Benefits of  plant-filled study spaces
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured above you can see the setup that I have with my plants.
College has definitely been one of the most stressful times in my life. I tried many different hobbies in order to cope with the stress, and gardening seemed to be the only thing that stuck. I find nothing but tranquility when I’m in a space that I’ve customized with plants that I find express my personality. Most importantly, I’ve found that having plants in a study space has many positive benefits!
Studies have shown that having plants in a study space increases concentration and memory. Being college students, we are trying so hard to remember formulas, theories and when the next exam is. Having plants in your environment can help with that! Because plants are aesthetically pleasing, they increase a person’s concentration.
A study done at the University of Michigan showed that the effects of nature on a person increased their memory retention up to twenty percent! They stimulate the brain, thus increasing mental cognition and performance.
It’s easy to experience fits of depression while in college because of the intense stress and work load. Flowers have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety and thus making the person less likely to fall into a depression. Having flowers can increase your overall happiness and make you feel more relaxed.
The act of actually taking care of the plants is also a stress reliever! Personally, I feel very calm but also productive when I am gardening. At times when I don’t have time to go to the gym and workout, this gives me some sort of physical exercise.
Studies also have shown that people that have more nature-surrounded lifestyles tend to have a better outlook of life. Being surrounded by nature has immense effects on positive mental health. “People who spend time outside every day are less likely to be depressed or stressed, and thus have fewer burdens on their mental health.”
Overall, there are only positives that can come out of gardening! While it is not for everyone, you will never know until you try. This blog serves to be an intro guide to get you started.
