I also believe that Ulquiorra understands that his lanza attacks are dangerous enough for himself and Ichigo’s friends while Ichigo in the beast form don’t give a damn (it’s not like Ul cares about Ishida, but knowing Ulquiorra I think he would let Ishida just go):

Ulquiorra, the 4th Espada, who is a Hollow, never has been such a threat to Hime as Hollow Ichigo’s become.

“You will die here“ suddenly turns into “She will be allowed to live until the order comes down“. Aizen wouldn’t have returned to LN or HM due to his prime motives. And I bet Ulquiorra knew that.  But still I bet my a*s Aizen wouldn’t wanted to kill Hime cuz for him she’s just a harmless pretty girl no more. Different story for Ulq’s tho…

Even after that slap he didn’t do anything to her. 

Just imagine what Nnoitra would’ve done to her were he there instead of Ulquiorra.

Even Grimm did a better “saving”:

Beast Ichigo almost killed Ishida. There was no protection at all. There was the desire to fight and destroy Ulquiorra. To destroy anybody on Ichigo’s way.

Ori’s screams meant nothing to him.

That’s how close Ishi and Ori were to the fight, to the danger.

If not Ulquiorra that Ichi’s attack would’ve done terrible damage to everybody. Probably killing all of them.

THE IRONY:

  Funny thing: on the first encounter Ichigo was the protector and Ulqui the attacker. In the end tho Ichigo became the attacker while Ulqui - the protector.

Also Ichigo came to HM because he cared about Hime (as a friend) but in the end he forgot about her due to his transformation. Ulquiorra didn’t care at all about Hime’s feelings but in the end he was depicted as the one who still cared about her life, realizing his own feelings towards her. Even Hime’s feelings towards Ichigo.

The fallen Rukia was a primary thought for Ichigo, while saving Hime became just a long subquest.

Hi! I love your passion about ichiruki even after years from the ending of bleach, I'm still not over it too! I read that Kubo wanted that ending from the beginning and I don't know what to think about it, it seems so strange if you think about the story as a whole and about the struggles of the characters and it makes me doubt everything, like I've read a total different story from what he wrote! Do you think its true or he said it to give validation to that hurried finale?

My take on 686, at the end of the day, is that I know what I read. Authorial Intent is ultimately irrelevant if it’s in direct conflict to what’s on the page. 686 did not read like a long-planned ending to Ichigo and Rukia’s stories running parallel to each other, it read like a deliberate deconstruction of everything our main cast stood for. 

I don’t know what’s worse-- the ending being an asspull, because that just makes Kubo a lazy hack who doesn’t give enough of a shit, or the ending being planned, because that makes me think badly of him as a person. 

If he planned for all this... if his ideal for romance is one where his heroine never moves on from the very thing that held her back, the one where a point is made of her never understanding the complexities of the person she’s in love with (ergo, she’s not in love with him but the idea of him, and even more likely the idea of loving him) the one where the peak of their “romance” involved horrifying trauma for everyone present and her most egregious personal low, the one where she drops out of college to be a housewife despite her canonical intelligence and ambition... then he really is a sexist degenerate, which won’t stop me eating from his misogyny trough but it will stop me giving two shits about his canon takes on Orihime. 

If Kubo’s big ending for Rukia-- a person so steadfastly principled that her very philosophy of protection comes to influence Ichigo’s own, is for her to be complicit in historical revisionism and the cover-up of genocide, then it’s like... well... what else is left? People always go on and on about how Rukia’s a terrible mom in 686 and is totally OOC and it’s like, forget being a bad mom, Rukia is a terrible person in 686. She has war crimes on her hands. If she’s Captain Kuchiki Rukia now, she’s complicit in the rebuilding of the Soukyouku, she’s complicit in the upholding of the status quo, she’s complicit in the select record-keeping of the Kuchiki clan. Rukia’s whole deal was supposed to be for her and Ichigo to change the system-- wasn’t that Kaien’s whole thing? Isn’t a big part of Rukia’s character about carrying the torch of Kaien’s ideals? Kaien, whose philosophy of camaraderie and questioning age-old traditions came to define Rukia’s selflessness? If this is Kubo’s ending for one of the characters who wrote to occupy the role of moral compass, what does that say about him? 

If Kubo’s ending for Ichigo was always this... no, you know what? I can’t ever buy it for Ichigo. Karakura town signifies regression for Ichigo, it signifies stagnation, it signifies defeat-- his failure to protect. Why else did Tensa Zangetsu say-- look, look at this small town of yours underwater! Your soul used to have skyscrapers, Ichigo. God. God! This is Ichigo’s ending? 27 and living in his parents’ house? Ichigo, who was saving up in school to move out? Kurosaki Ichigo? Whose whole identity is that he’s shinigami? Who gets offended when people call him anything else? Fuck you. 

Uryuu’s ending is so egregious I can’t even get into it... his story was always so human in a way Ichigo’s wasn’t. All we needed for him was a soft place of belonging, all we needed was for him to know that no, no, your friends aren’t leaps and miles better than you, you’re just as good, you’re just as deserving of love and companionship... if Masaki and Isshin was the love and destiny Ichigo inherited then it’s just as implied that Ryuuken and Kanae’s romance was uryuu’s birthright... and what did it end in? Loneliness? Lonely workaholism? Not being remembered by anyone? What does that say about Kubo’s perception of love?

Renji’s Cowardice

So this is something I’ve been wanting to talk a bit about, even though I’ve commented on it to other fellow fans, but decided maybe I should make a post about it. This got longer than expected, so long post ahead:

I’m one of those few people who don’t believe Renji had feelings for Rukia, or if at all, they were so subtle, they were barely there - ‘cause they can easily be interpreted as that of friendship or siblings.

We know he certainly cared about her, they were childhood friends, helping each other through hard times, the ONLY survivors from their friend group in the Rukongai, & the only ones out of them who had reiatsu. So, obviously, they had a tight bond.

But…there was nothing more. That scene in the anime (ep. 32) where Renji stares at Rukia in the lake during his childhood memories? Filler - like most of the episode. It wasn’t in the manga. Check out chapter 98 (which also has a lot of the scenes I will mention here).

When I first watched that, I thought maybe he liked her (so then why did he hurt her?), but as I got further into the anime, no such scene ever happened again, nothing else that indicated he might like her. Then eventually I read the manga, & bam! - obviously there’d been nothing else, since the scene hadn’t been there to begin with.

So if you believe Renji was deeply in love with Rukia… Well, that’s not what I saw in the following scenes.
