A car bomb has exploded in the Turkish capital Ankara, killing 32 people and wounding more than 100, the health ministry has said. Unofficially, the death toll is expected to be as high as 175.
The explosion happened in Guven Park in the Kizilay district, a key transport hub and commercial area. For comparison purposes – it’s like a bomb going off in Piccadilly Circus.
Last month, an attack on a military convoy in Ankara killed 28 people and wounded dozens more. Last October, more than 100 people were killed in a double-suicide bombing at a Kurdish peace rally in Ankara. Ankara, Ankara, Ankara. In the last 5 years alone, Turkey has experienced 16 violent terrorist attacks. 16. And three have been in the last five months. Please let that sink in.
Instead of dealing with the fallout the attack, Turkey instead ordered a ban on access to social media, including Facebook and Twitter, saying it was to stop people sharing images. Right. Meanwhile, it has emerged that the US embassy in Ankara warned its citizens on 11 March of a “potential terrorist plot” in the city. Nobody warned Turkish people, naturally. Who cares if we die, right? Certainly not our own government.
I’m sick and tired of living in a country where a bomb a month is the norm. I’m sick and tired of regular people dying every day because of an inept and incapable government. I’m sick and tired of being lied to. I’m sick and tired of fat rich old men going on TV and talking about loss as if they understand. I’m sick and tired of Turkish people shouldering the consequences of a corrupt and disgusting man’s decisions. I’m sick and tired of my friends having to mark themselves as ‘safe’ on Facebook every other day because another bomb has gone off. I’m sick and tired of being silenced and being afraid. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.
I know we’re not Paris. I know we’re not Europe. It’s easy to look at terror attacks that happen in London, in New York, in Paris and feel pain and sadness for those victims, right? Why not here? Why not us? Where’s the international outcry? Where’s the rage? Is it because you just don’t realise that Ankara is no different from any of these cities?
Please talk about this. Spread it all the more because they desperately don’t want people to know. We’re dying. Every day we’re fucking dying.

Korean artist Keun Young Park’s torn-paper portraits of floating figures, faces, arms and hands appear to be disintegrating into space. Some pieces are rather explosive, like in her “Dream” series, featuring figures that transform into trees and erupt into clouds of birds. Each image begins as a photograph taken by Park, which she manipulates digitally in Photoshop, then shreds into thousands of tiny pieces only to paste them back together again.
