The internship that began it all
This will be my last blog over my amazing experience at my internship. My final time at my internship my instructor went over the specifics I will need to know when I further pursue my career whether it be in radio or sports broadcasting. He taught me that no matter what I end up doing it is always important to get the build relationships, and check the facts so that everything I put on paper is backed up with first- hand sources. Kale Steed has become more of a mentor than just an instructor, he has guided me and helped me when I didn't fully understand how the process worked.

Moments to remember
While at my internship this year I have been able to grasp a different outlook on the extensive process that a sports reporter and broadcaster have to go through to prepare for a story. This experience is definitely one to remember. I’ve gotten to meet a great number of people that without this internship I would have probably never met, such as former Amarillo Globe-News sports editor Lance Lahnert. The Hall of Famer, who is now doing a daily sports talk radio show. Also, Sam Levitt,  the broadcaster for the Amarillo Sod poodles. This internship allowed me to open doors for the future.

It speaks for itself
This week we focused on the upcoming playoff game with Abernathy High School and Canadian This is a highlight to me personally because this game will be held in the buffalo's stadium, which will be the first ever playoff game out new Buffaloes Stadium. Kale informed me that this will be Canadian’s  seventh straight appearance in the state quarterfinals with head coach Chris Koetting. When learning about Koetting and his Wildcat team, I found out Koetting has collected 36 playoff wins in only 10 seasons.

He knows how!!!
On Tuesday I went with my instructor Kale Steed to Tascosa High School to visit with head football coach Ken Plunk. I was able to get the chance to see how kale conducted himself during an interview. The questions he asked were straight to the point. He only asked questions that benefited his story the most. One thing I like about Kale is his great repore with coach Plunk. I’ve noticed through Kale that building relationships in this business is half as important as getting the story. Kale asked Plunk to talk about his very impressive career, one of the things that stood out to me was that he has won seven playoff games in the past two years, which for those of you who are not aware of what that means, that type of record is very impressive.

Kale Steed showed me the day to day of what all a media people go through
This internship is showing me how media personnel go through the process of collecting their information which is mainly through hands on work. There is more to it than being on TV, having your name printed for an article or being on the radio. The hours of work to make sure that the local media is giving the best information possible is mind blowing, and gave me a new perspective. I personally have experienced the timeliness it takes a sports journalist to tell a thorough story and provide the best experience for the reader.
I’ve seen how Lance Lahnert preps for his daily radio show, “The Sports Drive”, and all that goes into it.
My goal for this internship is to be able to compose myself in face to face interviews as well as over the phone interviews. With the guidance of my instructor, I will be able to reach my goal but also gain an insight that I wouldn't have expected to gain.

Amarillo ISD press conferences
I was required to attend a few weekly press conference at Golden Corral hosted on Wednesday by Amarillo ISD. The school district served the media free lunch, what a perk, and made all four football coaches from Amarillo High, Tascosa, Caprock and Palo Duro, available for open questions about its upcoming game.

Amarillo High and Abilene Cooper
I went to the District 2-5A Division I showdown between Amarillo High and Abilene Cooper. The Sandies gave Abilene Cooper its first loss all season, 49-36,  to win the district title. My internship project was to take down the play by details of the game. If you don’t know what play by play is i’ll tell you, play-by-play is the process of recording through either writing or voice recording. Luckily, this game was an exciting finish for play-by-play. Amarillo High converted two late third downs to score that put them up 14 with four minutes to go.

Tascosa and Frenship playoff game
On 11/7/19 I was able to attend the Tascosa vs Frenship district game. This was the final game of the regular season for the two teams. It was a chilly night, but that didn’t stop Tascosa from beating Frenship, 36-23,  to clinch a home playoff game for 11/14/19. I was able to watch the game from the pressbox and the field. I followed my instructor Kale Steed, and took down everything he found to be important about the game.
He wanted me to come up with some questions I’d ask Tascosa coach Ken Plunk following the win. One of my questions was “coach what was the atmosphere around practice this week”? “How did you as a coach address the importance of this week's opponent”?

“The Sports Drive”
Blog over Lance lanheart
I recently had the opportunity to join former Amarillo Globe-News sports editor Lance Lanheart on his daily radio show “The Sports Drive”, which is located in Amarillo, Tx. Lance allowed me and my instructor Kale Steed to be guest’s during a sports segment. The experience gave me a better grasp with interviewing and responsiveness.
I focused my questions on Lance and distinguished career:
Where did you start?
How long have you been in this profession?
What is the difference between 1981 to 2019?
How have you seen the media change?
Lance was with AGN for 37 years. The biggest difference he saw from 1981 to today was the time a journalist had to write a story, or do a television package.  As Lance says, everything was on “snail mail time”, meaning a journalist had a full day to work on one story, unlike today where a journalist is asked to do multiple tasks. With the fast moving world of social media there is an immediate response to get a story out as quickly as possible.
Lance mentioned a story from when he was younger, talking about a time he wrote an article over a girls basketball game and a boys basketball game.
Lance wrote heavy on the boys game while barely mentioning the girls. He even said he saw so little on the girls he saw it fit to say girls basketball was boring at that time. Responses were so slow then he’d wait on phone calls and mail to see what people said about his statement, good or bad.
One thing Lance never feared was putting his opinion out there for the public to see. It’s part of the job. The public is always curious when it comes to what the local media has to say. Lance still voices his opinion proudly on his daily talk show, and it’s a reason he’s been loved by the Texas Panhandle for three decades.

Final Internship Blog
This will be my blog as regarding my Town square media internship. This internship was an experience like nun other, through this internship I now have countless knowledge of digital marketing as well as the preparation process for putting content on the radio. For example, I was able to shadow over a KIZZFM Dj. I got to see his processes and how he set up his Special segments on air, which when it is my turn to pursue my career I can use that open mindedness when it comes reaching the preferred audience I wish to reach. I want to thank One of my mentors Shannon Lewis the Digital Managing Editor for creating the strong program for other interns to progress in this field as well.

Internship Update
A big project my instructor had me do dealt with the upcoming scavenger hunt.
The winners of this scavenger hunt received tickets to “Six Flags”
My job on the project was to spot the coordinates using longitude and latitude in all types of locations in Amarillo and I recorded the coordinates on a document for my instructor to put on the station so the search can begin.

week 1 of interning at Townsquare Media
Week one of my Internship at Townsquare Media was a bit of a shell shock. The information they told me was brand to an extent but through everything we covered we took it step by step. A big tool to life we began this week and that was the “Intro to Google Marketing” this tool will help with understanding the fundamentals of e-commerce and learn how to market brand names online.
