Mini GARP Project
Las Meninas is the oil painting by Diego Velazquez (painted in Madrid 1656) that Picasso used as reference for his own paintings. I liked the technique in which Picasso cropped sections of the image and created a different style for each one, focusing on each individual, It still tells the story but in a modern way for a modern audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my Mini GARP Project I have been asked to develop a practice based outcome from my research. I discovered the painting ‘The Minuet’ meaning ‘The Dance’ by Giandomenico, which shows the Carnival in 17th century Venice. My GARP is to tell the story of Venice Carnival through illustration and interactivity. By using Picasso’s method of cropping and creating stylised sections I could create plenty of experiment work. Id like to combine my new illustration style with Print and foiling and create 12 outcomes to put along side the image I worked from like Picasso presented his.
Tumblr media
Another painting I found from the book ‘Casanova’s Carnival’ is the Ridotto by Pierto Longhi, the image below is a different one to the one I found in the book, however this painting offers a more to work from in terms of story.
Tumblr media
I think this is the image that I would like to set my project on, my next steps are to print off the image and start sketching ideas then drawing onto tracing paper, I might also print this image onto tracing paper and incorporate sections.

My Concept
It’s all good having an idea of creating interactivity and illustration to intrigue and audience but the message is also important, if I want my work to by educational what do I want to say?
LIST BOOKS!
And show them labelled into sections

Summer Sketches
After My trip to Venice and Barcelona this summer, I looked back at the projects I created with Printeractive and realised the illustrations could of been better if I had focused more on them.I recreated some illustrations in a new style influenced by the tips and the new artists I discovered throughout summer.
However after reviewing my summer work with my tutor, she suggested I should try and use just pencil for my sketches rather than biro as it is unblenndable. This is something I will take on board for the next project

Printeravtive
During my second year at University, I had the amazing opportunity at an Internship with Printeractive. I was able to make my Illustrations and prints interactive by using Arduino, I learned the basics of HTML and CSS anatomy, S4A, Fritzing, Java Script and jQuery. It was a challenge that I enjoyed as I was so used to creating imagery that I liked and at what scale I wanted. In Printeractive I had specific briefs, for example the first project was to support the Liverpool Walker Art Gallery where we made mini robots with Leonardo Da Vinci inspired illustrations printed in thermochromic ink that changes colour with heat. The purpose was to show young people that maths and science can also be fun and creative.
Tumblr media
It was interesting to plan how you want an audience to interact with your design and how you have to plan the method of making, I found the printing and building side of things challenging but I had great ideas and I managed to make them work.
My favourite design was the Musical Ribs, I thought it would be intriguing for children to be able to play some music, and add a bit of humour by playing a Xylophone on an image of Leonardo Di Vinci’s drawing of a human Rib Cage.
Tumblr media
I drew out the idea, and planned to screen print the design with electronic ink. The challenges I faced was that the paint dries very quickly! I then cut into each rib and attached the Makey-Makey ready to programme. The programming was challenging, but I enentually created the ribs. The only thing left to do was create a box.
I needed to design a box to hide the wires, making the design look cleaner and more professional to present in the museum. I started by measuring the print to fit onto the box. I set up a design in Illustrtor ready to laser cut, leaving a hole on both top and side of the box for the wiring and the pen to play the musical ribs.
After fitting the box together, I relaised I didn't take into considertation the material I used and its width. I used 3mm plywood therefore the edges did not fit perfectly together, after gluing everyting together, I relaised if one of the wires became loose, there is no way of fixing it.
Since we had a tight deadline, there was no time to re-print the box, however I came up with an idea to make the lid magnetc, I applied 4 metel pieces of scrap in each corner that the magnets successfully cliked on to.
Tumblr media
What I have learned from this internship is you have to consider everything before you make, how do your illustrations fit the brief? How will people interact with your design? What is it you want to say? and How will you make the design?

Barcelona
Shortly after Venice I took a trip to Barcelona to enjoy the Architecture and Art of the city. I visited Gaudi’s Architecture including Park Guell, Casa Battlo and La Sagrada Familia. I also visited the Pablo Picasso Museum, where my main influence for my new illustration style developed.
There was one image that captivated me as I thought it was a clever way to produce a solid quality and quantity of experimentation work. Pablo would take a landscape and name each figure, then crop sections and change the drawings style for each one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bought a book of Picasso’s line drawings to influence quick sketches.
Tumblr media
Arriving back in Liverpool, I came across a few more illustrators and artists to influence a new illustration style:- Christopher Corr, Iris Schwartz, Cynthia Marakart and Aubrey Beardsley.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a lot of trial and error, eventually I created something I enjoyed and was happy with showing to people. The image below I created for a small competition for merch to see if people liked the new style.

A summary of my time in Venice and how it led me to change my idea
As much as I loved my trip to Venice, I came home feeling unsuccessful with my trip, as if I had massively overlooked something and missed the opportunity. While I was in Venice visiting museums and galleries, I was looking for details relating to Carnival and some examples of how things were made.. A lot of which where in text. Of course tourists visit to see the history and culture of the city, however with an audience full of tourists in 2019 there was nothing really technical?I realised I only knew what was going on in the museums because I researched before hand. A lot of information was black and white with “do not touch” signs, this helped me come to the realisation that I personally learn from interaction. Of course it was great to see the Venetian tradition of lace, glass and mask making still in progress in the streets of Venice , but my interest has always been on the Carnival... and there was only one museum in Venice that showed this, the Musiem of Palazzzo Mociengo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way in which the rooms where designed where intreging, Asif I was walking through an 18th century Venetian home, with life sized figures. I can remember everything visually and I would love to make something where other people Han have a similar experience. I began to wonder how many people know about the carnival, I visited the museum twice and it was empty both times. Do tourists just come for the scenery and photography? When they see these traditional Venetian masks to they know the origin? I began to think what if I could communicate this story in an educational way through technology that today’s society could level with.
Tumblr media
Then it clicked, I could use my internship with Printeravtive to my advantage. I can start researching what I want to say about the carnival and I can then design and communicate them through interactive and UX design.

Art Nouveau and Art Deco
Art Nouveau is an art style used in architecture and applied art. It was popular from 1990-1910, starting in England and flourishing across Europe.
Art Nouveau is described as balanced and its the styles “opposing ideas” that give it it’s intellectual foundation. The style is described as mystical and romantic, which creates narrative and emotion. “On one hand art Nouveau concerns itself with the improvement of society; a face for good on the other hand is a dark, deafest, immoral; a vehicle for pornography”. Styles included in Art Nouveau included asymmetrical lines, dramatic flowing lines, floral patterns such as leaves, flowers, and birds.

Art Deco
Art Deco is a “sumptuous style, that defies precise definition, or beginning and ending points”. The Art Deco style was very fashionable with accessories such as fans depicted in a lot of illustrations along with geometric motifs. The main icons in this style were flowers, maidens, birds, and lightning bolts.
Nobility was still very much in power during this time period, “Art Deco was at first available only for the wealthiest fashionable consumers. Then it became visible for the workaday world”. Eventually the trend was lost and the style was seen as old fashioned. Fortunately, the style has made a comeback and is used on greeting cards for example which is something that reminded me of the style and to look into it for this project. Below are a few more examples of the styles I have found during my research.

Alfredo Sosabravo
Alfredo Sosabravo a Cuban artist who has “cultivated distinct specialties”. Alfredo’s work is divided into 2 parts, “two dimensional works which include paintings, engravings, collages, drawings and the three dimensional works which include ceramic, glass and bronze”.
His work expresses elaborate fantasy with a profound artistic maturity and essence. The result is exciting, the glass masters and their compact team of well-versed artisans gave shape to an idea and a fantasy in incandescent glass that, with time, will clear the soul of fire forever.

The Gazing Ball
Tumblr media
Gazing balls were first used in the 13th century for “spiritual and aesthetic reasons”. The globes were bought by noblemen as garden decorations and were seen around palace gardens in Vencie.
European kings believed that the globes held “magical, mystical powers and brough good luck to the monarch and his family”, Similar to the belief that the macarons on the Bridge of Sighs scare away evil.
The balls were believed to “ward off evil spirits, ghosts, disease and malicious intruders”. If the gazing ball was placed at the front door of a house it was to protect them against witches, “the witch would see her reflection and be frightened away before casting an evil spell”.
Tumblr media
In the early 20th century, the gazing ball was seen as a symbol of “status, wealth and success”. The ancient superstitions gradually died out and so did the wealthy status. Today in the 21st century the gazing balls are nothing more than garden decoration, “If placed properly the globe should reflect the entire garden and the sky above it”. Today’s gazing balls are mainly used as solar panels, or pretty garden lights.

Glass skin
Glass skin is “imitation” glass. It is opaque white glass known as lattimo - late - milk. It imitates the “earliest porcelain samples from China”. It also looks like Chalcedony which is a “variegated opaque glass with multicoloured veining”. When the glass became fashionable in Europe, the Venetians decorated the glass with enamels and gold, depicting genres, scenes, mythical subjects and Rococo motifs.
There are stores in Vencie that create good luck dolls made of this type of glass. It is almost a 3 in 1 craft of glass, costume/mask and lace. Though they are too expensive to buy as a souvenir...
“Noble Child: Genuine Venetian Doll of baked porcelain, hand-painted and decorated. Fabrics, cloths and trimmings are tailor-made in our Venetian workshops. Arms and legs are movable, so as to allow you to place the item in the desired posture (standing, sitting…).
Height (Standing): 50 cm”
