what white people can do to protect muslims tomorrow: 9/11 edition
if you are from the NYC area, this is what you can do:
If anyone at work starts a discourse about 9/11, tell them you wish the nation would work tangibly (not theoretically) harder to protect the lives of muslims.
If anyone at work starts talking about their fear of “another terrorist attack,” tell them you’re afraid the KKK doesn’t slaughter black people today.
If anyone on the street is harassing a muslim, especially a visibly covered muslim, tell them to fuck off. do not call the police because the police do not try to protect muslims (call 911 if it is life threatening, though). ask the muslim if they are okay.
give up your seat on the MTA World Trade Center bound trains for muslims. it is scary to stand because we don’t know who can hurt us from behind or from the sides.
be so fucking polite, please.
anywhere else,
if they are being harassed, provoked, or look like they are in danger – get involved. call 9/11 if it appears life threatening. VIDEO IT.
if they are being ridiculed or treated poorly at work, ask them if they would like a cup of coffee. tea. if they need a ride home.
if cops are harassing muslims, take a picture of their face. take a picture of anything visible regarding their badge number or name.
BROTHERS AND SIS – MUSLIMS: please feel free to add to this. PLEASE LET THIS GET AROUND.
yall want to help? we are telling you how.

Please support a Tumblr Teacher’s Classroom via donations off of their Amazon Wish Lists and/or reblogging this post.
There are teachers from every grade level here.  I asked teachers to send me their wishlist if they needed classroom supplies and materials that their districts and/or students’ families would not be able to supply.  Many teachers on this list have been tumblr friends of mine for years, while some have just come to the #education community more recently.  The majority of the teachers here teach in Title I schools (areas of high economic need), special education, or are new teachers.  Your support makes a world of difference to our students and to us.  Here’s to a successful 2015-2016 school year!

Young transgender activist Blake Brockington mourned
My heart is so heavy. My thoughts are with Blake’s loved ones. Please remember his name: Blake Brockington.
“[3/24/15] CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Friends and community members are today mourning the passing of a local transgender youth activist, Blake Brockington, who died as the result of suicide overnight.
Brockington, 18, was a 2014 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School where, last year, he was nominated and later crowned homecoming king as an openly transgender student after winning a fundraising competition and drawing in $2,335.55 for a charity chosen by the school. Brockington’s homecoming win is believed to be the first for an openly transgender student in Charlotte.
Details of Brockington’s passing and any plans for memorials are not yet known. qnotes will provide updates as they become available.
Brockington’s death was confirmed and announced publicly Tuesday morning by Time Out Youth Center, a local LGBT youth services agency where Brockington received support.
The center is working today to ensure other youth and staff receive needed support. Executive Director Rodney Tucker says youth members and clients have been at their center since 9 a.m. this morning. A counselor will be on hand to speak with staff and is available to youth and clients throughout the day.
Brockington’s death is the second such local incident in recent weeks.”

Quote
Two roads diverged in an eldritch wood, And knowing i could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then split myself along my seam And set each half to walk one road: Two halves of me, a perfect team, Though each reduced, could share the load. I tell the tale of just one path For though I walked each road in part, One half alone emerged again, The other lost in the forest’s heart. I shall be telling this with a sigh Forever till my life is done: Two roads diverged in a wood, in which One half of me still roams, bewitched And never again shall we be one.
with my apologies to robert frost (via miniprof)

i hate the “it isn’t a choice”/”born this way” narrative because it’s basically just giving cishet people permission to think shit like “well he might be gay, but it isn’t his fault!” like being bi or a lesbian or trans or aromantic or whatever is only “acceptable” if you didn’t have any control over it. like it has to be some kind of unfortunate twist of fate. that’s not removing the stigma at all, it’s just treating non-cishet identities like some kind of burden. it’s a less bigoted rewording of “hate the sin, not the sinner.” like sure, some people might really be “born that way,” but should that really change anything? should we really have to provide excuses for our identities like that? it’s also completely ignoring the possibility that gender and sexuality can be fluid and that people can have control over their own identities and that the people and things and ideas you’re exposed to can influence the way you think about your identity

They are so amazing and speak so many truths - when I have my own clinic I’m going to put all of them up on the walls.  So beautiful!

I don’t know how to explain what that means anymore than I know why pretty much everyone knows the feeling.
It isn’t a migraine- but every sound is grating, every touch, everything. For people with PTSD, this feeling often comes right before or after a panic attack. I’ve learned over the years though that it isn’t something only people with mental illness experience.
Things you can do:
        1. Cocoon yourself. They make weighted blankets, and if you experience this often enough(and have the cash to shell out for them)- they’re pretty cool. But if not, get as many blankets as you can and wrap yourself in them. You want a solid, stable sensory experience.  For whatever the reason, the weight helps slow down the racing heart and may even allow you to sleep.
2, Take a shower in the dark.  Take a night light or something like that in there with you- if you won’t be able to do it in the total dark. Make sure everything is as quiet as possible, and then either take a shower or bath in the dark. I prefer almost too hot water myself. Showers in the dark are great for sensory input, because turning off the lights makes you pay more attention to your other senses, and you get physical, auditory, and smells too.
      3. Going in public? Wear a jacket. If you can avoid over heating in one- that is. Wearing a jacket will help add sensory input- and keep your nerves from picking up every stray accidental touch/whisper of the wind. Also carrying a grounding object in your pocket that you can rub/squeeze can help.
     4. Plank. Or really- any sort of thing that puts strain on a lot of muscles. Personally I like holding push up position, or doing downward dog. You probably don’t want to be doing something that requires you to move/touch too many different things- which is why you want things that put tension, but require you to remain relatively still.
       5. Joint Compressions. Start with your your shoulders- work your way down to your fingers. and then from the hips own the leg to the ankle. They advise doing each joint three times. A lot of children who have nerve issues are advised to get special brushes (they have soft bristles- and lots of them) so that they brush along their arms and legs in order to help calm them down.
       6. Beanie babies or other weighted dolls. Once again, this is something I learned from working with children. I’m not sure why it works, but it has. It’s probably that the weight provides a more solid sensory input- and the fact that it is a doll- it can also be a comfort toy of sorts.
