These schools prepare students to enter the Indian Naval Academy or National Defense Academy. At the moment, there are 25 such schools spread across the subcontinent. The admission procedure incorporates an entrance test including language, mathematics, and intelligence for class VI. For class IX students, the test comprises of subjects like mathematics, science, social science, and English. There will also be an interview and a medical examination.

Sainik Schools allow boys to join classes VI and IX based on their merit showcased via the entrance examination and an interview. Class IX boys; however, need to show the marks scored in the Class X board examination.
