“You know how hard it is to try to figure out what to get you for Christmas?” There’s a light teasing in her words as she speaks, clearly not that bothered by someone who was difficult to gift for. Ophelia’s favorite part of the season was seeing how people reacted when opening gifts, no matter how big or small they were. And for Blanc, there surely couldn’t be any complaints in receiving a coffee mug, especially a novelty one with a cheesy tagline about being a detective with a pipe for decorations. “I’ve got most people down, but you… you stumped me. And I figured, well, if nothing else, this was practical, and you’d probably use it for nothing else other than to hold pens on your desk or something.”

BLANC HAS ALWAYS CONSIDERED himself to be a simple man. It didn’t take much to please him. Anyone could get him anything and he’d find joy in it. So as he unwraps the mug, lips stretch into a wide grin. “This is perfect,” he muses, eyeing the line and the pipe etched into the side. Laughter bubbles past.

“Thank you, Ophelia. This is great.” Setting the mug aside, he produces a small parcel for her. It’s a charcoal drawing of a field and storm clouds. Blanc had it commissioned from a former client of his. “I hope you like this.” he says with a smile.

“IT WAS MIGHTY KIND OF you, Marta, to invite me over for the Christmas gathering.” Blanc wears an easy smile as he stands in the woman’s kitchen. He likes what she’s done with the place. Very cozy for being such a big home.

“Are you settling in nicely here?”

“YOU KNOW, IT’S STRANGE.” Blanc muses as he eyes the crowd. “I rarely ever stop to enjoy the festive moments. I normally have my nose pressed to the floor, following the next lead. But this is nice. Thank you for extending me the courtesy.”

Blanc sips from a steaming cup of hot chocolate as he watches people mill about the square. A small ice skating rink had been set up for the children. Trees and Christmas decorations liven up the place, despite the dismal weather. “I’m also glad we could finally come to an understanding.” A secret smile finds its way to Blanc’s lips.

FEET SLIP IN THE SNOW, breath puffing in the air. The elf had taken off with golden jewels. Not uncommon but certainly and oddity for Blanc’s line of work. But with how slow the holiday season can be, he’s desperate to take another.

“Damn,” he says when the elf slips through a particularly small hole that the detective is too big for. When he stops for air, Blanc realizes he’s not alone. “I don’ suppose you know away around this gate.”

“YOU KNOW,” BLANC BEINGS. “I’ve never actually attended a Christmas party I wasn’t working. But I suppose it makes the evening all the more thrilling.” He shares a bright smile with Ophelia as bright blue eyes scan the room. “Someone here is a murderer. But how is it?”

Glancing back towards the crowd, everyone blissfully unaware, Black prepares to go on the hunt.

CIGAR KEEPS HIM WARM. Combating the chill of the air. Gnarled hands rub together as Blanc jumps from foot to foot. He’s supposed to be meeting a client and the affair all seems to be quite...strange.

When the shadows move, Blanc calls out a greeting. “I take it you’re the one who called me about the shrinking Santa?”

Wendy took a moment to gather her thoughts, and nodded. Before standing she looked the man up and down, there was nothing that led her to be apprehensive and she she found the idea of sharing a cuppa with someone else comforting. 

“I’ll settle for not drinking it alone……. “ 

“VERY WELL,” HE GRINS. “The office has been slow anyway. It seems that even criminals need a holiday every now and then.” A soft chuckle parts Blanc’s lips as he escorts Ms Darling towards the tea shop. It’s blessedly quiet when they enter, the barista chipper and flirty. As with anyone, Blanc is cordial as he orders himself an herbal tea, stepping aside for Wendy to order hers.

Finding a seat near the window, foot traffic idling by, Benoit waits for their drinks.

    “I’m a profiler.” THE AGENT POINTS OUT A LITTLE BEMUSED - quartz orbs lingering on the detective. “Diplomacy is one of the first things i learned , not every problem requires a gun.” No , sometimes it required words. “In this case however , talking won’t do much good. You can read my notes on why if you want , but i’m telling you it won’t work.”

FROM TIME TO TIME, agencies of all sorts beg a boon with the southerner detective. After working for himself for so long, Blanc prefers finding out information for himself, or validating the statement of others. It’s not that he doesn’t trusts, he just wants to be sure. So while the agent may be right, the detective would rather see for himself.

“Well, when I am proven wrong, I give you permission to tell me you told me so.” Wry grin follows. “But for now, I will talk to them myself.”
