My transmasc experience was being fine being seen as a girl but growing up and hating the idea of being seen as a woman. “Young woman” was too much for me even before I knew I was trans. Womanhood seemed to come with so many more expectations for gender conformity than girlhood. As many other trans men and mascs have shared, about when I hit puberty was when I started being gifted makeup and spa kits that I was so uninterested in and never used, instead of toys and books and art supplies like before. I understand what people mean when they say “child” is treated like a separate gender.

Non-binary people, thoughts on the term “enby”
I hate it (and explain if you want)
I love it
I’m neutral or I don’t care
I have nuanced feelings (explain if you feel like it)

So I read Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe (colors by eir sister Pheobe Kobabe) and let me tell you all:
I fucking cried because I felt recognized in the pages of eir story. There were so many moments when reading when I had to pause and acknowledge "this is exactly what I did/was like/experienced as a child" and despite expecting a couple of those moments the accuracy of them blew me away.
Also the art is gorgeous and the way e weaves all the pieces and stories together makes it such a great read. I highly reccomend Gender Queer to everyone because it's can really give words to ideas & concepts you may be considering/feeling and/or explain things in a way that you may not have considered before.
One part that stood out to me is the concept of balance. Since e is afab there's so many things that can be used to "balance" that in terms of gender such as a short hair cut for them (or a massive undercut for me.) But also the idea that if you were born amab the options to acheive balance are much different and thus can leave you with the desire to have been born a different gender so that you could use different things to balance rather than feeling like you have to chose from a given set. (This is my takeaway/interpretation from this section/the whole book, not exactly what e wrote.) The whole concept really struck a cord with me and made me feel seen in a way that made me seriously happy.

[ID: The running away balloon meme. In the first panel, a person, labelled “me, an enby”, reaches for a yellow balloon, labelled “a video game where you create a virtual avatar”. In the second panel, a second person, labelled “"Are you a boy or a girl?“”, holds back the first person, who looks nervous. End ID]

"Sir" not in a masculine way but in a "heavily armored knight with an ambiguous gender and a very large sword" sort of way.
