Writing is a social activity because it connects people together. When someone creates a piece of writing they are making it to share with other people. It brings people together and starts conversations when discussing it. In class we talked about the process of writing and how it is shared with others through socialization and distribution. These terms explain how people interact with writing and how they take it up themselves. This also relates to the term remediation which means to take a text and change it to create a new meaning. This is a social activity because it allows people to interact with one another through their writing and connect.

questions:
How many concepts do you have to apply from our class?
Is the topic I picked relevant to writer identity?
Can you relate it to more than one article, and does it have to be one we read in class?

First topic: For the final project I could write about the space I write in for my writing identity. I could talk about the environment, the things I wear, eat and use to keep myself focused while writing. I can incorporate chat to explain the entire process of my writing and the factors that can go into it. I will include the grassroots article, left hand literacies to explain how writing in a specific environment is important.
Second topic: For the final project I could write about how the books I read that influence my writer identity. I could incorporate my favorite authors and the discourse communities I am a part of for being a fan. I also can include the different genres that thew books have and the conventions. I will talk about how these authors make me want to write like them. I will use the grassroots article flossed in America.

Standardized english being seen as a norm is a problem. Both the texts are saying that standardized English was based off of speech privileged white communities that resulted in creating a racial hierarchy. This means that this language was used at the time to show power. This supports the false idea that specific languages are superior compared to other languages. Standardized English does not include other communities and can teach students the wrong idea. Having standardized English can make it harder for people in education and in job opportunities if they don’t have the exact language they are looking for. Languages change over time and have many different ways to be represented. Standardized English shows that other languages aren’t welcome in the academic environment which can hurt students’ sense of identities and community. This connects with Adichie’s, “The danger of a single story” because she explains how looking at something from one perspective can't let you see the entire story. People make assumptions about others based off of a single thing. This relates to her idea because there are so many different kinds and types of languages that change over time. Looking down on someone because they don’t know standardized English ruins people’s identities and shows the lack of respect for their language.  In schooling not understanding the exact from of standardized English based on the factors of where you're from shouldn’t mean they are any less capable of achieving anything. Standing one language on a pedestal makes other people look like they are less if they can't achieve unnecessary standards for a language that doesn’t even represent them. It's important to look at language from all perspectives. As writers and people, it's important to understand that all languages are different and to appreciate everything about them. It's important to stay educated and never to make assumptions about other languages or people.

Quote: The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.
The entire talk, Adichie expresses the idea of how people make assumptions about others over a single story they hear. People hear a continuous story, and they start to believe it is true without actually being educated on it. It can be hard to avoid doing this especially with social media and the news, but Adichie talks about how this has affected her. The quotes emphasizes that when looking at someone you need to look at them from every “story” they have. She uses the example of when she traveled to Mexico and she made assumptions before she actually went. She was expecting chaos and people trying to leave like the stereotype of immigration. Instead, she came to find a place of peace in everyday life, functioning like it normally would. She realized she did the same thing that she was trying to avoid. She shows that there are many things that makes up a person and you can't look at them as the stereotype they are grouped in. She states that these stereotypes could be true but that doesn’t mean there isn’t another side to the story. That a single stereotype or story doesn’t make up a person or the entire story. This is very important message to remember in everyday life to never assume something about someone.

Powerlifting community:
I am a part of the powerlifting community. Powerlifting is a form of weight lighting and training that is based off strength and the three main lifts. This community has the same set of goals of getting stronger and advancing their weights on the lifts. Mechanisms of communication consist of group chats and talking in person at the gym. While participating members provide feedback and information to each other. The groups encourage each other to get better and help each other at the gym by providing spots and support. They have specific genres of lifts and requirements and rules in powerlifting. There is specific language that only someone who was in powerlifting would understand such as the name of different lifts. They're member must be educated and have knowledge to be a part of the community.
Book reading:
A few of my friends and I have started reading the same books and talking about them after we all finish it. The community’s goal is to read the same novel and discuss it. Mechanisms of communicating are through group chats on social media platforms and talking in person. The group holds each other accountable to read their book.  The books are specific to the group because we choose the one, we want to. Only members who read the book would be able to understand the conversation.
High school cheer alumni
I went to Lincoln way east high school, and I did cheerleading all four years. I am now apart of a community of people and alumni that were all once a part of the program. The goal of the group is to stay in touch and to support the new teams that come each year. The group communicates through a Facebook group page. There is specific language that only the members could use through their experience in the program. They are able to support each other through this program and have discussions on all things cheer related.

harry potter
Harry potter a popular book series, has been remediated into multiple things. To start it's been transformed into a movie series based off the books. Turning a book into a movie can be hard and every detail will not be able to go into the movie. It was shifted to fit the storyline and plot in the time restrictions. Harry potter has also been remediated into many other things such as toys, clothes, and even a whole amusement park after it. At universal studios they have a whole experience that makes it seem like you are in the harry potter world.
Unenchanted
The novel unenchanted is a book series that was created from the original Grimm Brothers' fairy tales. It is a novel about a teenage girl that is affected by her family curse. The girl must live through different fairy tales to stay alive. The novel includes original fairy tales from the Grimms fairy tale book and the Grimm brothers as well. The novel shifts the tales to match the storyline of the book and creates a remediation with a new meaning.
Star Wars
Like the harry potter series Star Wars has been remediated in many ways. Star Wars is a book, a movie, clothes, toys and an amusement park. This past year Disney has opened up a resort where you can have the complete Star Wars experience. They allow you to spend a few nights in this resort where you can live in the Star Wars world. They have all the character that act like they are in the Star Wars movie. You have Star Wars food, you can dress like the movie, and you even participate in some of the events.
Van Gogh art show.
Over winter break I went to the van Gogh light art show in Chicago. This show takes all of his pieces and creates a light show projected over the walls. It makes the art into a show that you can watch and learn about. It was an interesting experience, and it shows a prime example of remediation. It takes the artists artwork and turns it into something even more beautiful.

Throughout school I was assessed by either tests, presentations, or papers. Every class I have taken I am always aware of the expectations in the class and what we were going to be doing throughout the year from the syllabus. For tests it was usually multiple choice with a scantron, that you had to choose the correct answer to get points. For presentations when you present in front of the class, it is graded by a rubric. The rubric shows what is expected, and the teacher decides if you meet the expectations. For a paper it's similar to a presentation but it is more writing based rather than how you present yourself and talk. It is also with a rubric and the teacher has to decide if they think it meets the standards. The evaluation criteria consist of whether the information you are giving is accurate, if it is well done, and if it meets the requirements that the rubric is asking for. The specific learning goals the criteria was trying to represent depend on the unit you are in for the class. Each assignment usually has a specific goal and something new that you are learning. For example, if you're writing a paper, one unit could be about informative writing or another one could be about persuasive writing. While doing the assignment you learn new skills and accomplishing the goal of the unit. I think teachers especially at Illinois state do a good job at evaluating their students. I think teachers in general need to focus on teaching the kids the information and testing them in a way that doesn’t overwhelm them with information for no reason.

Little Red Riding Hood:
The story of little red riding starts with a young girl who was gifted a red hood by her mother, hence the name. They lived near the woods and the mother sent little red riding hood to bring wine and cakes to her grandmother. Her grandmother was very sick, and she only lived an hour away by foot through the forest. Her mother emphasizes that little red riding hood needs to stay on the path because the woods can be a very dangerous place. On her walk there she ran into a wolf. The wolf was very friendly, and the girl told him where she was going. The wolf tricked her into going off the path and he went to the grandmother's cabin before her. He went inside and ate the grandma whole. He then continued to get dressed in her clothes and waited for little red to come and see him. By the time little red riding hood was there she could feel something was wrong. Once she saw the grandma and how different her features are she was scared. The wolf attacked her and ate her whole. Ways away a lumberjack heard the screams and went to see what happened. He found the wolf asleep and cut him open to see if they were still alive. Little ride riding hood and the grandma were still alive and managed to escape and get back at the wolf. Little red riding hood met another wolf a few days later and learned her lesson. Her grandmother and her were able to protect themselves and kill the wolf. This story started off by being told orally and passed down through generations. This was how most tales originated. This version of the story was a part of the grimm’s fairy tales. These brothers took stories and tales directly from common villagers and created a piece of literary artwork. The story has changed over time and there are many different versions. The story I summarized was one of the first versions, but it can be hard to know for sure which one was the most accurate. There are versions where little red riding escapes the worlf on her own without being saved by a lumberjack, and there are also versions where she doesn’t survive.
Rapunzel
The story of Rapunzel starts with a husband and wife who wanted to have a child. They lived in a house and right behind it was a garden owned by a sorceress. The family finally got pregnant, and everything seemed to be working out. One day the mother saw the greens, Rapunzel, in the garden behind them. She could not stop craving the greens and felt like she was going to die without it. she begged her husband to steal some from the sorceress or else she would die. The first time the plan was successful, and the husband gave it to her wife so she felt better for awhile. The second time he went back he was caught. The sorceress was enraged and made him a deal. She said she would allow him to take the rapunzel forever if they gave up their child the wife was going to have. He agreed. She named her new daughter Rapunzel and locked in her in a tower in the woods. Rapunzel had very long hair and the only way anyone could get into the tower was by climbing her hair like a ladder. The sorceress would do this often and would always check up on her. One day the king’s son overheard Rapunzel singing, and he called out for her to let her hair down. He went up there and fell in love with her. He asked her to be his wife and every day he would come and visit her with silk for her to make a ladder so she could come down. The sorceress found out and was infuriated. She cut off Rapunzel’s hair and took her to the woods to suffer. Then she waited for the prince’s arrival. She used Rapunzel’s cut off hair to trick him into climbing into the tower. Once he saw the evil sorceress he felt at a loss and threw himself out of the tower. He survived the fall but landed on thorns that poked his eyes out. He spent the rest of time being depressed until he heard a sweet voice in the woods one day. He was reunited with Rapunzel and the twins that she gave birth to while he was gone. He cried of happiness and his eyesight returned. The story of Rapunzel was also one of the original stories from the Grimms fairy tales. These were oral stories that were passed down from generations that were turned into a piece of literature. This story went from being told orally, to literature, to a movie. The story has changed through each different convention. In the movie the story is not scary and is for children to watch. The movie changed the characters compared to the original version. The husband and wife were the king and queen of a kingdom. The man that found Rapunzel was not a prince but a thief. He did not go blind, and he in the end cut off Rapunzel’s hair. The movie also incorporated more magic than the original and made Rapunzel’s hair have a power. This is a prime example of how stories can be taken and changed to create something else.

introduction
Hi everyone, I am Geena DiBenedetto. I grew up in Tinley Park, Illinois. I have an older brother and a twin brother who also attends Illinois State University. In my free time I enjoy working out and reading. Although I am still undecided in my major, I am leaning towards doing something in criminal justice or law. I enjoy reading books of fiction and mystery novels. I do not enjoy informative books depending on the topic. When writing I enjoy writing persuasive papers and i struggle writing informative essays. In this course I hope to increase my writing abilities and learn to become a better reader overall by understanding the deeper meanings the text has.
