Create Usb Bootable El Capitan
OS X El Capitan PWN: Uploading.TransMac: Uploading. Below are the steps needed to create an USB flash drive El Capitan bootable installer. Download the InstallMacOSX.dmg file by clicking on the OS X El Capitan 10.11 link in the Apple document 'How to get old versions of macOS'. These instructions assume this file has been downloaded to your /Downloads folder.

Create Usb Bootable El Capitan Installer
It was 2009 when Apple last released a new operating system on physical media. Things have proceeded remarkably smoothly since version 10.7 switched to download-only installers, but there are still good reasons to want an old, reliable USB stick. For instance, if you find yourself doing multiple installs, a USB drive may be faster than multiple downloads (especially if you use a USB 3.0 drive). Or maybe you need a recovery disk for older Macs that don't support the Internet Recovery feature. Whatever the reason, you're in luck, because it's not hard to make one.
As with last year, there are two ways to get it done. There's the super easy way with the graphical user interface and the only slightly less easy way that requires some light Terminal use. Here's what you need to get started.
A Mac that you have administrator access to, duh. We've created El Capitan USB stick from both Yosemite and El Capitan, but your experience with other versions may vary.
An 8GB or larger USB flash drive or an 8GB or larger partition on some other kind of external drive. For newer Macs, use a USB 3.0 drive—it makes things significantly faster.
The OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer from the Mac App Store in your Applications folder. The installer will delete itself when you install the operating system, but it can be re-downloaded if necessary.
If you want a GUI, you need the latest version of Diskmaker X app. Version 5 is the one with official El Capitan support.
Diskmaker X is free to download, but the creator accepts donations if you want to support his efforts.
The easy way
Once you've obtained all of the necessary materials, connect the USB drive to your Mac and run the Diskmaker X app. The app will offer to make installers for OS X 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11, and it should run on OS X versions all the way back to 10.7—support for 10.6 was dropped in the most recent release.
Diskmaker X has actually been around since the days of OS X 10.7 (it was previously known as Lion Diskmaker), and it's still the easiest GUI-based way to go without intimidating newbies. If you're comfortable with the command line, it's still possible to create a disk manually using a Terminal command, which we'll cover momentarily.
Select OS X 10.11 in Diskmaker X, and the app should automatically find the copy you've downloaded to your Applications folder. It will then ask you where you want to copy the files—click 'An 8GB USB thumb drive' if you have a single drive to use or 'Another kind of disk' to use a partition on a larger drive or some other kind of external drive. Choose your disk (or partition) from the list that appears, verify that you'd like to have the disk (or partition) erased, and then wait for the files to copy over. The process is outlined in screenshots above.
The only slightly less-easy way
If you don't want to use Diskmaker X, Apple has actually included a terminal command that can create an install disk for you. Assuming that you have the OS X El Capitan installer in your Applications folder and you have a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)-formatted USB drive named 'Untitled' mounted on the system, you can create an El Capitan install drive by typing the following command into the Terminal.
sudo /Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app --nointeraction
The command will erase the disk and copy the install files over. Give it some time, and your volume will soon be loaded up with not just the OS X installer but also an external recovery partition that may come in handy if your hard drive dies and you're away from an Internet connection.
Create Usb Bootable El Capitan Usb Download
Whichever method you use, you should be able to boot from your new USB drive either by changing the default Startup Disk in System Preferences or by holding down the Option key at boot and selecting the drive. Once booted, you'll be able to install or upgrade El Capitan as you normally would.
Create a bootable OS X El Capitan USB Drive: Making a bootable OS X El Capitan USB Drive is easy and doesn’t take very long at all. There are a number of benefits to creating this type of boot drive, including the fact that it makes it very easy to install a fresh copy of the operating system you have configured on it.
Another benefit is that you will have a very easy time installing an operating system on a completely separate partition or on a virtual machine. By creating a boot disk you will have fast access to a portable installation whenever you need it.
You will want to start off by connecting your flash drive to your Mac
Download and Install the latest version of DiskMakerX (or check here how to download and use DiskMaker X step by step)
Run DiskMakerX and click “Yosemite (10.10)“, as there is currently no other version available for El Capitan.
Next you will want to select the install file and in the Applications folder select “Install OS X 10.11” and click “Choose”.
Click “An 8 GB USB thumb drive” and select the flash drive you plugged into your Mac.
Click “Erase” then create the disk.
You will then need to click “Continue” and enter your administrator password when prompted.
Once the process has finished, simply click “Quit”.
You will now have a working bootable OS X El Capitan USB drive to use whenever you want. You can choose to rename the drive to “El Capitan” as opposed to “Yosemite”. Because DiskMakerX does not yet have an option for El Capitan, it will automatically name is Yosemite.

Idea To Life: Community Through Food Truck
Gardening has a power that is political and even democratic. And it is a political power that can be applied constantly, whereas one can only vote or demonstrate occasionally.
—Wendell Berry
Because of disputes over land, access to green space, and equal rights to the city, urban gardens have become a symbol of community activism and empowerment, and they are part of a contemporary grassroots movement supporting environmental justice, collective action, and equitable access to nutrition and good health. Due in part to the current swell of interest in the local food movement, since the early 2000s there has been a remarkable surge in the prevalence of community garden initiatives.
Idea To Life: Community Through Food Pyramid
But while they may be in the current media spotlight, the practice is certainly not new.
Community gardens have been part of American cities since the late-19th century. As a way to confront the congestion, economic instability, and environmental degradation that were part and parcel of turn-of-the-century urban life, residents began taking matters into their own hands—by planting school gardens, for example, or cultivating the vacant lots between buildings.
Since then, the popularity of these gardens has seen ebbs and flows in relation to the social and economic climates of particular eras. During the World Wars and the Great Depression, for example, the practice became much more widespread (as a result of the “Victory Gardens” encouraged by the federal government during WWII, Americans produced 40% of their own food!) only to diminish once again as the nation’s devastated economy began to recover. The 1970s witnessed another economic crisis that made its mark on urban cores. As soaring food prices coincided with the birth of the modern environmental movementand the availability of open spaces as a result of failed urban renewal projects, community gardens began to reemerge as part of a movement to reclaim ownership of the “public commons.” Most recently, after the 2009 recession, there was a 19% increase in the prevalence of community gardens as a strategy for supplementing food costs and cultivating local resilience.
While their ability to improve food access alone, especially among lower-income and under-served communities, is proof enough of their enduring value, community gardens are—and have always been—about much more than food. Indeed, they embody powerful placemaking strategies that are showing to have multiple and measurable impacts.
Here are some of the many interrelated benefits that that these collectively held (and sometimescontested) spaces can bring to urban neighborhoods:
Physical and mental health
Idea To Life: Community Through Food Stamps
Across many fields and disciplines, researchers are finally beginning to see the powerful connections between social capital and healthy places. Given the physical exertion that gardening requires and the increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, the connection between community gardens and physical health is clear. But recent research is has also underscored the links between community gardens and mental health. For city dwellers, connecting with nature—a proven remedy for stress and depression—can be quite difficult. A recent UK study shows that people who gardened for at least 30 minutes a week had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) as well as higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of tension and stress. “With an increasing number of people residing in urban areas, a decline in the number of homes with gardens, and the increased risk for mental ill health associated with urban living,” researchers write, “allotment gardening might play an important role in promoting mental well-being in people residing in urban areas.”
Educational opportunities and community partnerships
The educational programming that takes place at many community gardens can give neighbors the opportunity to learn about everything from nutrition and culinary skills to environmental sustainability, business principles, and job skills. The Sustainable Flatbush Healing Herb Garden, for example, holds hands-on demonstrations to highlight basic urban agricultural techniques, and it offers community workshops on using herbs in culinary practice and as medicine. As detailed on the garden's ioby funding page, the project sought to provide volunteer and internship opportunities, while also pursuing partnerships with community members, neighborhood schools, and social service organizations.
Land for community gardens can be publicly or privately held, and the programs often involve partnerships with outside entities such as nonprofits, youth or senior programs, prisons, housing developments, or schools. The national farm-to-school network is a large-scale model of how gardening can be an educational tool, an economic catalyst, and a vehicle for strong public-private partnerships. There are farm-to-school programs in every state, where the fruits and vegetables grown on school grounds supplement meals served in the cafeteria.
Safety and crime reduction
There is evidence linking community gardens to improved safety in neighborhoods – showing that crime decreases in neighborhoods as the amount of green space increases. Two reports in the Journal of Environment and Behavior studied (1) the impact nature has on mental fatigue (often a precursor of aggression and violence), and (2) the relationship between green space and inner city crime rates. The research determined that aggression and violence was “significantly lower among those people who lived near some green space than those who lived in more barren conditions.”
Echoing Jane Jacob’s now-famous idea of “eyes on the street,” a 2012 study in Philadelphia comparing two clusters of vacant lots—one that was cultivated and one that wasn’t—showed that greening the vacant lots made nearby residents feel significantly safer, and the newly cultivated lots could be linked to a decrease in gun crimes in the area.
'Our theory is that transforming vacant lots from a space overgrown with vegetation and filled with trash to a clean and green space may make it difficult for people to hide illegal guns and conduct other illegal activities such as drug use in or near the space. Additionally, green space may encourage community cohesion.' – Eugenia C. Garvin, MD, lead author of Penn Study on greening vacant lots to reduce violent crime
Cultural Heritage and Exchange
Shared gardens have played a powerful role in helping communities who have experienced the traumas of displacement, such as new immigrants and refugees. For these populations, shared gardens can be a vehicle for re-establishing a sense of place, building new social ties, and celebrating and maintaining cultural traditions. Little Haiti Garden in Miami, for example, enables the area’s Haitian community to use traditional farming techniques in producing often-unavailable crops such as callaloo and calabaza. Community gardens like Little Haiti Garden, which is located in one of the poorest districts in the country, also maintain a strong economic development component. By holding gardening and nutrition workshops, teaching retail skills, and selling produce to the neighborhood, local markets, and restaurants, the garden helps brings additional money and food into the households that need it.
In Fresno, California, seven state-funded community gardens seek to boost mental health within the area's large refugee, immigrant, and low-income populations. “The thinking of community leaders and health professionals,” writes Patricia Leigh Brown of the New York Times, “is that gardens can help foster resiliency and a sense of purpose for refugees, especially older ones, who are often isolated by language and poverty and experiencing depression and post-traumatic stress. Immigrant families often struggle to meet insurance co-payments, and culturally attuned therapists are in short supply.”
***
Wendell Berry once quipped that it may be too easy to underestimate the power of a garden. 'A garden,' he continued, 'is a solution that leads to other solutions. It is part of the limitless pattern of good health and good sense.'
Since their origin in US cities at the end of the 19th century, the popularity of community gardens has tended to increase during periods of crisis. And as we face new challenges such as the rising rates of chronic health issues like obesity, heart disease, and depression, along with socioeconomic issues like high unemployment rates and increasing food insecurity, it makes sense that community garden initiatives are experiencing a nationwide resurgence.
Even beyond issues of food access, community gardens are about building social ties, sharing skills and experience, learning about nature and culture, and taking proactive measures to improve our physical and mental well-being. One thing is certain: As our urban environments become home to more and more people, community gardens will continue to be a powerful, place-based tool for creating local connections and enacting positive global change.

Early life
Martha Ingalls Carrier was born as Martha Allen between 1643 and 1650 to Andrew Allen (1623–1690), one of the original 23 settlers of Andover and Faith Ingalls (1623–1690) in Andover, Massachusetts. She was the eldest of six and had three younger sisters named Mary (1644–1695), Sarah (1646–1716) and Hannah (1652–1698) and two younger brothers named Andrew (1657–1690) and John (1661–1690). Her family was one of the founding families of Andover.(2)
Martha Ingalls Carrier (born Allen) (between 1643 and 1650 – 19 August 1692) was a Puritan Feminist and was accused and convicted of being a witch during the 1692 Salem witch trials.

On 7 May 1674 when she was 7 months pregnant with her eldest child, she married Thomas Carrier (1630–1739) who was a recently arrived 7 foot tall Welsh bondservant. After the marriage, they relocated to neighboring Billerica which was located about ten miles southwest of Andover and lived in the north part of town near John Rogers and her sister Mary. She had a total of 8 children:(3)

They however returned to Andover in 1688 where they lived in poverty and were dependent on the family farm to supply them with a living. Martha nursed her father and two brothers when an outbreak of smallpox spread through the city in 1690, but could not save them. Thereby she became a land owner in her own right. Her husband and four of her children also contracted the disease, however her husband and two of her children survived the disease. They were however accused of bringing the disease to the city, but investigation has revealed that the disease was most likely caused by new immigrants from England. Thirteen people perished during the epidemic including two of Martha's children and the Carriers were barred from entering public places.(4)
A map of Salem Village (1692)
Her husband was described as a man of good humor and cheerful disposition, but he was prone to laziness and indolence. Which meant that on top of the usual chores of a Puritan housewife, Martha also took on many of her husband's duties which made her stand out and resemble a feminist in some sort. Most notably is that she insisted on arguing and bargaining with male neighbors, something unusual in the strictly stratified society of early colonial America.
The Salem witch trials
Accusations and arrest
Martha was accused of witchcraft in May 1692 by a group of young women known as the Salem Girls who consisted of Susanna Sheldon, Mary Walcott, Elizabeth Hubbard and Ann Putnam Jr, who would travel through Essex County, Massachusetts rooting out suspected witches by engaging in a theatrical display. Whether the court actually believed this act is still open to debate, but what is known is that when Martha was confronted by the girls, she acted as any rational person would when faced with their wild behavior. The girls accused her of leading a 300 strong witch army, using her occult powers to murder and afflict people with terrible diseases and of being promised the dubious position of Queen of Hell. Martha vehemently denied these charges and in turn charged her accusers with insanity.(5)
Some however believe that she was accused of witchcraft because she was a niece of the Reverent Francis Dane of Andover who condemned the witch hunts and trials. Evidence points out that over one third of the Salem accused were related to him or his wife in some way. Other historians have blamed her accusation on causes ranging from a conspiracy against Andover's proprietary families to reaction against threats to patriarchal inheritance.
A warrant was signed for Martha's arrest and she was arrested on 28 May 1692 along with her sister Mary and brother-in-law Roger Toothaker and their daughter Margaret Toothaker (born 1683). Martha's young children were sent to prison with her, apparently in hopes that their confinement would cause her to confess. The first accused 'witch' in Andover, Martha was accused of witchcraft by her neighbor Benjamin Abbot after he fell sick and blamed his illness on her bewitching himthey after they had gotten into an argument that involved a land dispute. She was taken to jail and placed in chains to keep her spirit from roaming. Three days later, Martha underwent the examination that always preceded the witchcraft trials, but she maintained her innocence.(6)
Trial and conviction
Martha's trial started on 31 May 1692 and she was transported to the Salem Village Meeting House to face the accusing girls, overviewed by judges John Hathorne, Jonathan Corwin, and Bartholomew Gedney. When Martha entered the room, the girls fell to the floor, writhing with cries of agony.(7)
File:SalemWitchcraftTrial.jpg
The Salem Village Meeting House served as the courtroom during the trial.
Neighbors were summoned to air their grievances and all of which seemed petty and unimpressive yet almost believable. Compared to the original tales of rebellions and murder and more about personal revenge with no consideration of the human life at stake. One local witness even complained that Martha’s craft caused him to lose a fistfight to her son Richard. Several other women who were also accused confessed that Martha had led them to practice witchcraft. Ann Foster said she rode on a stick with Martha to Salem Village, her nephew Allen Toothaker testified that he lost two of his livestock, attributing their deaths to Martha. Samuel Preston blamed the death of one of his cows on Martha stating that they'd had a disagreement and she'd placed a hex on the animal. Other Andover citizens used her as a scapegoat for their supposed witchcraft and she soon became the principal name mentioned whenever a new person was accused.(8)
On June 28, 1692, a summons for witnesses against Martha included Samuel Preston Jr, Phoebe Chandler and John Rogers. Phoebe Chandler (born 1681) testified by claiming: I was struck deaf, and could hear no prayer, nor singing, till the last two or three words of the singing' during a Sabbath Day meeting.(9)
During the trial, the Salem Girls screamed before the court that they could see the ghosts of the thirteen Andover smallpox victims.
It is false and a shame for you to mind what these say, that are out of their wits!
”
Martha Carrier's response to the accusations of the Salem Girls during her trial, 2 August 1692.
Her trial was also fully transcribed at the direction of Cotton Mather, who believed this case to represent the strongest case for the use of spectral evidence. The evidence he found persuasive was the testimony of Martha's 18-year-old son Richard Carrier and her 7 year old daughter Sarah Carrier that she made them become witches to haunt others at her direction. However, John Proctor wrote governor William Phips that he witnessed these children's torture in the jail where he was also imprisoned. The children were reportedly hung by their heels 'until the blood was ready to come out of their noses' or until they said what their interrogators wanted to hear.(10)
Throughout all this, Martha remained defiant and stubborn. She did not confess while many others around her did so she might save her life. There is a possibility that she simply did not expect the outcome of the trials would lead to her execution, as she was one of the first Andover citizens accused and clearly believed the proceedings were a ridiculous invention of a group of adolescents. Others, seeing the punishment meted out to Martha, quickly confessed to outrageously trumped up charges, often naming Martha as a principal ringleader in return for clemency. It is possible that Martha may have possessed a special kind of courage in refusing to falsely implicate other members of the community. She even accused the court of complicity in her plotting.(11)
Reverend Cotton Mather (1663–1728) was a key figure during the trial and called Martha a rampant hag.
In refusing to submit to the wishes of the unanimously male judges, reverends and politicians who gave the hysteria legitimacy. Martha did something women in Puritan America rarely dared: she stood up to male authority figures wielding not only physical power, but spiritual authority and she spoke her mind.(12)
Her actions against the court however didn't save her as she, another woman and four other men were found guilty by the court for witchcraft and sentenced to death by hanging on 5 August 1692. The harsh sentence of death handed down to witches refusing to confess reflected the threat to the status quo evident in Martha’s act of protest. It could be argued that Martha Carrier was not only an early feminist, but also a martyr defending her rights and honor against false accusation and tyranny.(13)
Martha's execution
On 19 August 1692, Martha was taken in the back of a cart to Gallows Hill in Salem. Cheering crowds lined the streets and gathered at the scaffold to witness the hanging of Martha and the four men who were also convicted of witchcraft. Martha however never gave up as even from the scaffold, her voice was heard asserting her innocence refusing to confess to a falsehood so filthy. Her body was dragged to a common grave between the rocks about two feet deep where she joined the bodies of Reverend George Burroughs and John Willard.(14)
Aftermath
In 1711, her family received a small amount of recompense from the Massachusetts government for her conviction: 7 pounds and 6 shillings. The Massachusetts government also apologized to Thomas Carrier for the hanging of his wife and reversed the conviction. The Salem documents themselves even reveal that her crime was not witchcraft but an independence of mind and an unsubmissive character.(15)
Legacy
Martha Carrier is viewed as one of the earliest feminists in America and has inspired hundreds of people. Martha was an outspoken women in an era when women were meant to be quite and docile. Twenty benches stand in a Memorial for the victims in a downtown park in Salem, one for each who were killed in the hysteria.(16)

Martha Carrier was a woman from Andover who was accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials.
MarthaIngalls Allen was born between 1643 and 1650 to Andrew Allen Sr andFaith Ingalls in Andover, Massachusetts.
OnMay 7, 1674, Martha Ingalls Allen married a Welsh indentured servantnamed Thomas Carrier and gave birth to their first child just twomonths later, meaning that they had conceived the child out ofwedlock and had thereby committed the crime of fornication.
The couple went on to have at least six known children, possibly more, although the names and birthdates of only five children are documented because the others are believed to have died young:
Richard Carrier born July 19, 1674 Andrew Carrier born April 27, 1677 Jane Carrier born July 23, 1680 (died one month later) Thomas Carrier born July 18, 1682 Sarah Carrier born November 17, 1684 Hannah Carrier born July 12, 1689
Thefamily first lived in the south-east part of Billerica but laterlived in the northern part of town on High Street next to JohnRogers.
Thefamily may have been banished from Billerica at some point since townrecords indicate that in 1676 they had been ordered to either pay asurety of 20 shillings per week or leave the town, according to anarticle in the Lowell Sun newspaper:
“In 1676, Thomas and Martha Carrier and family were told by selectmen to leave town forthwith or pay a surety of 20 shillings per week if they wanted to stay. Selectman Edward Hurd, who’s wife is a descendant from the family, said town records aren’t clear but he believes that ‘a member of the family had the smallpox virus’ and town officials didn’t want them to be a burden on their neighbors.”
According to Henry AllenHazen in his book History of Billerica, Massachusetts, the Carrierfamily remained in Billerica for a while after because, in Novemberof 1677, Thomas Carrier was assigned to clear brush in the south-eastpart of town, during the town’s annual brush-cutting project, and hethen took the “oath of fidelity” on February 4, 1678 with 24other Billerica residents.
TheCarrier family eventually left Billerica and moved to Andoversometime between 1684 and 1690 and stayed in the house of Martha’sbrother, Andrew Allen (Goss 87; Hazen 22).
In late 1690, a smallpox outbreak occurred in Andover and Martha and several of her children came down with the illness.
TheAndover town selectmen suggested that the Carriers had brought thedisease to Andover and notified Martha’s brother and brother-in-lawthat the town would not care for them, according to this extract fromthe town records in a book titled Historical Sketches of Andover:
“To Samuel Holt, Andrew Allen and John Allen, Neighbors and friends – We the subscribers of Andover have been informed that your sister Carrier and some of her children are smitten with that contagious disease the small-pox and some have been so inconsiderate as to think that the care of them belongs to the select men of Andover which does not, for they took care when first they came to town to warn them out again and have attended the law therein: and shall only take care that they do not spread the distemper with wicked carelessness which we are afraid they have already done: you had best take what care you can about them, nature and religion requiring of it. We hope we have done faithfully in this information and are your friends and servants. Dated 14th Oct. 1690” (Historical Sketches 202).
Theselectmen later issued a warrant that essentially quarantined thefamily and required the constable to deliver whatever they may needduring their confinement, according to the Historical Sketches ofAndover:
“To Walter Wright Constable: Whereas it has pleased God to visit those of the widow Allen’s family which she hath taken into her house with that contagious disease the small-pox, it being as we think part of our duty to prevent the spreading of sd distemper we therefore require you in their majesties’ names to warn sd family not to go near any house so as to endanger them by sd infection nor to come to the public meeting till they may come with safety to others: but what they want let them acquaint you with: which provide for them out of their own estates. Dated the 4: 9: 1690” (Historical Sketches 202-203).
Morethan a dozen Andover residents died of smallpox that year, includingsix members of the Allen family.
Martha Carrier & the Salem Witch Trials:
On May 28, 1692, Joseph Houlton and John Walcott filed a complaint against Martha Carrier, Elizabeth Fosdick, Wilmot Redd, Sarah Rice, Elizabeth Howe, John Alden, William Proctor, John Flood, Arthur Abott and Martha Carrier’s sister, Mary Toothaker, and Mary’s daughter Martha Emerson.
Carrierwas arrested that same day by Andover constable John Ballard andtaken to jail.
On May 31, 1692, Martha Carrier was examined by Judge John Hathorne and Judge Jonathan Corwin at Ingersoll’s Tavern in Salem Village.
During the examination, Abigail Williams, Elizabeth Hubbard, Susannah Sheldon, Mary Walcott, and Ann Putnam Jr, accused Carrier of hurting them and trying to force them to sign the Devil’s book, which Carrier denied, according to court records:
“(Judge:) Abigail Williams, who hurts you?
(Abigail Williams:) Goody Carrier of Andover.
(Judge:) Elizabeth Hubbard, who hurts you?
(Elizabeth Hubbard:) Goody Carrier
(Judge:) Susannah Sheldon, who hurts you?
(Susannah Sheldon:) Goody Carrier, she bites me, pinches me, & tells me she would cut my throat, if I did not sign her book.
Mary Walcot said she afflicted her & brought the book to her.
(Judge:) What do you say to this you are charged with?
(Martha Carrier:) I have not done it.” (SWP No. 24.3)
Theafflicted girls then accused Martha Carrier of killing 13 people inAndover, which she responded to by telling the judges that “Itis a shameful thing that you should mind these folks that are out oftheir wits” (SWP No. 24.3).
Whenthe girls began to cry out that they could see the ghosts of hervictims in the courtroom, Carrier responded “You lie, I am wronged”(SWP No. 24.3).
After afflicted girl Mercy Lewis fell into a violent fit, the judges ordered Martha Carrier’s feet and hands to be bound by a rope to prevent her from hurting them any further, after which the court transcriber, who many historians believe was Samuel Parris, wrote in the court record: “Note. As soon as she was well bound they all had strange & sudden ease” (SWP No. 24.3).
Manysources believe that the girl’s accusations of Carrier killing 13people in Andover was a reference to the smallpox outbreak that hadkilled around a dozen people in Andover, which the town officials hadblamed on the Carrier family.
Afterthe examination was over, Martha Carrier was indicted on two chargesof witchcraft, for afflicting Mary Walcott and Elizabeth Hubbard, andwas brought back to jail.
OnJuly 1, two of the afflicted girls, Elizabeth Hubbard and MaryWalcott, testified that they had been afflicted for a long time by awoman who told them her name was Carrier and that she lived inAndover.
Hubbardand Walcott both stated that she continued to afflict them on the dayof Carrier’s examination by pinching, pricking and choking them andthe others girls and they believe that if the judges had not boundCarrier she would have killed them.
Noone else in Andover was accused of witchcraft until mid-July whenconstable John Ballard began to suspect that his ill wife had beenbewitched and asked two of the afflicted girls to visit Andover andfind the offending witch.
Thetwo girls, who were not named but were mostly likely Mary Walcott andElizabeth Hubbard, visited Ballard’s home where they said they sawthe spectre of Ann Foster, a 72-year-old widow from Andover, afflicting Elizabeth Ballard.
OnJuly 18, 1692, after Ann Foster had been arrested on charges ofwitchcraft and had confessed to the crime, she was examined for athird time and accused Martha Carrier of becoming a witch six yearsago, stating that Carrier frequently brought her to witch meetings atSalem Village where she flew on a stick and had told her she hadbewitched James Hobb’s child to death three or four years ago.
Foster’sconfession and examinations were an important moment in the trialsbecause they seem to have caused the Andover villagers to panic andbegin accusing others in the same way Tituba’s confession did back inMarch of that year, according to Benjamin C. Ray in his book Satanand Salem:
“For the magistrates, Ann Foster’s several examinations were as pivotal as Tituba’s for Salem Village because Foster revealed the scope of Satan’s activity at the beginning of the extensive Andover phase of accusations, hence the magistrate’s multiple interrogations. Each time Foster added more detail, saying Martha Carrier had bewitched another child to death and that the devil would set up his kingdom in Salem Village. Her third examination conveyed the alarming revelation that there were ‘three hundred & five (witches) in the whole country, & that they would ruin that place ye village.’ She concluded by saying that the witches in Salem Village told her ‘they would afflict there to set up the Devil’s kingdom.’”
Theday after this examination, Joseph Ballard accused Foster’s daughter,Mary Lacey Sr and her daughter Mary Lacey Jr, and arrested them.
LaceyJr’s examination was held on July 21 during which she accused MarthaCarrier of being a witch, stating that she had murdered severalchildren by stabbing them in the heart with pins and knitting needlesand also added that “Goody Carrier told me the Devil said to hershe should be a queen in hell” (SWP No. 87.2).
Alsoon July 21, a warrant was issued for Martha’s teenage sons, Richardand Andrew Carrier, and they were arrested by constable John Ballardthe same day and brought to Beadle’s tavern in Salem.
OnJuly 22, Richard and Andrew Carrier were examined and wereuncooperative at first, as the court records indicate when it statesthat the two teens “who unto many questionspropounded returned negative answers to all” (SWP No. 25.2).
Thecourt record later states that due to the afflicted girls’ torment inthe courtroom, the Carrier boys were removed, had their hands andfeet bound, and then after returning a short while later, Richardsuddenly confessed to being a witch and admitted that the Devil toldhim to afflict the girls of Salem Village, Timothy Swan and JohnBallard’s wife:
“The afflicted persons were grievously tormented that Richard and Andrew were carried out to another chamber and their feet & hands bound a little while after Richard was brought in again Q: Richard though you have been very obstinate yet tell us how long ago it is since you ware taken in this snare. A a year last May and no more unto many questions propounded he answered affirmatively…I was to do service about the children & afflicted persons he told me also of Timothy Swan & I must give him leave to afflict him he asked my consent also to afflict Ballards wife” (SWP No. 25.2).
Richard also accused his mother, his aunt Mary Toothaker, Reverend George Burroughs, Sarah Good, Rebecca Nurse, Giles Corey, Martha Corey, John Willard, John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, Mary Lacey, Mary Bradbury and Elizabeth Howe of being witches and went on to tell an elaborate story about afflicting various people with spindles and poppets and about traveling to witch meetings at Salem village on flying sticks, horses and even on men.
Itis not known why the Carrier boys suddenly confessed but thefollowing day, on July 23, John Proctor sent a letter from jail tothe Boston clergy in which he said torture was being used against theaccused witches in order to force them to confess and specificallymentioned Richard and Andrew Carrier, according to the letter:
“Here are five persons who have lately confessed themselves to be witches, and do accuse some of us, of being along with them at a sacrament, since we were committed into close prison, which we know to be lies. Two of the 5 are (Carriers Sons) Youngmen, who would not confess any thing till they tied them neck and heels till the blood was ready to come out of their noses, and ’tis credibly believed and reported this was the occasion of making them confess that they never did, by reason they said one had been a witch a month, and another five weeks, and that their mother had made them so, who has been confined here this nine weeks” (SWP No. 107.19).

Thatsame day, Martha Emerson was examined, during which she accused heraunt, Martha Carrier, of witchcraft and told the court that Carrier’sspectre was in front of her grabbing her throat in order to stop herfrom confessing, although she later recanted these statements.
DuringMary Toothaker’s examination on July 30, she confessed to being awitch and also accused other people of witchcraft, including hersister Martha Carrier and Martha’s son Richard Carrier.
On July 30, summons were issued for witnesses to testify in Martha Carrier’s trial. The witnesses called to testify were:
Allen Toothaker Ralph Farnum Jr John Farnum Benjamin Abbot and his wife Andrew Foster Phoebe Chandler Samuel Holt Sr Samuel Preston Jr Captain Danforth John Rogers
The Trial of Martha Carrier:
On August 2, 1692, Martha Carrier’s trial began at Salem courthouse on what is now Washington Street in Salem. A number of people testified in the trial, including:
Benjamin Abbott Sarah Abbott John Rogers Phoebe Chandler Allen Toothaker Samuel Preston Elizabeth Hubbard Mary Walcott Thomas Putnam John Putnam Jr Andrew Foster
OnAugust 2, Martha Carrier’s neighbor, John Rogers, testified thatseven years ago he had a disagreement with Martha Carrier after whichshe used threatening words against him “as she often used to do”(SWP No. 24.10).

Rogersalso said that his cow suddenly stopped producing milk that summer, all of which made him suspect that Carrier was a witch and hadafflicted his livestock.
Theremaining witnesses testified the following day on August 3. On thatday, Benjamin Abbott testified that after a land dispute with MarthaCarrier about a year prior she told him she would stick as close tohim as the bark of a tree, that he would repent his behavior forseven years and threatened to hold his nose close to the grindstone.
Abbottwent on to explain that shortly after, his foot started to swell andthat he developed a pain in his side that later became a sore. WhenDr. Prescott lanced the sore “several gallons of corruption did runout as was judged & so continued about six weeks very bad”(SWP: No. 24.8).
Abbottstated that after Carrier was arrested, his health improved and hissores began to heal, making him believe “that thesaid Carrier had a great hand in my sickness & misery” (SWP:No. 24.8).
Abbott’swife, Sarah, also testified and confirmed Benjamin’s claims and alsosaid that some of their cows had died mysteriously and their othercows would sometimes come out of the woods where they were grazingwith their tongues hanging out of their mouths in a strange andfrightening manner.
Twelve-year-oldPhoebe Chandler testified that about two weeks before Martha Carrierwas arrested she had grabbed Phoebe while in the meetinghouse anddemanded to know where she lived, even though they were neighbors andPhoebe was sure Martha already knew who she was and where she lived.
Chandlerwent on to explain that later that day she was running an errand forher mother when she heard a disembodied voice in a nearby bush, whichshe said sounded like Martha Carrier, that demanded to know what shewas doing. She said she ran from the spot but returned later andheard the voice tell her she would be poisoned within two to threedays.
Chandlersaid she believed she was poisoned a few days later when she wasvisiting her sister’s farm and part of her hand and face began toswell and became painful. She also started to struggle with thefeeling of a great weight on her chest and legs, all of which lastedfor days.
Chandlersaid that after recovering, she went to meetinghouse where, afterreceiving a look from Richard Carrier, her hand began to hurt, shefelt a burning feeling in her stomach and she was temporarily struckdeaf until the congregation finished singing the Pslams.
Martha Carrier’s nephew, Allen Toothaker. testified that last March he had a physical altercation with his cousin Richard Carrier during which Martha Carrier’s spectre interfered and held Toothaker down until he yielded to his cousin and that after a disagreement with Martha Carrier during a separate incident, Toothaker said some of his farm animals mysteriously died.
Toothakeralso said that Carrier told him a four-inch-deep wound that hereceived in the war would never heal, yet, after his aunt’s arrest, the wound was suddenly healed.
SamuelPreston testified that two years ago he had a quarrel with MarthaCarrier and afterward his cow died in a mysterious manner. Afteranother quarrel with Carrier, Preston said she told him that he hadrecently lost a cow and he should soon lose another and shortly afteranother one of his cows suddenly died.
AndrewFoster testified that he had heard that when Timothy Osgood and hisbrother Samuel went to Ingersoll’s Tavern in May and met one of theafflicted girls, she asked him why he brought the three women withhim. When he asked her what women she was talking about, she answeredit was Martha Carrier, Mary Toothaker and her daughter and said thatMartha Carrier was sitting next to him on the table. He said she thenfell into a fit and her neck twisted almost completely around.
Thomas Putnam and John Putnam also testified that they had witnessed Mary Walcott, Mercy Lewis, Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam, Elizabeth Hubbard being afflicted, especially during Martha Carrier’s examination, and that if the judge had not ordered Carrier to be bound she probably would have killed them. They went on to say that the girls have been afflicted and “tormented as if all their bones would have been disjointed or bodies twisted all to pieces” several times since the examination (SWP No. 24. 17).
OnAugust 5, 1692, the jury found Martha Carrier guilty and she wassentenced to death.
OnAugust 10, 1692, Martha’s 10-year-old son, Thomas Carrier Jr, wasarrested on charges of witchcraft and examined by Judge DudleyBradstreet.
Duringthe examination, Thomas confessed to being a witch and stated thathis mother taught him how to afflict the girls of Salem Village aswell as others after she baptized him in a river and that he attendeda witch meeting with various other people who flew on sticks to themeeting.
OnAugust 11, 1692, Martha’s eight-year-old daughter, Sarah Carrier, wasalso arrested on charges of witchcraft and examined by Judge JohnHathorne.
Duringthe examination, Sarah confessed to being a witch since she was sixyears old and stated that her mother had forced her to sign a redbook, baptized her in Andrew Foster’s pasture the day before Marthawent to jail and taught her how to afflict people.
TheExecution of Martha Carrier:
On Friday, August 19, 1692, Martha Carrier, George Jacobs Sr, Reverend George Burroughs, John Willard and John Proctor. were brought by cart to Proctor’s Ledge in Salem for the execution.
MarthaCarrier and the others all declared their innocence before they werehanged, according to an entry in Judge Samuel Sewall’s diary thatday:
“This day (in the margin, Dolefull! Witchcraft) George Burrough, John Willard, Jno Procter, Martha Carrier and George Jacobs were executed at Salem, a very great number of Spectators being present. Mr. Cotton Mather was there, Mr. Sims, Hale, Noyes, Chiever, &c. All of them said they were innocent, Carrier and all. Mr. Mather says they all died by a Righteous Sentence. Mr. Burrough by his Speech, Prayer, protestation of his Innocence, did much move unthinking persons, which occasions their speaking hardly concerning his being executed” (Sewall 363).
Thebodies were cut down after they were hanged and temporarily placed ina nearby rocky crevice, according to Robert Calef in his book MoreWonders of the Invisible World:
“When he (Burroughs) was cut down, he was dragged by the halter to a hole, or grave, between the rocks, about two feet deep, his shirt and breeches being pulled off, and an old pair of trowsers of one executed put on his lower parts; he was so put in, together with Willard and Carrier, that one of his hands and his chin, and a foot of one of them, were left uncovered” (Calef 213).
Itis not known what happened to them after that since convicted witchesweren’t allowed to be buried in a graveyard and there is noevidence they were buried nearby.
Carrier’sFamily After the Salem Witch Trials:
InOctober of 1692, Cotton Mather published his book, Wonders of theInvisible World, in which he discussed Martha Carrier’s trial andsummed up her case by reiterating Mary Lacey Jr’s confession andtestimony against Carrier:
“Memorandum. This rampant hag, Martha Carrier, was the person, of whom the confessions of the witches, and of her own children among the rest, agreed, that the Devil had promised her, she should be Queen of Hell” (Mather 159).
WhenRobert Calef published his book, More Wonders of the Invisible World,in 1700 he criticized Mather for his harsh words against Carrier, stating that he seemed “pleased to call her a rampant hag,” andtheorized that Mather used this type of language solely to please thegovernment officials, who had appointed him to write the book inorder to defend the Salem Witch Trials.
OnSeptember 13, 1710, Martha’s husband, Thomas Carrier, filed apetition asking for restitution for the death of his wife and askedthat her name be cleared, according to the court records:
“To the Honorable committee sitting at Salem this 13 day of Sept. 1710 These are to inform your Honours that my wife Martha Carrier was condemned upon an accusation of witchcraft, and suffered death at Salem in the year 1692.
I paid to the Sheriff upon his demand fifty Shillings.
I paid the prison keeper upon his demand for prison fees, for my wife and four children four pounds sixteen shillings.
My humble request is that the attainder may be taken off; and that I may be considered as to the loss and damage I sustained in my estate
Total 7-6-0 – Thomas Carrier
I found my wife and children provision during their imprisonment” (SWP No. 173.10)
On October 17, 1711, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a bill clearing the names of many of the Salem Witch Trials victims, including Martha Carrier.
OnDecember 17, 1711, Carrier’s family received 7 pounds and 6 shillingsas compensation for her conviction and death.
InDecember of 1711, Thomas Carrier signed a letter, along with 33 othervictims and relatives, asking that Stephen Sewall acquire a copy ofthe 1711 act and collect their restitution on their behalf sincetraveling to Boston would be very difficult for them. Amonth later, on January 7, Thomas Carrier, as well as many othervictims and relatives, filed an order asking that his restitution becollected by Joseph Parker of Andover.
Martha’shusband, Thomas Carrier, eventually moved to Colchester, Connecticutwith his children sometime around the turn of the century and diedthere on May 16, 1736 at the age of 109 years old (HistoricalSketches of Andover 123; Genealogical and Personal Memoirs 2687).
In 1992, the Salem Witch Trials Memorial was built in Salem, Mass and a marker was established for Martha Carrier.
