The relationship between Elita-1 and Optimus in the G1 cartoon has so much untapped hilarity potential despite only being shown in one episode, and I don’t even mean in a strictly romantic sense. It’s like… yes, they were girlfriend and boyfriend. Orion had huge plump lips and Ariel looked like the most stereotypical interpretation of a “girl robot” ever created. Orion was super weirdly possessive of her. Ariel died trying to get revenge for Orion’s death. They had another best friend nobody ever mentions again. Then the two of them are forcibly redesigned into siblings. Optimus accidentally leaves Elita behind and thinks she’s dead for ages. Then he goes to save her and accidentally makes everything worse for the “female Autobots.” Elita chooses death to save Optimus. Optimus takes her to their dad and then it’s revealed that only Optimus can “interface” with her and thus he frags his sister back to life. All the other female Autobots seem so close with their male counterparts and have a bittersweet lingering goodbye, but Optimus says I’m outta here SO fast.

Can I ask you about your favorite things about Elita 1?

Of course, I love talking about her! The first time I saw Elita-1 was in the Sunbow cartoon and I liked her immediately. The first thing I appreciated was her competence! She and her team were holding out on Cybertron for millions of years in secrecy before the other transformers reawakened on Earth! Next was her fair-mindedness and spirit of self-sacrifice.

When Moonracer messes up and blows the female Autobots' cover, Elita just considered it a victory that they were all still alive, and Elita risks her life to give her team a chance to escape, and then she sacrifices herself again for Optimus later. And these decisions were the correct ones, because they pay off in the end for her. All of these character traits already existed before she was upgraded into Elita-1, too, since we saw her past self Ariel was the only dockworker who knew the Decepticons might be evil, and she tried to attack Megatron when he started killing her friends.

Also, I just really love the type of hero who is a truly good person who has to construct an outwardly cold persona due to heavy burdens and suffering from external sources beyond their control. I thought it said a lot about Elita-1 that she would say, "Elita-1 knows no fear!" like that. She's very charismatic, but in a way that feels more detached than maybe other characters. A lot of Elita's suffering across continuities comes from feelings of abandonment, but she's normally a leader who can't really take the time to process these feelings. The Skybound comics are doing a good job of showing this side of her now, where on the one hand she's really upset and resentful of how how Optimus wants to sacrifice to save people, while she is a hypocrite because she also sacrificed so much to save people. Even in the Sunbow cartoon, think of how Elita must feel to have been upgraded specifically to match Optimus, down to her internal systems, only to end up alone multiple times.

Alternatively, without all of the suffering or a story about being abandoned, Elita-1 might just be a badass who loves hitting the gym and giving people good advice. I also think she's fun that way!
