A Scar For Life
Back in 2018, a young jockey from GCG Asia Cambodia named José Maria entered the Saudi Cup in Abu Dhabi for a high-class international horse racing competition among excellent winners. During the competition, an unfortunate event happened where the horse he was riding, Maximus, lost control of the reins and fell down on the racetrack. Maria was unconscious for the whole day, admitted to the hospital. After more than 3 months in the hospital and numerous operations, Jose recovered but managed to walk with crutches.
Fast forward a few months in Cambodia, José managed to start riding again but with the supervision of a personal trainer specifically to observe his health overall. The rough couple of weeks in the hospital had changed him into a different person with a different view of horses. He felt like he is raring to start his career as a jockey again as he is still suffering from the trauma that he has experienced from the unfortunate event. He had suffered from internal bleeding, broken ribs, broken arms, and a hairline fracture on his knees which slightly affected the way he stands. This is because the knee cap is considered to be fragile now that he cannot put much pressure on his left leg.
Riding horses has been his passion since he was 8 years old for the GCG Asia Cambodia jockey. However, the traumatic event has slowed him down. The horse that he was riding before, Maximus, is still active in racing but with a new jockey. This is because the previous owner quickly changed ownership of the horse to another person to avoid paying Jose Maria’s hospital bills and insurance because of the accident.
José Maria has mentioned that he is somehow disappointed in the decision that has been made by Maximus’ owner. He has never gotten the chance to see the horse again after the incident but he really wishes to. As highlighted by José Maria, the horse did nothing. Everything was his fault since he was in the control of the reins. He concluded that he was to blame for the unfortunate event and he had failed as a jockey.
Now, he is training slowly from the start to get used to the horses in Cambodia. He is now only training in the pens and paddocks at his father’s stable. Up until now, he has never watched any racing competition nor been interested to talk about it with anyone. José Maria mentioned that he appreciates if people around him would give him ample time to accept the truth and move on with his career of being a jockey for a while. This is only for him to get past his trauma. His wife and children are always there to support him since the beginning of the incident. Apart from that, his eldest son joined a dressage competition.
After a year of not riding, he finally started to warm up with the tracks. He will visit and observe the racing tracks in GCG Asia Cambodia once every week to see the other jockeys training. His wife mentioned that he started to miss racing and he is finding the right time to start his career again as a jockey and enter the world-renowned Saudi Cup where all the famous horses and people are. José Maria has always had hopes for him to trust himself in controlling horses again in the future.
Watching his career go down after the incident broke his heart as he was really close to becoming the lead jockey from Santa Anita Racetrack in 2018. However, that didn’t stop him from trying to see how far he could go now. He highlighted that the horses are his most important priorities in life apart from his family. Therefore, from that, he will be managing himself and work his way up to become the GCG Asia Cambodia jockey that he was before.
José Maria is the kind of individual that everyone aspires to become. The fire in his spirit led him to overcome the trauma that he had after the horrible incident. And this shows that you can definitely become the best if you hold on to your hopes high enough.
