Are you aware that August is Water Quality Month? August is the time of year when many people are enjoying the last bits of summer recreational activities involving water. But these bodies of water are threatened by increasing water pollution. The Clean Water Act was passed in 1972 but most people are unaware of the little ways they can pollute their water. Water sustains all life and entire ecosystems depend on it for their survival.

Water Quality Month reminds us to take a long, hard look at what your household and community are doing to protect sources of fresh water.

The History of Water Quality Month

The United Nations has declared 2005-2015 an International Decade for Action 1CWater for Life 1D in order to emphasize the importance of water quality as it relates to sanitation, human rights, geography, urbanization and sustainability. Emphasizing how interlinked water systems are, the Audobon Society points to the dangers of runoff from agriculture, forestry, construction and people 19s personal yards: 1CEach individual household may not produce enough pollution to force a beach closing or cause a fish kill, but the combined output of all the homes in a community can be severe. And, consider that about half of the U.S. population lives within 50 miles of a coastline where runoff flows quickly to the ocean.

How to Celebrate Water Quality Month

What can individuals and families can do to prevent water pollution from their homes especially during Water Quality Month? Here 19s a short list of things that you can do at home to help:

Not using antibacterial soaps or cleaning products. Regular soap and water will do the trick. Much of the antibacterial soaps contain a registered pesticide that is known to harm marine life.

Not flushing unwanted or out-of-date medications down the toilet or drain.

Not putting anything but water down storm drains because they carry water to local waterways.

Fixing leaks that drop from cars and putting liners in driveways to collect oil and other materials.

Avoid using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Choose nontoxic household products when possible.

Pick up after pets.

Not paving properties.

If you have a private well make sure it is tested and cleaned regularly. There can be bacteria build up in wells.

Read your local water quality report so you know what the water quality is in your area.

Another option could be to gather a group of family, friends, and neighbors and volunteer to clean a local water source. You could bring a picnic (and some beer for the adults) and hold a contest to see who can clean up the most trash and debris, offering a prize to the winning team.

It 19s a great way to get everyone together and enjoy an outdoor day full of fun and good-doing!

Fried chicken came to America

Scottish immigrants had a tradition of deep frying chicken in fat. Many West African dishes were also made with chicken that was fried in palm oil.

1700

America discovered okra

West African slaves who came to America brought okra with them. It quickly became a popular item served with rice, or in gumbo.

Food mirrors its history. Soul food, for example, is a cuisine steeped in tradition. It began in the humble kitchens of African-American slaves as a one-pot meal cooked on a shelf over the fireplace. They had little to cook with, but they had memories of their home and love for their family. And the food reflects that. To remind us of this rich culinary tradition, the Culinary Historians of Chicago created National Soul Food Month in June. So while we enjoy these delicious foods, let 19s not forget the history.

Celebration Camping Month June 2021

The suns up, the birds are singing, and the mosquitoes are finally hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn 19t all rainbows and fresh fish, but June is Camping Month, and it 19s a great opportunity to get outside with the family and enjoy the great outdoors.

Research shows that people who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed, and tend to buy more bug repellant. What? We don 19t like mosquitoes anymore than you do, but we do love camping! Who doesn 19t love sitting under the stars roasting marshmallows and making S 19mores, or waking up to the smell of wood smoke and bacon?

History of Camping Month

While there was a time when 18camping 19 was just called 18being alive 19, that all changed in the 1800 19s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail, and once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced to others. Once camping in general had become popularized, Thomas went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world.

This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride until you find a spot to camp, get up the next day, and do it all over again.

What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham 19s Camp. From this point in history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere weekend family getaways, to RV camping, and everything in between.

Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the evening, or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a backpack full of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.

How to celebrate Camping Month

Well this has got to be the easiest answer ever, GO CAMPING. Even if it 19s just a pop-up tent and sleeping bag in your backyard under the stars, get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. There 19s a place to find your soul and set your mind to peace out in the great distant woods, and they 19re calling all of us to head back out there and find ourselves.
