A previously aspiring doctor, now pushing towards a career in Medical Genetics. Technically not a Medicine Medblr, but hopefully my experiences can be useful in medical paths-less-travelled.  My repost blog is  @genomicsblrblr (https://genomicsblrblr.tumblr.com), while I write stuff here.

the cognitive dissonance from people who want the products of modern medicine but get weird about animal research. like im sorry but this is necessary for the survival of the society we currently live in. and the scientists who work on these things are not evil cackling psychopaths. anyone you talk to in animal research has incredibly complex feelings about their work and incredibly complex relationships to the animals in their care. there are regulations and oversight and penalties in place to make the work as humane as possible and scientists are overwhelmingly the ones enforcing and advocating for better care.

The reason vaginal atrophy in HRT is rarely discussed isn't because some nefarious boogeyman wants to transgenderficate all your pretty lesbian crushes into chronic pelvic pain it's because people don't give a shit about transmasculine reproductive health and you hijacking the topic for your detransition propaganda will only make things worse as you discourage transmascs from researching the subject and learning that it's treatable
"You'll live with chronic pain for the rest of your life is it worth it" casual ableism aside you're saying that as if vaginal atrophy doesn't happen to half of all postmenopausal people, what makes you think you're immune

one of my dad’s old doctor friends recently found out he’s got two X chromosomes
he’s taken it in stride and it’s just a fun fact he brings up but it’s killing me that he’s too old and offline for me to send him the ‘gee Billy’ meme

Dear scientists,
Please, for the love of God, please, make your papers more understandable.
Fuck you
Sincerely,
A college student on the verge of tears

i think it’s important to acknowledge that there is a contingent of doctors who have been… uh… coasting ever since med school ended. here’s a quick crash course in telling them apart
competent doctor: recognizes that your symptoms sound familiar but also realizes that the illness is outside the scope of their expertise, so they give you a referral
incompetent doctor: doesn’t recognize your symptoms, chalks it all up to a mental health and/or weight problem and refuses any follow-up care
competent doctor: stays up to date on the latest research in their field, is interested in sharing newly-discovered information with you
incompetent doctor: maintains the absolute minimum amount of knowledge to not have their license revoked
competent doctor: approaches their patients with good faith
incompetent doctor: assumes all patients are deceptive and have ulterior motives
competent doctor: recognizes crying and other overt pain symptoms as unacceptable and tries to resolve your pain any way they’re able
incompetent doctor: ignores pain and either refuses to attempt to treat yours or willingly worsens it during a treatment by ignoring your reactions
competent doctor: realizes they don’t have all the answers, isn’t intimidated by the thought that you attend other doctors
incompetent doctor: views their patients as income-generators and feels personally insulted when you attempt to leave their practice
competent doctor: recognizes all their patients are people; will be transparent about your treatment and speak to you with advanced and specific terminology if you demonstrate that you understand
incompetent doctor: views patients as a sub-class of people, justifies lying to patients as “for their own good”

THE NERDIEST WEDDING PROPOSAL 🤍💍
A different kind of wedding proposal could very well describe the story of this Visayan couple. Both are licensed chemists by profession working as science researchers at UP Diliman.
Corazon Ericka Mae Itang was beyond surprised by her boyfriend’s efforts in asking her hand last July 22, 2021.
Jacob Noel Inguito, made the proposal by making her run a synthetic peptide sample at work which later on resulted to a synthesize “MARRYME” peptide.
Peptides are short sequences of amino acids, which are compounds that make up a protein. Each letter of the “MARRYME” peptide represents one amino acid:
M - methionine A - alanine R - arginine R - arginine Y - tyrosine M - methionine E - glutamic acid
“Last week, one of my labmates (Chay Mendoza) gave me this sample to analyze. This is a normal occurrence in our lab, so I had no suspicions whatsoever. Little did I know that this sample will change my life forever.
So I ran the sample in the mass spec, and checked its spectrum against all known databases. Kaso, wala talaga akong makuhang sequence match. So, I did de novo sequencing instead.
Eh kaya naman pala… hahahaha. The sample was a synthetic MARRYME peptide! 🤯,” she wrote in her post.
Her boyfriend contacted Thermo Fisher Scientific—a US-based company that makes peptides, to synthesize the “MARRYME” sequence peptide. 📸: Corazon Ericka Mae via Doris Mondragon #CDNDigital — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3j52cVl
