Video Games vs Lit: An introduction

Over the last 600+ years, literature has changed significantly, from becoming more accessible to taking the form of a game on a screen, literature doesn’t have to be just books and walls of text. After all, the function of literature is to connect people and bring them closer, and that is exactly what video games do and have done since their inception so many years ago. They connect people by literally supporting multiplayer functions, by challenging people to work with each other to overcome challenges and have made people think and reflect and think again about strategies, etc, bring people closer every time someone achieves something new. We all know the classic scene of all the kids crowding around the one kid who is about to beat the high score or finish a really difficult game and how that kid, out of nowhere becomes extremely well known. That is what literature does and video games do the same; they connect the unlikeliest of people and create communities around them.

2017 - Nintendo releases a brand new gaming console, one that is meant to bridge the gap between mobile gaming and full console gaming. The main feature of the switch is that it supports basically everything. Players can decide to use it as ahand help device, as a separate screen with 2 controllers for multiplayr mode, as a separate screen with one controller, or even dock the screen and connect to a bigger screen for one-play or two-player mode. It is uper versatile and has become extremely popular in the last few years.

2013 - With the rise of online multiplayer modes already a normal part of the gaming experience, Xbox once again attempted to create a new gaming phenomenon, although this one didn’t fare as well as their previous endeavors. Meet Kinect, Microsoft’s direct response to the success of the Nintendo Wii. With the Kinect, the user doesn’t need a remote, plus, they can actually form a realistic looking human to be their avatar.

2006 - Sony releases the PlayStation 3 along with the PlayStation Network. The new console includes Bluetooth functionality for connecting with wireless controllers.

2006 - Sony releases the PlayStation Network as a competitor to Xbox Live. PlayStation Network not only provides online multiplayer modes but also multi-device syncing since it can be used on a host of devices, including all the PlayStation consoles, PSP, and PS Vita

2003 - The ultra-popular series Call of Duty is created and is the first shooting game to support Xbox’s Live features.

2002 - Xbox LIVE, the first online multiplayer gaming platform is born and is later changed to Xbox Live. This gaming system has spawned an entirely new form of gaming, creating more ways for people to connect and has created a community around the act of playing multiplayer video games from different locatuons around the world.

2001 - Tekken 4 is the first game that includes nearly every character talking to another character at some point in the game.

2000 - Capcom releases it’s Marvel vs. Capcom 2 game, which combines 2D characters, arenas, and 3D polygon special effects

1999 - San Fransiso Rush 2049 is the last game to ever wear the Atari Games logo as Atari Games was renamed Midway Games West and the proceeded to close its coin-op video game division.

1998 - Konami releases Dance Dance Revolution, which took off in popularity due to its new nature, and has since been the inspiration for many remakes and clones.

1996 - SNK releases the game Metal Slug, which is a run and gun type game, which is known for its humor and fast paced 2-player mode.

1995 - Mortal Kombat III is released by Midway, continuing the Mortal Kombat series

1994 - Namco releases Tekken, yet another fighting game using the template set by previous games.

1992 - Midway releases Mortal Kombat. which is a popular fighting game known for its gore and fatalities, which created a new way for players to interact with one another. Now, you didn’t just win, you pressed a special sequence of buttons to perform a special method of killing the opponent.
