Ya girl has been published 👀👀
My gynandromorph amazon ant find and photoshoot is featured in the fall edition of the American Entomologist journal! Just a perfect bizarre creature ❤️🖤
(Polyergus longicornis, male alate/female worker split)
When I found this creature in 2022, I would have been far more comfortable starting this post with "ya boy"
Another reason this creature is and probably always will remain my favorite find.
Happy Intersex Awareness Day. ♥️

glimpse into my beautiful imaginary world where arthropods are really big and we domesticated them
edit: people are starting to say some "my worst nightmare" or "eeeww no that one is yucky and scary" comments on this like they do on any bug post and id like to say. it's fine if you don't like bugs it's fine if you're scared of bugs but don't put that on MY post clearly talking about how much i like them and how cute i think they are. you can make your own damn post about how much you hate wasps or spiders or whatever. i'm blocking people who make these kinds of comments.

reading an online discussion about fairy shrimp and someone remarked that "what they lack in charisma, they make up in vigor" and maybe I'm just hopelessly bug-pilled but I think these sad little feathers with the dot eyes deserve at least some universal cute credit

I found such a sweet little elephant weevil today! <3
#I was having the absolute worst morning at work but seeing him on my way home redeemed the whole day tbh#gardeneticisms#creature photography#insects#beetles#weevils#orthorhinus cylindrirostris

I didn't know what to expect from my trip to Mulu National Park in Sarawak, Bornean Malaysia before the tenth World Congress of Herpetology in Kuching, but it certainly wasn't this phenomenal animal, Pelobatrachus nasutus (formerly Megophrys nasuta), the long-nosed horned frog. What a creature! Anatomically it is fascinating, with several dermal modifications that give it that remarkably effective camouflage (not quite clear what those nipple-like chest tubercles are for, though). Its behaviour was also strange. Millennia of relying on camouflage to protect it from predators has given the species an uncommonly impassive disposition, and it remained practically completely still no matter what we did. This made it an awesome subject to photograph, as there was no shortage of opportunity to play with lighting and composition. Such a treat!

Little leaf bug friend! He’s posable 💛
First time making a posable felt friend like this. All hand sewn! Took a long time but I’m proud of this little bugger

Ok I COMPLETELY forgot to update this. Here are a few of the moths I found with my simple setup and their IDs to the best of my ability! (P.S. I recently got a much better camera and am having a blast testing it out on these bad boys)
Prasinocyma rhodocosma (“Northern Emerald”)
Wingia rectiorella
Utetheisa lotrix (“Crotalaria Moth”)
Chrysodeixis argentifera (“Tobacco Looper”)
Hypoperigea tonsa
I’ll probably post some more as well, these were just my favourites of the moths!
First night trying some moth-catching! I saw people using this technique on tiktok with some great results, I want to get more lights in the setup but even just this one UV floodlight attracted so many different kinds of moth! I’ll add a reblog when I get home with some photos I took of them :]

these army ants tend to move in groups of 4, with the line leader leading the expeditions. They have terrible eyesight, so rely on the sound of the Line Leader's bell staff, and the the pheromone map made by the previous expedition to know where they're heading.

I will never understand how people can dislike Cicadas, like they're singing their special bug song and you're privileged enough to hear it, what's not to love
