evaluation
the theme for this project was to create a photobook that was sent off to be professionally printed. The theme of the book was entirely our choice, my chosen theme was landscapes as I thought that’d be best for me as I like shooting landscapes and thought it’d look good as a photobook. I enjoyed this project as we had more freedom over what we had to shoot, what we experimented with and how often we had to shoot and edit.
The part of the project I enjoyed most was actually going out to shoot and experimenting with different lenses to shoot landscapes with as this isn’t usually something that I’d do. This project allowed me to experiment further with image and text and page layouts to see what photos work well together and work to get the best placement for the photos.
For this project I have researched a lot of photographers as I have looked as both photographers from photobooks that I have used for inspiration and also photographers that have inspired me with my landscapes. These photographers include: Peter Bialobrzeski, Christian Reister, Christopher Mavric, Takao Itagaki, Jason Langer, Yulia Rodnina, John Gossage, Martin Parr and others. They’ve influenced me beginning with a theme of my book, all the way to layouts and the actual landscape photographs for my photobook.
The most successful part of my project was actually getting enough photos to be able to narrow down to my final photos which have made it into my photobook. I feel that I did actually experimented with other lenses which was the main point of the project so that was successful that I managed to complete that. I feel that my layout went well for my photobook and I have successfully managed to send it off in time for deadline and to receive it over the week off ready for the crit when I go back after half term.
I encountered a few problems in my project, the weather being the main problem meaning I sometimes had to change shoots or not go out and do them. Another being when I actually went out to shoot, for example when its raining I don’t feel I got the strongest image I could as it makes the photos look quite dull and it forces me to rush and not get the composition and framing of the photo right. However this didn’t affect my final book as I made sure I had enough photos to narrow my finals down to and made sure I had a variety of strong photos.
If I had the opportunity to do this project again I would probably create a list of places/locations that I could go to before starting the project and also if I had time create a proper front cover for the book. if I was to repeat the project and make a photobook again id do it on a different project such as street, documentary or portraits. I would also have a go at shooting some of it on film as it gives the photos a different approach and gives you the chance to see what works well different to digital.
I’d say that my photobook isn’t free of faults as things can always be improved. Some photos could be edited better or taken with a better-quality camera, however overall, I am happy with the photobook that I’ve sent off to be printed.

for this shoot i put a fisheye lens adapter onto my 18-55mm lens, this was also to experiment with a different lens. i did this in the same location as my 50mm shoot. i like how it creates the dark ring around the photo and how with this shoot the blue sky stands out and adds colour to the photographs.

as the idea of this assignment is to experiment with different cameras and lenses i decided to experiment and do a shoot with my 50mm lens. i would have liked to try this lens at a better location but due to not having the time i just decided to go into the woods behind my house to see what i could come up with.

this shoot was when i went to liverpool for the day. the location is Crosby and the artist who created the men on the beach is Antony Gormley. this was taken with my sigma lens. i thought that it’d be interesting to get both the beach and the men and to try the different perspectives.

narrative
Narrative in photography is the idea that photos can be used to tell a story by either single image or a series of images. ‘From the beginning, photographers introduced narrative and symbolism into their work’. Allen Feldman stated that the event is not what happens, the event is that which can be narrated. This is because photography captures single discrete moments and narrative. A narrative is an account of connected events. where as in photography, narrative is related to the idea of context. A collection of photographs that tell a story, convey an emotion, explore a theme or a location. they can range from purely visual to photographs with captions, to photographs accompanied with some text, to fully narrative essays where photographs are used only to illustrate the story. you can choose whether you want to focus more on a story or a theme or location
Photographs have a unique ability to convey a message and tell a story, whether that be something obvious such as a detailed flower or a celebration of a holiday or something more complex and abstract. at first glance the photograph is merely a way to document a single movement in time. first glances can be deceptive, however as a how a photograph is crafted has a significant impact on how a viewer interprets it. the way a photographer chooses to use their camera can dictate whether an image effectively tells a story and leaves the viewer with impression beyond the obvious. David Campbell once wrote, "In photography, narrative is related to the idea of context. No matter how complete or comprehensive a narrative appears, it will always be the product of including some elements and excluding others. Inclusion/exclusion is part of what construction is all about, but knowing what is best included or excluded requires an understanding of context. And an understanding of context requires visual storytellers to be highly proficient researchers."

image and text
experimenting with image and text, deciding what works well together and font styles, sizing and the text placing. for my photo book i’m not planning on putting any text on or with my image as i want the photos to speak for themselves; i'm also not very good at thinking of captions for the photos so think the text would let my photobook down and would seem random. i may include a bit of a introduction on the first page on what my photo books about what i have done with my photos and theme but i think that’s all i plan on doing with text.

for this shoot i had to go to a location and document the space by taking :
10 photos of the sky
10 photos of the ground
10 photos of detail
10 landscape photos
10 portraits
i didn’t manage to do portraits as i was out shooting on my own. due to my camera battery dying i had to shoot on my found and couldn’t really zoom to take any candid photos and my phone camera didn’t have a fast enough shutter speed to capture people walking past.

proposal
Throughout this course i have made a lot of progress, my knowledge, skills and understanding have really improved after the first seven units of the qualification. i now know a lot more than i did when i first started, such as skills needed for shooting at location and in the studio and basic composition techniques to take better photos and make sure they are exposed correctly and are framed well. this knowledge is very important for me to improve as a photographer and take better composed, professional photographs. This has influenced my choice of pathway and my project proposal because after experimenting i now know what i like to shoot and what i am best at to produce the best work that i can.
For this project i want a produce a well composed photo book focusing on the layout to make it look good. i have looked at and researched lots of photo books to see what sort of book i like, how they look and what photographs they include. i have thought about shooting a variety of things but i have decided to shoot both landscape, documentary and portrait as a mixed photobook. i have decided that this will keep me engaged in experimenting with different techniques while shooting my theme. i have decided to shoot mostly on digital (sony a77) ,however may try and experiment with a 35mm compact film camera too and if i like the results i may include them in my book too. I haven’t decided on a particular lens to use yet but i have thought about shooting on a 50mm lens but when didnt want this to cause a problem when shooting different things other ideas that i had include doing street photography, shooting at night, using apps on my phone to edit photos and specific colour themes. i will aim to do lots of shoots on my chosen theme so i have a wide range of photos to narrow down when it comes to choosing the final photos for my book to try and make the work the strongest it can be.

book 10 research
Christopher Mavric has dedicated his first book to the genre of street photography. Everything in his portraits of Austrians living in Vienna and Graz is ‘live’ and unstaged. The book features passers-by in the literal sense, contemporaries hurrying through both the picture and the city, but also dwellers and denizens in their respective district environments, waiting, lingering, or stranded on a bench, each in their own specific habitus, wholly contemporary or entirely of yesteryear – now suspended for all eternity in the photographic image featured in the book. “All the persons portrayed are strangers I photographed on the street. I asked very few of them for their permission. Everything had to go so quickly. Photographs are always more authentic when people don’t have time to think about how they look. Many of these captured situations seem absurd, and the people in it peculiar. But they’re not. It is all workaday, and the people are quite ordinary – they’re the people we encounter every day on the street.”
i chose this book as i like the theme of the candid street portraits, and the idea of using square photos and placing them in the middle of the pages. The portraits all work well with with backgrounds, as the colours of the subject and background contrast.

Christian Reister's intense, evocative photographs capture the hedonism of Berlin’s nightlife. With compact 35mm camera and monochrome vision, Christian Reister exposes the underground clubs, wild energy and random encounters of a unique city that comes truly alive after dark.
i chose this book as i like the effect of using a 35mm compact camera, i like the blur effect it gives on a lot of the photos and the grainy effect the film gives the photos, i think it works well with the city night time theme. i used this as an idea to maybe go out and shoot at night and if it works i may use this idea for my book.
