nothing inside of you is left to fight.
I should have never introduced the two of you, this wouldn’t have happened if I was more careful-
Dami’s voice rings through your mind as her eyes pierce your soul.
It was never your fault, you answer her with your thoughts, and I’d do it all over again if it means I got to be close with you.
You’re out before your head hits the pillow, but not before a small tear runs down Dami’s cheek.

Everyone feared you.
Whether you wanted them to or not, they feared you. They hated you, even. You killed someone’s child after all. Their sibling, cousin, friend, crush, significant other— Someone who had younger people looking up to them.
You killed a person. People, for that matter.
It was just a game, right?
Games are supposed to be fun. No one was supposed to get hurt in a game.
It wasn’t fun knowing you were taking someone’s life.
It wasn’t fun knowing you were hurting more than one person each time you defended yourself, even if it were you or them.
They had the same goals you did, but only one of you could reach them.
You were the victor in the end.
Another victor with blood on your hands. But hey, you win.
Right?

The ride to the Capitol was unbearably long. You remembered how it felt to ride in the train for the first time after the reaping. How you volunteered for your friend that you don’t see much anymore. The last time you felt alive and not like some monster that ruined other people’s lives.
You were the Capitol’s favorite though.
“Don’t mope around. We have guests.” Tzuyu nudged you. You sat up straight, rolling your shoulders back.
Your expression didn’t change, but you weren’t zoned out and staring outside.
“Do you want me to be happy for them?”
Tzuyu smiled at the tributes before giving you a threatening glare.
“Next car. Now.” She said through gritted teeth.
You got up without a word and followed her into the next car.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t intend to come off as rude.” You apologized right away when the door closed.
“You did. They are already scared, the least you can do is smile for them and help them become more comfortable. Would it really kill you to try?” Tzuyu kept her tone low enough to where you could hear but the tributes couldn’t.
“You’re their mentor now! No body ever survives with a pessimistic mentor.”
“No body survives with an optimistic one either.” You retorted. Tzuyu sighed, shaking her head.
“Please, just try. For them? They need your help more than ever. No body asks for this.”
“Careers.” You mumbled, earning another glare.
Tzuyu glanced through the window of the door, seeing the two tributes sitting and actively avoiding each other. You remembered how you were when you were in their shoes.
Avoiding the other tribute, knowing it would come down to you or them in the end. Even though you had long forgotten the name of the other person you were reaped with, it still wrenched your heart to remember there had been another person with you.
“Tzuyu. Only one of them can survive.” You reminded. Tzuyu acknowledged with a frown.
“I will try my best. Can’t believe they are making me raise murderers.” You mumbled the last bit, walking back into the other car with the tributes.
They both looked at you and Tzuyu. You smiled for them, even if it was forced.
“I apologize for being rude. How are you two holding up?” You asked them, trying to sound as sincere as possible. Tzuyu furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
“Why do you sound like that?” She asked.
“What?”
“Like a… Servant— You sound very fake.”
“No I don’t.” You defended yourself with a scoff, glancing at the two tributes.
“Yes. Yes, you do.”
“Do I sound fake?” You asked the two tributes. They seemed confused on whether they wanted to nod or shake their heads.
Yubin stood up, avoiding your question all together and held her hand up for you to shake.
“I’m Yubin.”
There was something about her that interested you. It wasn't just how gorgeous she was either.
At the Capitol, you couldn't focus on much. All you could think about was Yubin.
A silly little crush, some might say.
It even went as far as forgetting you were the mentor. Not Tzuyu, who at times had to speak for you after so many tries of getting you to focus.
It was your first year as a mentor, after all. You were still the Capitol’s favorite shell of a person.
“What if the Career’s try to recruit you? What would you do?” Tzuyu asked the tributes. You realized you never got the other tribute’s name.
It was only Yubin. Yubin. Yubin.
It was already too late to ask for the other tribute’s name.
Too awkward.
You put your drink down.
“Don’t get close to anyone. You’ll only feel betrayed.”
Tzuyu cleared her throat, “hate to admit it, but it’s true. There will only be one survivor. If it’s not one of you, it’ll be a career you trusted.”
▾
“Anything you want to say to them before they go into training?” Tzuyu asked, crossing her arms. You smiled at them.
“Good luck.”
Tzuyu lightly slapped your arms. You sighed.
“Work on what you know you’re good at. Don’t bother learning new stuff until you’ve perfected what you know.” You advised more seriously.
“Yubin, you’re smart. If I were you, I’d focus on your familiarity with plants, the terrain, survival skills. The difference between a mound and a mine.”
You looked at the other tribute, who seemed surprised you were actually being a mentor.
“And you… Er…” You admit, you felt bad for never learning his name.
“Taehyun.” Tzuyu whispered to you. You awkwardly smiled.
“Taehyun. You’re good with knives. Focus on that.”
“Ah, so you do know something about me.” Taehyun joked. You crossed your arms.
“You are forgetting something though.” He added. You raised your eyebrows, waiting for him to continue.
“I’m good at being invisible.”
You weren't sure if he was just joking to make fun of you for only focusing on Yubin or if he was serious.
“Taehyun, I'm so sorry. I don't usually—”
“I'm serious. I’ve won every game of hide and seek I’ve played.” Taehyun proudly stated.
“Knives and camouflage. Good. Awesome. You two know what to focus on now.” You looked at the two, feeling a sense of pride for getting stuck with the smart tributes and not the reckless ones.
When they left you and Tzuyu waited.
More waiting.
“You did good. Sort of.”
“Sort of?” You questioned, slightly offended. Tzuyu put her hand on your shoulder.
“I’m disappointed that you only remembered one of their names.”
You groaned, sitting down, “do you want me to write Taehyun’s name five hundred times to make sure I remember it next time?”
“That’s not a bad idea.” Tzuyu sat beside you. You threw your head back, staring at the ceiling above you.
“Do you like Yubin?”
“What do you mean?”
Tzuyu narrowed her eyes at you, “you know what I mean. I see the way you look at her when she’s talking or doing anything. I saw the way you froze when she shook your hand. I have never seen you exhibit this kind of behavior before.”
“Is it really out of character to have a crush?” You closed your eyes. Tzuyu smiled a little.
“It’s… How do I put this… Unrequited.”
You opened your eyes again, still staring at the ceiling in such a neck breaking position.
Unrequited seemed to fit. Yubin was a tribute.
She had a one out of twenty-four chance of survival. Even after, a kind-hearted person like Yubin wouldn’t be the same after if she won.
You sure as hell weren’t.
▾
You, Yubin, Taehyun, and Tzuyu sat around the TV waiting for their scores. You pretty much tuned out every other tributes scores from other districts, knowing they’d most likely be average or poor while the careers had the highest.
It was always like that.
You were in the poor range, as hard as it was the believe. A score of three.
So how did you manage to survive?
You were just a person, killing to survive. Dying to live.
“Oh! Pay attention!” Tzuyu excitedly smacked your arm. Yubin chuckled, inching her hand towards yours as Taehyun’s score were first.
You absentmindedly curled your fingers around Yubin’s hand.
Nine.
“Holy shit.”
“Language.” Tzuyu scolded, although she was impressed. Taehyun even seemed surprised.
“Good job, er… What is your name again?” You joked. Taehyun threw a grape at you.
“Very funny.” Taehyun looked back at the screen as Yubin came up.
You were now consciously aware that Yubin was holding your hand. Whether she intended it or not, she squeezed your hand in anticipation.
Eleven.
“Holy shit.” Tzuyu muttered under her breath.
“Sorry.” She immediately apologized. You grinned, “did I hear you correctly?”
“Quiet.”
Yubin’s eyes were glued to the TV in shock, wondering how her smarts got that high of a score.
“You got an eleven. Do you know who the last person to get an eleven was?” You asked Yubin, placing your other hand over hers.
“No, was it you?” Yubin asked while her score registered.
“Absolutely… not.” You had a huge smile on your face. “I got a three.”
Yubin scoffed at your response.
“I got a nine.” Taehyun reminded. You gave him a thumbs up.
“I can hack into the system and make it higher—”
“Hey!” Tzuyu slapped your arm. “Don’t say that out loud. Are you trying to get us raided by peacekeepers?”
You cleared your throat and looked at Taehyun again, whispering this time.
“I can hack into the system and make it higher.”
▾
It was the night before the games and your chest felt heavy, knowing your new friends— as well as your budding romance with Yubin— would be coming to an end sooner than you were ready.
You almost forgot that you were raising murderers despite the countless times Tzuyu reminded you.
“Well, I’m headed off to sleep. Goodnight.” Taehyun was the first to leave for the night. Assuming he just wanted to get it all over with.
Tzuyu was next, although she seemed on edge about how tomorrow would turn out.
Then there were two. You and Yubin.
Yubin stood on the balcony, overlooking the Capitol.
“Hey there, eleven.”
Yubin smiled, already knowing who you were without looking back.
“Hey, three.”
You couldn’t help but laugh, “okay, well this three still survived.”
Yubin laughed half-heartedly and you could tell something was wrong.
Probably the fact she’ll need to fight for her life in an arena of other tributes doing the same.
“What was it like for you? In your games?”
Your smile faded slowly and the pain you’ve held inside became more prominent. You tried so hard to push the memories away despite them being everywhere.
“Full story or a summary?” You slowly joined her, leaning against the railing of the balcony with her,
“You pick.”
You took a deep breath, forcing yourself to recall the memories for Yubin’s sake.
“My name wasn’t called during the reaping. My friend was supposed to be there. But she panicked when she had to go up on stage and I volunteered on a whim.”
Yubin listened to everything you said, admiring your bravery.
“So you do care about people.” Yubin slightly smirked. You lightly nudged her.
“Of course I do. I wasn’t good with most skills others possessed. That’s why I got a three. In the arena, I was terrified and even… I don’t know. I wish I could go back and tell myself to not be so reckless.” You frowned.
“You lived because you were reckless. If I live, it’s because I was the opposite.” Yubin rubbed her hands together. You thought about what she said.
Would you have died if you were more cautious?
“I’m not afraid of dying,” Yubin turned to face you. She grabbed your shoulders to force you to face her as well.
“I’m afraid of losing who I am.”
She smiled at you, but it was sympathetic.
“It’s not too late to find yourself. I loved the moments when I could see the real you coming out. I hope you can learn to forgive yourself for something you were forced to do.”
With that sentence leaving you in a state of shock that gutted you, you stood there, silent as the tears welled up in your eyes.
“I know you’re rooting for me. I’m rooting for you too.” Yubin whispered, kissing your cheek before walking away.
“Goodnight.”
▾
You were coming to terms with everything. Your past and what Yubin said to you that night.
You watched the cornucopia on a screen with Tzuyu.
When everyone ran off of their podiums, Taehyun and Yubin ran their separate ways in the chaos.
Yubin was immediately chased by a group of four careers.
The careers sought her out, knowing they would be unable to recruit her before the games. She knew her score was too high as she ran through the forests. You knew her score was too high.
If they didn’t recruit her, they’d have to target her first.
“Don’t get close to anyone. You’ll only feel betrayed.”
Yubin slid down a slope and into a river, screaming before she was submerged under the water.
You watched, some how determined that she would survive.
And she did, quickly getting up and splashing to the other side as the careers watched her from the slope she slid down.
You smiled a genuine smile knowing they hadn’t got her yet.
Yubin hid on higher ground, using her wits to guide her. Luckily, no one found her or even came to that part of the arena.
She had to be careful about the borders too, knowing what to watch out for.
Yubin spent her first night alone, exhausted and watching each picture of the fallen tributes in the sky.
None of whom she’s met before.
As the days went by, Yubin was alone. No sign of other tributes— Other than the fallen ones that appeared in the sky after the cannon shots.
There were four tributes left, including Yubin.
You watched the screen carefully, supplying her with a parachute that contained food so she wouldn’t have to risk running into one of the other tributes.
Yubin watched as the parachute made it’s way to her, catching it. Yubin looked up at the sky, mouthing a desperate ‘thank you.’
That night, only one tribute died.
It was now Yubin, Taehyun, and a career from District 2.
The next day, the cornucopia was announced to be replenished with food, water, weapons— The essentials.
You knew it was the gamemaker’s way of getting the three together. The ones left knew where the cornucopia was and that they may need the supplies.
Yubin knew how to forage for food. She knew how to purify the water.
But it was growing difficult to find food that wouldn’t kill her or poison her.
It was difficult purifying water she didn’t have the tools for.
So Yubin made her way back to the cornucopia.
So did Taehyun and so did the career from District 2.
You and Tzuyu anxiously watched, although glad someone from your district made it this far— Let alone both of them.
That just made it all the more harder to watch.
The three tributes standing stared at each other, eyeing each other’s movements.
Yubin didn’t want to fight. She was probably the only tribute that hadn’t killed anyone.
Taehyun lost every knife he had over the past few days.
The career seemed the most ready to fight than the other two.
The standoff dragged out for an unnecessarily long time.
“Fuck.” You muttered. Tzuyu glanced at you with curiosity.
In an attempt to help out, you sent the one thing you saved as an absolute last resort. Your secret.
Watching the small parachute floating down towards Yubin, Taehyun, and the career didn’t make it any less tense.
“I don't want to die.” Yubin declared, all of her fear and sorrow building up inside of her.
The parachute landed in between them, and on instinct, Yubin stepped backwards. Taehyun glanced at Yubin, taking a step back also as the career stepped closer to the parachute.
“I don’t want to die.” She repeated with tears welling into her eyes.
She was telling the truth in the words she spoke. You’ve seen it all before because you were there once too. You didn’t want to die when you were in the arena. Why else would you have fought that hard?
“I’m not afraid of dying.”
The truth hurts.
“I’m afraid of losing who I am.”
But secrets kill.

THE EMOTIONS, THE SCENERY, the woman-
I'm a simp.
"She's a killer in this"
Okay. And? Red flag, sure, but I'm colorblind. (Not really, I'm just quoting a meme!)
As a lover of horror, I'm so happy that I was able to inspire this. It's well written and had my heart racing from the tension you were able to bring with your story telling.
My heart is also racing because of the picture you used 🫠🫠🫠 She is SO fine 🥵😭
You really don't disappoint with these though! I just know I'm gonna be thinking about this all week now 😌🙏
please write more of sua i'm on my knees..
SuA ~ One Call Away (But You Never Pick Up)
A/N: I've got you, babes! Sorry for the wait - I've been pretty exhausted, but I'm doing well now. 🫶 Here's a little drabble about an idea that I've had about a Halloween fic, but I didn't want to write the full idea due to multiple constraints like time and laziness 🫣 It's not on the schedule, but I wanna empty my asks and I like asks like this 🥹🫶 Also, @ghastlybin helped inspired me to write this, so go give them some love. ❤️
TW: Horror themes, gruesome deaths, explicit descriptions of broken limbs, killer! SuA, if you get the horror movie references, have a cookie on me 🍪
♡ Masterlist ♡
Silence.
Pure and utter silence.
Blood drips down her clothing - it's not her own.
Not yours either.
The phone in your hand - it's damning evidence.
It wasn't her voice through the filters - she's got an accomplice.
But who?
You miss the simpler times - when school was easy, when your best friend wasn't hanging dead in her partner's garage, and when your girlfriend wasn't looking at you like a freshly cooked piece of steak, free for the cutting and slicing.
The red-stained knife in her hand, the black cloak cover her frame, and the ghastly, quite literally ghastly, mask in her hands. The horrified face on the mask covers your current range of emotions, but you can't be scared now.
Not when there's two killers on the loose, in the house, in the kitchen, right in front of you.
Not when the dead loom over your shoulders, their deaths needing poetic justice in the form of vengeance, but you can't hurt the one you love.
But that's not SuA anymore - not the girl spitting hurtful words about your mother, you, your best friend, and everyone you ever loved but her.
She charges.
You step aside as the second-floor window behind you is revealed.
She's through the window, not a moment later.
You don't need to see the knife tearing through her skin, the twisted limbs, or the blood pooling in the garden by her body.
The way your heart aches, the feeling of guilt on your shoulders - you know she's gone.
You can't linger - someone else is out there. Is it JiU, the kind mother figure, Siyeon, SuA's loyal best friend, or some other evil force?
You need to keep moving. You can't spare a glance at SuA, but you do.
The sight of witnessing her eyelids flutter and her limbs twitch one last time will forever be sketched into your memory.
I have to keep moving.

HI HI HI I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! THANK YOU HEHEHE I think it captured the vibes and theme perfectly, and I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it but the ending!!!! I'm about to scream- If there's anything I know, it's that Katie will not disappoint c: 🫶🥹
And the fact that the Y/N is the one who designed the weapon, gave me chills fr.
"Public execution" god damn, the adrenaline this caused. Idk if that's the correct wording BUT let's go with it 🫣😂
I especially love how well each character was written in this, I could hear their voices during the dialogue bits and the world building too, I would love to read more on this concept/storyline because this was amazing 🥰 Thank you for writing this and also for the birthday wishes. This is so sweet of you 🥺🫶 ily and thank you again 💜💜💜
a question of morality, or a test of loyalty?
A/N: Hi guys, girls, and non-binary pearls! This was written as a birthday present for @ghastlybin , so happy birthday to a wonderful friend and fellow clown. ❤️ Also, this was heavily inspired by the works of @kingmaker-a (you can probably spot the references and thank you to King and @neon-city-dreams for fielding my questions since this fic was a bit out of my wieldhouse)
TW: ACAB and anti-capitalism themes, betrayal, alcohol, food and drink mentions, OOC SuA, a surprise guest at the end :)
Summary: One wrong turn can change your life forever. Some, like SuA, are resistant to change, while others are at the forefront of it all. Where will you lie after everything in your life changes?
♡ Masterlist ♡
"Hey, Geek Squad, over here!"
SuA waves you over with what surely is a weapon in her hand.
"What did you do this time?"
Your lab coat freely flows behind you as you walk towards SuA with haste.
"I think you mean 'What did we do?'" A smirk lies on SuA's face, and the tamed wilderness that rests in her brown eyes should tell you that nothing but trouble is on the horizon. "Watch this!"
With a simple click, the cylindrical object in her hand comes to life. It emits a deep violet color before SuA begins swinging it around. You duck before she swings the object over your head.
"What are you trying to do, behead me?"
She bursts out into a fit of laughter before turning it off.
"No, it doesn't have the capability to do that, but you may have given me an idea for my next project."
"C’mon, be serious. What is this thing for?" You gesture to the object that SuA tosses in the air carelessly before catching it.
"It's a zoning device. The superior asked me to work on it since you haven't had any great ideas as of late."
Your eyes widen as you fold your arms.
"Genius takes time-"
"Genius takes time -" SuA imitates you with a high-pitched voice as you sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose.
"You're acting like a child-"
"You're acting like a child!" She imitates you again, but this time, she uses a deep voice.
"I hate you."
"I love you~"
"That's not what I said." You matter-of-factly say as she lightly pushes against you.
"Well, that's what I heard." She smirks, again, before grabbing onto your arm.
You do your best to hide the shyness on your face as you lead her back to the lab.
"Speaking of genius-"
"Speaking of genius-" SuA bursts out laughing before squeezing your arm. "Okay, I'm done, you can continue on."
"Remember that car design that wouldn't work due to the spring constant-"
"Oh, here we go with the math stuff-"
"It's Physics, Sua," You're quick to correct her, "but I managed to fix it, and I should have the plans for you by tomorrow so you can start building."
"Look at you go, Calculator Watch!"
"You're so mean to me." You joke before poking her sides.
She screams and you flinch before breaking away from her.
"Don't do that! I'm sensitive." She crosses her arms in front of her chest in defiance, but the soft smile on her face tells you that she knows you're joking around. "Are you going to get drinks with me tonight?"
"I've got to change first, but yeah, I'll come." You adjust your lab coat before grabbing your ID from its protector. "Same place as usual?"
"Yup," She nods as you place your ID in front of the scanner, "and I don't think you need to change. You make the lab coat look hot, if I'm being honest."
A bit of red dusts your cheeks as the light in front of the scanner turns from green to red.
"Thanks." You mumble before waving her on. "Let's get this done so we can get those drinks, huh?"
"Now you're speaking my language!"
~
Living in the city had numerous benefits, and one of which was the fact that you could walk from your workplace to home and then back again. You liked taking the scenic route home as you could admire the delicate, dainty work that the city gardeners had created in the small gardens that dusted the sidewalks.
You liked taking the 'good' way home, or at least, that was the name that your co-workers gave it. They didn't like to go through the regular parts of the city due to the high crime rates, so they stuck to their same-old ways. You weren't against the poor and out-of-luck, but safety was a real concern for you, so you take the routine way home every day.
Today, however, was not your lucky day as there happened to be unavoidable construction work on both your regular and alternate route home. That meant that you would have to take the back alleys home, and although you weren't fond of the idea, you didn't want to be late to meet SuA.
Arming yourself with one of your homemade projects, a knife-like object that would send the victim to sleep once it penetrated the skin, you carefully walk through the alleys as you keep your head up. Awareness was a key tool in surviving in the city, especially if you weren't rich or happened to be in the wrong area at the wrong time.
The walk home was nerve-wracking but mostly peaceful. A few stragglers gave you some strange looks, and you couldn't blame them. Your pristine clothes and pure white lab coat must've looked strange next to a worn-down building covered in graffiti. You paid them no mind, and to the stranger that went too close, you flashed your weapon which caused them to quickly back away.
Everything was peaceful, and you felt yourself relax as your apartment building came into sight. Since you were on a main walkway, there were armed guards everywhere, which caused you to slip your weapon back into your pockets. Your quickened steps turned into a relaxed stroll as you tried to find your keys in your pocket.
After giving yourself a quick pat-down, you find the keys in your left pants pocket. You fish them out as you approach the building.
You're stopped by a crowd of people who are talking among themselves. You try to navigate around them, but the crowd's density causes you to reconsider. You'll be heading into the street if you want to do that, and considering how fast most cars go, you choose to stay off the roads.
You shoot SuA a quick text saying that you'll be late, and you slip your phone back into your pocket as you try to weave through the crowd. You stop dead in your tracks when a piercing scream breaks through the hustle and bustle of the city.
With that, the crowd breaks as people go running in different directions. You're left confused until you look to your right.
A girl who couldn't be older than fifteen is shoved against a wall by a couple of guards. She wails again, but they pay her no mind. One guard looks at the other for a moment before pulling out a skinny blue metal rod. You gasp when it illuminates blue after the guard turns it on.
The girl screams and thrashes against the guards, but you're unable to help her. Interfering in the business of the guards in a serious offense, and you don't need that sort of thing on your record.
Besides, if you did rescue her, what would you say?
"Oh, you see that torture device in that guards hand? Funny story, actually, since I'm the one who designed it."
~
Conflicting opinions battle in your mind as you unlock the door to your apartment.
Should you have intervened, even if it meant your own demise? Would it mean anything if you did? Would those above forgive you for the transgressions against society?
You carelessly throw your lab coat on a nearby coat hanger as you nervously pull at a strand of hair from your head.
That image is scorned into your memory, and you know that you can’t go back to work and continue to do what you did every other day before. The thought of it makes you nauseous, but the question remains to be answered.
What are you going to do next?
You try to pick an outfit in peace, and you’re successful for a moment before another wave of guilt crashes over you.
That little girl could’ve grown up to be something great… god-knows-where she is now, or if she’s still alive.
Still alive, you hope as you get dressed, please be alive.
You have to hope she’s alive. Otherwise, the guilt would eat you alive.
~
“Hey, you made it!” SuA roughly pats your back before rubbing your arm. “You look nice, all dressed up like that.”
You nod and bite your lip before ordering a drink.
“You alright?” SuA tugs at your arm as you sit next to her. “I know you’re quiet and withdrawn at times… but this is strange for you.”
“I have a lot on my mind.” You confess as you thank the bartender for giving you a drink.
“Like what?”
“I wouldn’t want to trouble you.” You shake your head as the thoughts come to the front of your mind.
“I worry about you.” Her voice softens, along with her mannerisms. “You can tell me, you know.”
“If I do… you won’t judge me for what I say, right?”
“Not unless you say something stupid.” She shoves you with her shoulder before grabbing your hand. “I’m all ears.”
So you tell her everything.
Everything about what you say. Everything that you had thought in the past hour. Everything, everything, e v e r y t h i n g.
When you finish, SuA quickly hushes you before speaking in a low tone.
“You can’t- you can’t do anything about that girl-”
“That won’t help me sleep at night.” You mummer back. “What do you think?”
“I… You need to move on.”
“SuA, I… I can’t.”
“I know.”
“So?” You softly say.
“So.”
“You can’t… you can’t just say that!” You exasperatedly say. “You need to tell me something.”
“What do you want me to say?” SuA asks with a bit of anger in her voice.
“I need you to tell me anything, SuA, I need you to tell me it’s alright.”
“You’re an adult. You can comfort yourself.”
“I need you to be on my side because I love you!” You raise your voice a moment before lowering it again. “I can’t stand the thought that you believe in these… sick, twisted ideas that this company, this city, this world promotes!”
“You love me?” SuA softens further before embracing you. “I’m sorry that I never said anything before.”
“What do we do now? How do we move forward?”
“I think that’s a question that can be answered after a few more rounds of alcohol.” SuA suggests before pulling away from you.
“Oh… okay.”
“Hey.”
“Hey?” You tilt your head at her.
“I love you too, you nerd.”
~
It was a dangerous plan.
It was a bad plan.
But it was your only option at the moment.
You and SuA would go into work tomorrow like nothing was wrong. During the shift, however, the two of you would be destroying any of your work that could pose a threat. After that, you’d wipe SuA and yourself from the computer system so you’d be completely untraceable. Then, after you had called in a favor from an old friend, you had a couple of electric motorcycles that would get you out of the city before anyone knew anything was wrong.
It was, most definitely, a horrible plan. One error could end with the both of you dead.
It was your only chance to right a wrong, and your chance to escape this nightmare with SuA, so it had to be a good plan that went well.
At least, that’s what you told yourself as you got dressed this morning. After combing your hair into place, you grab your lab coat and head to work.
One last day, you tell yourself, and the rest of your life can be spent doing something good for once.
~
You offer SuA a gentle nod as you clock in with your idea. She smirks before poking your side with her elbow.
“Why so gloomy?”
“I’m trying not to be.” You mumble before walking in the lab. “I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah, I’ll see you soon.”
Brief greetings between the two of you were rare, but you had to hope that none of your co-workers thought that anything was wrong. Luckily, no one paid either of you any mind as you slipped into the lab.
You offer a glance backward as you see SuA walk towards the workshop with a phone in hand.
She’ll be fine, you know it. SuA’s a burning fire that’ll do whatever it takes to survive.
You just have to hope that your own resolve can last through an entire shift.
~
The day goes smoothly, to your surprise. In between working on a comfort project for one of the rich families, you’re able to delete or modify most of your work that would’ve led to the development of weapons or something worse.
As you stare at the weapons in front of you, you can’t help but wonder why you didn’t see this before. Was it the money that blinded you, or were you truly ignorant and resigned to what the people above you were doing?
It didn’t matter because you were going to be done with this life in an hour.
An hour. 60 minutes. 3600 seconds.
Yet the time crawls by at any agonizing pace.
One hour.
~
You look at the clock in front of you before pulling your flash drive from the device in front of you.
Three minutes.
Three minutes left, and all of you had to do was remove this flash drive from the premises. Maybe you could take it with you and try to amend the war crimes that you had committed by association, or-
The sound of your boss calling your name causes the hair on your arms to shoot up. You discreetly put the flash drive in your pants pocket before turning around.
“Yes?”
“Did you delete all of your work?”
“I-” Shit. “It was an accident.”
“Liar.”
They step aside to reveal SuA behind them.
Your mind races through a million possible explanations before landing on the one that hurts the most.
SuA betrayed you.
She mouths an ‘I’m sorry’, but you’re too blindsided by her actions to say anything.
She did this? After everything she said last night?
“You can hand over the files, and I’m willing to let this go due to your history of good behavior.” Your boss says as they extend a hand out.
You sigh before fishing the flash drive out of your pocket.
“Good, now just hand it to me-”
You hesitate before gripping onto the flash drive.
Could I really live with myself if I did something like this?
You drop the flash drive on the ground before stomping on it with your foot.
You hear SuA gasp as you dryly laugh.
“Whoops.”
“Seize them!”
~
Public execution.
You knew that was the fate that was destined for you before it came from the judge’s mouth. You had committed treason against one of the biggest companies in the city, which basically meant that you had committed treason against the whole city.
You didn’t really care, though. The one person you actually cared about turned you in, and for what gain?
You thought SuA was honorable, kind, funny, and respectful. There were many nights where you had dreamed of being something more with her. Now, she was repulsive to you. Everything that you had adored about SuA became something that you cursed at. You were so, so wrong about her.
You, however, were right about SuA in one respect: She would do whatever it took to survive.
The guard stationed at your door had told you that SuA wanted to come and see you, but you refused.
Why would you want to see someone who doomed you to death?
Well, you did that part yourself, but it still hurts.
You were numb, so death didn’t seem so bad.
Three days. 72 hours. 4320 minutes. 259,000 seconds.
The amount of time that you had left to rot in this cell before you died.
~
You had stopped eating a day ago after you found out SuA was paying the jail to provide you with meals that you liked.
You’d do anything to spite her at this point. You knew that she couldn’t handle the fact that your blood would be on her hands, so you’d relish in the thought of making her waking hours as torturous as possible.
You trusted her.
You had the two weeks before your sentencing to mourn the loss of that relationship.
In the place of cold, wet tears and lonely nights were fiery anger and bitter words, but you knew that you couldn’t say any of it to SuA.
She’d apologize, you’d apologize, and she’d get the closure she needed.
So you wouldn’t let her get close. If you had to be punished, then so did she.
~
The guard in front of you knocks to signal meal time.
“I’m not hungry. You should already know that.”
When they look at you, you realize that this guard isn’t the same one that you’ve had.
“Sorry,” You grumble before hugging your knees close to your chest, “you must be new.”
“Well, I’d be new if I was a guard in the first place.”
“Huh?”
You quickly stand as the guard tosses their hat to the side. Light purple waves of hair fall down her shoulders.
“Who are you?”
“We’re impressed with your efforts, Scientist Zero.” She smiles before fishing keys out of her pocket. “You’re coming with me if I didn’t make it obvious already.”
“What do you want with me? A private execution?” You bitterly spit as she offers you her hand.
“You can sit and rot in this jail if you want, but I think you have some amends to make, right?”
“How do you know so much about-”
“Do you want to come with me or not?” She offers you an ultimatum, and you sigh before cautiously taking her hand.
“I’m choosing to trust you in the hopes that you don’t stab me in the back.”
“I’d never dream of it.” She jokes, and the laughter squeezes the vulnerable part of your heart.
“I need a name before I fully put my life in your hands.”
“Lee Gahyeon.” She answers before pulling you to the side.
Another person, dressed in similar prison wear, takes your place in the cell before Gahyeon closes the gate.
“Don’t tell me they’re going to-”
“We do what we have to.” Gahyeon darkly answers. “A lot of people have faith in you, including myself, Zero. Is it alright if I call you Zero?”
You pause as you think back to the names you’ve been called before.
Geek Squad, Calculator Watch, Nerd.
“I’ve been called worse, believe me.”
