Realizing it was Kayla whom he just spoken to, the Light Faye straightened in his seat as if awoken from a dream. His mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. She called him her hero, and Marshall had to bite down hard on his bottom lip to try not to spill it all out at her. How he almost was a hero… But the time had passed, and he seemed to be just Marshall again. Her weak smile was welcomed, but it saddened him.
Watching as Kayla took a seat beside him, Marshall missed as his heart beat began to become steady—as if it had been racing prior to her arrival. He’d been so focused on finding Mara again… “You don’t need to apologize to me,” the Light Faye replied solemnly before mustering up the courage to reach out for her hand and giving it an affectionate squeeze.Â
“Otherwise, I’d have to apologize for not being there for you,” he pointed, an encouraging smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “…How are the James?” he asked lowly, his head lowering involuntarily in respect.
.
Kayla too lowered her head, letting out a sad sigh, not truly knowing how to answer him. “How any family would be at the loss of a mother in a violent way like that.” She said, staring at the ground. She’d seen her adopted mother in her dying moments, had been the one to have to end her life, and while she knew it was with good reason, for the good of the pack, the memories still stung over a decade later. “Kaden is angry at the world, and Alex is falling off the rails, and their father is doing his best to hold them both together, but... the James children have always been free spirits. It’s why I’ve never put pressure on Kaden to commit to the pack.”Â
Even that brought her doubt. That maybe if she had focused more on them, then they wouldn’t be suffering in the way that they are. “I don’t know how to reach them... And with potentially a new Alpha in town, I don’t know that I can take much more bad news.” She smiled sadly. “Razor is... gone, at least. Though to my understanding his wife still remains. Their pack certainly hasn’t gone anywhere.” Quickly she shook her head, sighing. “I shouldn’t be bothering you with this crap, how are you doing? You were... missed. By a lot of people.”

Not a Long Time [Open]
@risingpeaksreblogs
The Light Faye hadn’t been feeling all that ok since the storm and the days that followed it. Even after his rescue, reuniting with his coworkers, family and Princess… Things still felt odd. He also hurt, knowing Flick was gone in such brutal way right under their noses… How could he approach Kayla now? Or Flick’s family? What would he say to Kaden?
He should had gone to work, but he felt unable to. Thankfully, he was allowed time off. Might as well, seeing how they had—right off the bat—offered it to him after everything they believed he’d gone through… Still, instead of staying home and resting, instead of seeking his fellow Light Faye, he’d end up sitting on a bus stop a mile or so away from My Alibi. “Mara, please…” he found himself praying before footsteps cut him off. “Careful!” he warned the other, pointing right in front of them. “They haven’t fixed it all up since the storm.” The sidewalk was cracked there, although it was anybody’s guess what exactly happened.
.
Kayla wished she’d never asked to see Flick’s body in the morgue, as weeks later, it was still impossible to get the image out of her head. The injuries were consistent with a werewolf attack though, but it brought no comfort. There was still nothing concrete confirming it was Razor’s attack, and even then, there was no justice or closure to get if it was him. Not with the Blood Moon pack still claiming territory, and now potentially a new Alpha with them, unless he was killed by human hands.
She wasn’t paying attention when she heard Marshall’s voice and she jumped a little, narrowly missing tripping over.
“My hero...” She said, smiling weakly before it fell from her face. When she heard he was back she’d meant to check in with him, but she made excuses. That his family would want to see him, his Princess, his work mates, then he’d need his rest... Then she realised she’d been making excuses. Sitting down beside him, she frowned. “Sorry I haven’t been by, it’s... been busy. Work and Alpha-wise.”

it hadn’t been three days since they let belle step outside the hospital that she was already in her uniform. walking around the sheriff department. marshall was disappeared and, if she was honest she thought about it too much. he had been in the hospital with her and now, he couldn’t be found anywhere. the french woman was looking at the board she had managed to pin everything to about the case she was working on. in that same moment she felt that technique could work. but if she was honest … her head was somewhere else. she turned around to spot the alpha walking towards her. belle sighed at her petition. was she able to do that ? probably not. “ okay, it’s not as easy as it may sound, hmm ” she sighed. “ bah, wait for me outside i’ll think about something ” the french woman mused.
and as, she was told belle, now dressed in her regular clothes walked outside the station. “ i’ll drive us there and well, we’ll see how we get you to see her body ” she said walking to her car. she made sure she had her badge on, that would be the only thing that could probably allow them to even walk inside the morgue.
.
Kayla opened her mouth to argue with Belle, to insist that she could find some way to make it happen. Instead, the deputy asked her to wait outside and she nodded, leaning against the building as she checked her phone, trying to call Marshall for the millionth time. She’d heard whispers that he was missing but... she didn’t want to believe it. She couldn’t let herself believe it.
She smiled sadly but appreciatively at Belle as she offered to drive them, climbing in the passenger seat and sighing as Belle started up the engine. “I really do appreciate this... The James children need closure, and I need to see what kind of injuries she has, to know if this is... pack business or not.” She said softly. They sat in silence for a few moments, Kayla finally broaching the subject. “... Is what they’re saying true? Is Marshall missing as well?”

“If Deputy Marshall isn’t available, then I need to speak to any other deputy that’s working on the James case!” Kayla snapped as she stood at the front counter of the Sheriff’s Department, impatient and angry. She was never like this usually, but she was overwhelmed. Not only was her beta dead, but the missing people had lead to her taking in a foster child, who would be arriving later that day - she didn’t have the time to be wasting on deputies who weren’t in the know.
Spotting Deputy Emera, she ignored the man at the front desk and walked over to her. “Please. I need to be taken to see Felicity James’ body. Your other deputies won’t listen to me.” She didn’t want to cause any problems, but she needed to know what happened to her.

shortfusedkj:
Although Kaden had not really spoken much to his Alpha, especially in recent years, there was just this instinctual feeling in his gut as the woman approached - even as he refused to sit up and look in her direction before she spoke; even going so far as to call him by the nickname of his initials. There was the slightest of growls deep in his chest as the woman began to speak about being alone and solitude not being the best course of action.
“How I’m doing? I’m so… pissed off, I can’t even think straight - but even all that anger is just… drowning. I’m angrier than I’ve ever been and I’m too… broken, to lose control like normal.” He retorted sharply. “And I honestly don’t know if that terrifies me more than if I’d just go on a wolf-bender or what the fuck ever it would be called.” He remarked and finally shifted himself to sit up and look at the woman.
It was irrational - like his entire line of thinking had been since that night, more than not - but he couldn’t help the burning in the pit of his stomach that needed to place the blame upon his Alpha’s shoulders. She was supposed to protect them all, wasn’t she? Or was all the bullshit Kiera and Razor spouted off about their pack meant to be taken as truth?
“Tell me you’re at least not buying into that bullshit about her….death.” There was a sharp catch in his throat as he forced himself to speak the word. “We know They are involved somehow. Right? Right?” He pressed.
.
Kayla just listened to him, keeping her eyes on him and letting the anger seep out in whatever way it could - it was better than him keeping it bottled up inside of him. She knew the grief of losing her own mother, though that had even more complicated feelings involved, it being Kayla herself who had to deal the final blow, at her mother’s request. There had been more guilt than anger that day, but the loss itself... that was still something she remembered.Â
“It’s raw, right now. Of course it is. But things will get easier. Once she’s released, once the snows cleared, we’ll give her a burial that she deserves. Money’s no object, we’ll take care of it all.” She couldn’t bring his mother back, after all, but she could make it as bearable as possible.
“... Razor hasn’t been seen since that night. Why he isn’t gloating if this was him... I don’t know.” She said softly, looking down as his tone got more urgent. “We can’t make a move on them without proof, without... someone who knows what happened. I’m going to go to the Sheriff’s office today, demand to see her body, try and catch a scent on it, anything I can do to get to the bottom of this.” She was sure that wasn’t what he wanted to hear, and tensed up at her next words. “Do not go hunting him down, and do not retaliate. Not until we know what happened. I can’t lose you as well, Kaden. Flick would never forgive me.”

shortfusedkj:
If you were to be unfortunate enough to live within a few doors of the James residence, in the aftermath of that terrible night, you would have been privy to the sounds of raised voices between a tired father and two broken children trying to pick up the pieces of their lives. On days when the rest of the family was out and about, you might have heard the sounds of glass bottles shattering as they were forcefully thrown into the walls before the slamming of doors signaled the young teen male storming out onto the front porch - where he would sit in silence for minutes before laying back against the wood and staring at the overhanging ceiling.
Life was just supposed to go on, but how was it supposed to go on if nothing could pad the sharp edges of his broken heart? Fury constantly drowned out by sorrow and grief. It was an amazement that he could even find the willingness to get up out of his bed - only to end up yelling at a father and sister that didn’t deserve it; didn’t deserve to put up with him. They were hurting too and he knew that. He knew that, but that didn’t stop his pain. As he laid back on the wooden porch, he heard the sounds of someone approaching, but rather than look their direction he continued glaring holes into the roof above him. “My sister and father aren’t home….” The words came out bitter. Many of the people that had come by to express their sympathies had wanted to speak to his father, or to his sister - the elder child and not her “kid” brother.
( @risingpeaksreblogs )
.
Kayla braced herself as she walked up to the house, knowing Flick’s husband was out. She had heard from the pack about the yelling, and how... getting through to the children wasn’t easy right now. Still, she had to try. Seeing Kaden lying there, she frowned, listening to his bitter tone, her heart breaking for him.
“.... I know. I came to see how you were doing, KJ.” She said softly, sitting by his feet on the porch, not wanting to crowd him too much. She hugged her knees to herself as she watched him in silence for a few moments. “I know... Being alone feels easier right now, but... it just makes things worse. I understand if you don’t want to talk, but just... I’m here if you want to.”

kayla  didn’t have  to  answer for  kelly  to  know  what  the  answer would  be.  she  let  out  a  sigh.  she  guessed it  if  she  was  honest. “  it’s  fine,  don’t  worry  about  it  ”  she  said  dismissively. her  eyes  for  a  second moving  to  her  brother.  “  i  get  it  ”  the  younger wolf  assured,  “  you  don’t  lose  anything my  asking,  right  ?  ”  she  asked, a  soft  smile  on  her  lips,  just  trying  to  ease  the  conversation.  they  had  been  alone  enough to  know  it  wasn’t  as  if  they  couldn’t  wait  for  a  while  if  that  meant  being  part  of  a  pack.  “  not  many  people  would  have  said  that  ”  she  said  softly,  looking back  at  the  alpha,  a  soft  smile  on  her  lips.  “  thank  you  either  way  ”
.
“Knowing you have an interest already means so much to me.” Kayla said, earnestly. Kelly was right - not a lot of Alphas would have said that. Most would be desperate for the numbers, especially at the risk of a war. It was a move she wouldn’t be surprised to see from Razor himself, even. But Kayla cared about each and every one of her pack. Even ones like Kaden, who were on the edges, would be welcomed with open arms if he was ever ready for it. “We do not judge on those who are turned or born, or on what has happened in their past. All we ask is a willingness to follow the rules, and we’d be happy to have you. Eventually.” Grabbing one of her notebooks she had brought with her, she scribbled out the rules, handing it over to Kelly. “Just so you know, and are ready if things ever become safer here.”

“I mean, I don—don’t disagree… but bless her… or wish her death—depends where her morality lays, I guess.” The wife of such brute was either a victim too, or a timing bomb waiting to go off. Marshall couldn’t make sense of it otherwise. “An… An Alpha.” Marshall swallowed the knot on his throat. “That feels like cheating—aren’t there rules about this?” he pouted, trying not to freak out, but feeling like he was failing. “No regulations? This is chaotic,” he jested although his voice went up a pitch.Â
As Kayla spoke further into her beliefs on marriage, however, his focus on her voice helped him regain control of himself. That was sweet—having no restrictions or expectations… He couldn’t help but wondering: if he could choose, who would he choose? He’d already fucked up his first arranged marriage, but surely the crown nor his parent would just let him be.Â
When the Alpha began to look out for him, the Light Faye offered a small smile, reaching out to take the werewolf’s hand to which he gave an affectionate squeeze. “Thank you…” He wished he could decline the offer, that he could stay there with her longer—talk the night away with the storm bellowing outside.Â
.
“There’s no rules you can’t date another Alpha. It’s not unheard of for some packs to have multiple Alphas - one will be in charge, and the other will be second in command. Or they could just be there and be respected. All packs have different ways of working, different dynamics. It’s not chaos, it’s just... whatever works best for the pack, not the species.” She explained, smiling a little at his weirded out face.
“It’s no problem. Go, before I bite you.” She teased, smiling before heading off away from him, biting her lip shyly as she walked away.Â

“His wife? … How does that work…. if you don’t mind me asking?” As far as he knew, packs had one Alpha, a few Betas and a few Omegas, so how when it came to their partners, Marshall wondered how they went about choosing. For example, Light Faye had to marry within their caste and as far as he knew, it worked the same with the Dark Faye… “I imagine you… have to pick from a lower… class? I mean, do you even have to marry?” he threw in the last question to try to deflect any weird way his question may come off. But hey, if she didn’t need someone to be of a certain caste… that was interesting information.
Marshall had to laugh when Kayla admitted she didn’t understand the royalty thing. “Kinda like the human one… just more intense, a lot less evolved,” the Light Faye joked, chuckling to himself. Smiling when Kayla pointed out he was obviously freaking out, the Light Faye shrugged. “I couldn’t lie to you if I wanted to.”
.
Kayla snorted, despite the seriousness of their prior conversation, shaking her head. “The heart wants what it wants, I assume. Why anyone would want someone so sadistic I don’t know, but he does have a wife, she’s also an Alpha.” But he continued on, talking about lower classes and marriages, and she put a hand over her face, giggling. She didn’t mean to make fun of him, but she’d never seen someone so... old fashioned before.Â
“We marry the same way any human or other creature might. We’re attracted to someone, we date them, eventually we marry them if we feel like to. Mama never married - said the pack were handful enough for her.” She smiled to herself, remembering the old Alpha. “I don’t care what anyone’s species or type is... One day hopefully I’ll find someone.”
“No, you can’t lie to me. Which is why I’m saying to take a break, grab some of the food and then go and sit with your Princess. Being in hospital is no fun.”

“I understand,” Marshall assured with a nod of his head. The Blood Moon Pack was unpredictable. Instead of at least asking for a temporary treaty, they now seemed more willing than ever to attack. The Light Faye could see the thought behind the actions, but with the ruthless blizzard outside, how could they not see reason behind—at the very least—temporary peace and safety for all? “… He needs to go,” the Light Faye told her. “He can’t make it into this hospital. I will call the few guards we have from Town Hall and see if the McKenna Family can help us out.”
Kayla’s touch was soothing, even if the moment was tense as she seemed worried about Eponine. “She did… Curiously, Blood Moon Betas brought her here,” Marshall admitted. “We’re fine down here. Secure yourselves until we have pinpointed Razor,” the Light Faye encouraged. “Rachel is down here and I’ll speak to Zara or her people,” he promised with an encouraging smile. “I’m barely doing anything. I’m just asking for help like a scared little shit,” Marshall tried to dismiss her worry with a jest, although he was feeling tired, all he had to do was get everyone on the same page. After it, he could relax until his next shift… Or so he chose to believe.
.
“I’ve had people looking out for him - his pack is here, his wife is here, but from what I can tell, he hasn’t been seen.” She sighed, shaking her head. It was unnerving, and made no sense. “I’ve tried to offer an olive branch to the ... less hostile members, but while some have appreciated the help, others just glare and walk off. They’re not as united as he seems to like to think.” She shrugged.
“You aren’t a scared little shit. She’s important to you, even if I don’t understand the whole... royalty thing.” She chuckled, sadly. “I can speak to the hunters, I can help in any way you need. You’re making jokes which tells me you’re either completely relaxed, or you’re completely freaking out. And let me tell you that noone in this building is relaxed.”

a soft  smile  pulled the  corners  of  her  lips  at  her  words,  she  was  glad  to  be  there  too.  kelly  was  surprised  about  the  other  tossing  snacks at  her.  yet  she  took  the  bag  in  her  hands.  she  wasn’t  hungry. “  i  don’t  need  it,  save  it  for  someone else  ”  she  mused,  handing the  bag  back  to  the  alpha  sitting next  to  her.
kelly’s gaze  stayed  on  kayla  as  she  looked around,  probably  looking at  the  people in  her  pack.  the  younger werewolf  sighed,  as  she  took  her  legs  to  her  chest.  “  we  haven’t been  part  of  a  pack  since  our  parents  died  ”  kelly  sighed,  “  well,  i  don’t  think  my  brother remembers any part of  it  so,  it’s  been  a  while  ”  she  shrugged.  “  i  don’t  know  how  this  works  or  how  it’s  supposed to  be  done  ”  the  young  lawyer mused,   “  is there a  way  to  join  your  pack  ?  ” she finally asked.  “ i know it’s not the best time to ask ”
.
Kayla nodded, putting the snacks back in her bag, and looking back at the other. “You can make memories in a pack at any age. I wasn’t turned until I was sixteen. I’m sure your brother will be fine.” She said, softly. And then came the question that most Alphas would love to hear, she can still remember the excitement on her mother’s face when she asked to join.
But right now, it was the worst thing to ask. She looked up and out at the hospital lobby, looking around at the assortment of people. At the betas and omegas of the Blood Moon pack just glaring at her, as if waiting for the order to attack. She looked back down at her lap.
“... There are ways, but unfortunately I can’t offer you anything right now.” She said sadly, her heart breaking. “And not because I don’t want to. But because it would put a gigantic target on yours and your brother’s backs, and I am not about to put you at risk. Your life has been hard enough from what you’ve already told me.” She put her hand over the other’s, reassuringly. “Should the Blood Moon Pack ever move on, I would take you without a second thought. But this isn’t your war to fight, Kelly.”

Hearing that he deserved a break was well-received, he was too lazy to be humble and the chaos was draining him rapidly. He tried taking some energy from the small orderly moments like the stations being set up to help patients and refugees alike. Of the harmony that fell over them when townies worked together and felt into their appropriate beat. Small moments, almost insignificant to most or that went under the radar yet made him feel very powerful. “It’s fine, the other Light Faye will return to relieve the deputies soon,” Marshall promised. “We need the order so we’re more than happy to take this on.”
However, night time would be difficult. “I’m sorry,” he apologized, knowing now he was cutting into her sleep. When she asked what he needed, the Light Faye took it as it was safe for them to speak freely, trusting her senses. “I’ll try to buy a few extra sleeping hours later on though,” Marshall vowed. “I asked the coven for protection spells and the such and I’m going to try talking to hunters to help keep order within the humans… You got time to spare to help with the non-humans?” he asked, trying not to plead. “Heads up though, Razor tried to kill our Princess… Not sure what his current location is either.” He smiled then, because the alternative was ugly crying and he didn’t want Kayla to see him looking so pathetic.
.
“So long as you’re sure...” Kayla frowned, glancing around constantly to make sure they were safe from any prying ears. Being asked if they could help with the non-humans, she bit her lip. “We’ll try, but... We’re stretched a little thin. As many of us as possible have the same room, and even then we’re rotating guard duty, just in case any of the Blood Moon pack choose being here as the perfect time to strike. We’re already travelling in pairs since Razor informed me it was kill on site.”Â
But then Marshall mentioned Razor himself, and she put a hand on Marshall’s arm, looking at him seriously. She knew him well enough to know his affiliation with his Princess. “Is she safe? Did she make it to the hospital?” She asked, softly. “In any case, you should be with her, not working downstairs. I’ll send two betas down, you do what you need to. And we’ll find a way to keep an eye on the non-humans. You are one person, Marshall. Don’t take it all on yourself.”

After reaching out to the local coven, Marshall returned to the laundry for a while. The people running it were the low-class Light Faye that composed the majority of the Wilson’s employees. Thing was, they were also the people that watched Marshall grow, the ones that helped raise him, nursed him when he was sick and tutored him in the ways of being a Noble Light Faye. Given them a break to eat and sleep, Marshall took over along with another two human deputies.Â
By the time the line died down and people began to bunker in to deal with their current reality, the Wilson butler returned to bring the deputies hot coffee and some bread. Seeing Kayla approach, Marshall served an extra cup of coffee and offered it to her with a friendly smile, happy to see her safe in the hospital. “… That sounds great actually, can I be invited?” the Light Faye jested. “We had orders to come help the medical staff. All hands on deck type of thing.” Grabbing two blankets from the dryer, Marshall handed them to Kayla. “You got a moment?” he questioned.Â
.
“You deserve a break as well, I can send some of my betas down if you all need some time to yourself - I know Flick’s been bullying people into helping out.” She said, smiling sadly. Though being downstairs in an isolated area probably wouldn’t be ideal for her betas, not with the Blood Moon pack in the same building, but she was trying to keep things normal as best she could, lest they worry about exactly why she didn’t want them to be alone.
“I have several, I was about to try and get some sleep, but I don’t know if that’ll happen.” She explained, walking away from the laundry with him, sipping her coffee. “What do you need?”

Kayla quietly left the room one of her seniors was in - she was freaking out over missing class because of the storm, and was having a panic attack, and as soon as she’d sensed it, she was there, trying to get her to do controlled breathing, and she’d finally calmed her enough to leave, with promises that she’d sit and tutor her some the following day, if they were still stuck there. Looking outside the window, she was sure that’d be the case.
Offering to get her another blanket, she headed down to the laundry room, and smiled sadly at Marshall. “I don’t suppose you have another blanket you can spare? One of my students is a mess right now, so I gave her my one. If not it’s okay, the pack can just huddle.” She chuckled, trying to find the positive, because she was anxious enough with both packs being under one roof. “... How are you doing? I thought you’d be at the town hall.”

the younger werewolf let out a sigh in relief. “ thanks ” she smiled warmly at the other, now allowing herself to sit down next to the alpha. her eyes moved to look at her brother as the woman asked about him. “ yeah ” she nodded, “ i really thought we wouldn’t be able to get here ” kelly confessed, a soft smile on her lips at the thought they were both safe now. “ i wanted to ask you about your pack … ”
.
“I’m glad you were able to get here.” She nodded, opening up one of her bags and pulling out some snacks, tossing them over to the other wolf. She had to hope the supplies would be enough to keep everyone going, because if food started becoming an issue, there’d be a lot of fires to put out. Metaphorical, she hoped, as opposed to physical.
As she asked about her pack, she smiled sadly, looking over at some of her betas, asleep, whilst others stayed awake, on watch for the rival pack. It wasn’t the best time to be asked about it, but she didn’t want to scare the other unless it was for her own protection. “Of course, you can ask me anything.” She nodded. “What would you like to know?”

kelly was sitting in the hallway, she could feel how the tension inside those walls increased by the second. she was somehow relaxed as her brother's hand managed to fall asleep by her side. if he was okay, she would be too, at least that was how it had worked for the longest time. it was the second her eyes landed on the local alpha that kelly got up, fast but, trying not to wake the other davis up. “ hey ” she smiled, walking closer to the woman. “ i had been wanting to ask you something ”
Kayla had been on high alert once she got to the hospital, checking on her betas, wanting to make sure they all got there, and trying to make sure they all kept together, close to Flick’s workstation so if the worst happened and anyone tried to attack, she could assist. She’d even seen a few omegas and betas she didn’t recognise filter through, assumably Razor’s, and she’d calmly offered them assistance, help finding somewhere to go, and while some accepted her help, most didn’t.Â
Now she was finally curling up to grab a little sleep for herself when she heard a voice approaching her, and she looked up, smiling softly at Kelly, remembering their last conversation.
“Hey Kelly... Sure, come sit down and we can talk.” She nodded, glancing over at the spot she’d just been in. “Is that your brother?”

A low growl vibrated in his throat as the other attempted to make a deal with him… still, the Alpha decided to muse the stranger and let go of the pitiful excuse for a werewolf in hi grip. “Talk before I break your jaw, pup,” Razor threatened, facing her and giving the clueless werewolf what she wanted: all of his undivided attention.

“I am no pup.” She said firmly, her eyes finally turning red, narrowing them at her rival. “Now that’s over with, what the hell did you want to see me for?”
