JOSHUA DAVIS - Beyond Play: The Art of Creative Coding
Joshua Davis is a web designer who uses processing and flash to create artworks. In this lecture he discusses some of his works and the way he went about creating them. He discusses the way in which he enjoys creating complexity out of simplicity - beginning with simplistic shapes and developing them into something complex and interesting. Davis mentioned how he develops colour through arrays to generate random colours. He also likes to convert his digital works into physical objects such as murals or more intriguingly, skateboard decks.聽
Davis discusses how quite often "accidents" end up turning into projects which he works on further as he stumbles upon them. He also likes to include public involvement in his works - creating interactive designs. He gains his inspiration for colour palettes through images he finds and transfers to photoshop which can create colour swatches from the image.聽
Overall, Davis' lecture was very humorous and engaging, and offered inspiration into ensuring that you should be loving what you do and your job should incorporate things that you love doing. Work and play can be the same thing in your workplace.聽

I plan to use these images for my HTML page on dining etiquette. On this page I will focus on the way in which we are expected to behave in a fine dining restaurant.

Playing around with the layout of images on one of my pages. I have also developed the banner of two of my pages so that the image on the right is a link to the home page.

I took particular interest into the way in which we have adapted to using cutlery. In fine dining it is expected for us to use a fork in our left hand and knife in our right, however we have also adapted to having to work with the utensils we have whilst dining, where, for example, we could use a fork to cut up our food. However in fine dining this is not proper etiquette and is frowned upon.

These are some photographs taken during research into the process of fine dining. I looked into the order/system in which customers are served and also the way in which we dine - looking into how we use cutlery and the difference in our expected etiquette when dining at a fancy restaurant.聽

FINAL POSTER
This is the final poster I have chosen for my project. I chose to add a border made with processing to the poster, as I felt it contained the design more and by colouring it blue maintained the colour scheme.聽

These are the two posters I have chosen as developments to my final design. I liked the central focus of my artist model and chose to keep a simple plain background in order to maintain focus on the centre, and I also like the circular images of the poster which I chose to use in my own design. However I chose elements of other Mucha posters as inspiration for my fonts.聽

Development of my final posters. The quality of these images is lacking due to the fact the size of the actual poster being much larger than the screen size.

I have decided that my poster will be advertising a lipstick brand, as make-up is something that interests me and I feel I will be able to use floral elements from my artist model well to give a feminine focus to the poster. I have decided for the text used to be "pout" as this would be the brand of the fictitious make-up brand.聽

Some sketches I will consider using for my final posters, colour adjustments will be made in photoshop and processing to fit with the colour scheme

This is the poster I have chosen to use as a model for the poster which I will create. I plan to follow the general layout of this design, in particular the dominant circular image at the top of the poster. This is where I will incorporate most of the processing elements of my design. I also would like to incorporate text into the poster, therefore I may look at other examples of Mucha posters for inspiration. In terms of colour scheme, I will also try to have a relatively similar colour palette as this model. My hand-drawn elements will mostly be dedicated to drawing a central image similar to this one.聽

Bathroom at Scopa Cafe聽
We discovered this was an example of poor design, as both the taps and soap dispensers are motion sensored, however it is hard for the user to know straight away that this is how they function.
Bus Stop Pole
Used by cyclists to tie their bikes up, as opposed to the actual function to signal a bus stop.
Water Pipe
Many railings and pipes outside cafes and stores are used by dog owners to tie their dogs up as they shop/dine.
Grit on Walkway
This is an example of good design, by the waterfront there are gritted wooden walkways to stop people from slipping when conditions are wet.聽
Posters
The layering of new posters on top of older ones is a good example of interactive design.
Puddles
Formed from dripping from the overhangs in rainy weather, pedestrians are made to dodge the drips and puddles as the walk down the street.
Tree Art
Designed to make the tree grow straight, this object has also been made to be visually interesting for people who see it.聽
Road Work Signs
Road workers use sand bags to keep them from falling over as they are not聽bottom-heavy enough to stand up themselves.
