Quality of Life in California vs. Texas: A Migration Story
Introduction
The migration from California to Texas has been a significant demographic trend over the past decade. With California's high cost of living, regulatory environment, and political climate, many have sought greener pastures in Texas, known for its lower taxes, business-friendly policies, and growing job market. But what does this move mean for the quality of life for these migrants? Let's explore.
Economic Comparisons
GDP and Employment: California boasts the largest economy in the US with a GDP of $4.080 trillion, followed by Texas at $2.695 trillion. However, Texas's unemployment rate stands at a lower 4.2% compared to California's 5.4%. This indicates a potentially more robust job market in Texas, with more people employed relative to their population.
Cost of Living: One of the primary reasons for the move is the stark difference in living costs. In California, the median home price is nearly $800,000, while in Texas, it's around $350,000, offering significantly more housing for less money. Additionally, everyday expenses like groceries, utilities, and transportation are cheaper in Texas, providing a financial relief for many.
Taxes: Texas has no state income tax, which can feel like a pay raise for Californians used to high state taxes. However, property taxes in Texas are among the highest in the nation, which might come as a shock to newcomers but is often offset by the lack of income tax.
Quality of Life Metrics
Safety: Examining crime rates, California reports 499.5 violent crimes per 100,000 people, while Texas has 431.9, suggesting a slightly safer environment in Texas by this measure. Non-violent crimes, predominantly property crimes, are high in both states but don't necessarily correlate directly with the quality of life experienced daily.
Healthcare and Education: California invests heavily in healthcare and education, leading to a higher quality in these services. However, Texas provides these services at a lower cost, which can be a significant advantage for families looking to stretch their dollars further.
Cultural and Lifestyle Differences: California's appeal includes its cultural diversity, scenic beauty, and progressive policies. Texas, on the other hand, is known for its southern hospitality, wide-open spaces, and a more conservative approach to governance. The lifestyle in Texas might be more relaxed and family-friendly for some, with less traffic congestion in major cities compared to California's notorious bottlenecks.
Impact on Californians Moving to Texas
Economic Freedom: Many Californians report an immediate sense of financial freedom due to lower living expenses and no state income tax. This can lead to improved quality of life through better housing, savings, or investments in education or starting businesses.
Political and Social Environment: For those frustrated with California's political landscape, Texas offers a different perspective with its conservative governance. However, this change isn't universally welcomed; some miss the progressive policies and cultural vibrancy of California.
Community and Integration: Integration into Texas communities can vary. While some find the transition seamless, others face the challenge of adapting to a different pace of life and cultural norms. The welcoming nature of Texans is often cited as a positive aspect, though there are pockets where newcomers might feel like outsiders.
Conclusion
The move from California to Texas has been motivated by economic factors, political climates, and lifestyle preferences. Many Californians are finding that Texas offers a better quality of life in terms of affordability, job opportunities, and a different cultural experience. However, this isn't a one-size-fits-all solution; personal values, career needs, and social preferences play significant roles.
For those who prioritize economic advantages and a lower cost of living, Texas indeed seems to provide an improved quality of life. Yet, for others, the trade-offs might include missing California's environmental policies, cultural diversity, or the state's natural beauty. Ultimately, whether life is "better" after moving depends on individual priorities and how well one adapts to the Lone Star State's unique offerings.

Course In Review
The course title Emerging Multimedia Techn signified that the focus would be on new technology. Understanding what this course is and how a student’s experience for the January term for the year 2016.  The course focused on social implication of technology and new technology in various fields.  The instructor provoked deep conversations and superficial ones. This is a review is from a student perspective of any preconceived ideas that existed before taking the class. There will be a breakdown of what was learned and what tools and techniques were helpful in learning. Finally there will be a breakdown of the key takeaways that students could experience.  The hope is that readers of this will gain understanding of the course and the expectations to have of the course.
As any class sets to start the average student draws conclusions about the work in the class based on the name of the course he has chosen.   The name mostly, can give insight to the purpose and deliverables of the class.  Emerging Technologies is no different in this manner; I looked at the name and believed I would learn about new technologies that are futuristic like flying cars and hovering skateboards.   I then began to remember that this course is on the multimedia design track and that I would not be learning about Back II the Future technology.
The first thing I began to learn was that was that technology is not just about a device or gadget that lights up or turns something on.  Technology existing or emerging is not defined by the physical presence of it.  One of the first projects that accomplished this was the game we had created.  As I created this game I realized that technology is not just being touched it is also an experience.  The game was very interesting; I was able to create a TIC TAC TOE game.  After I had created that game I created a checkers game utilizing the same method. Here both I and the instructor were able to have a true social experience in a virtual world.  This was how I learned that there is more to technology than hardware created.
The other thing I learned through taking this course is how I think about technology.  Prior to taking this class I saw much of the technology as intrusive and invasive.  This type of mindsets can be useful when considering security.  I had an original line of thinking that caused me to treat technology as a hostel tool.  It was to be used but kept at arm’s length and not given too much influence in my life. I learned that it has to managed and not controlled.  During the blog project I learned that you’re connected as long as you use any form of technology and that fear must be countered with manipulation of it.
By the end of the course I have become more aware of how to see technology.  That it is not the technology that should be feared because it has not control over its use.  This led me to understand that I am in control as I manage it more efficiently and monitor it.  Along with understanding control of technology I gained an appreciation for the various forms it comes in.  This class has informed my opinion and enriched my experience has a whole and I am better for having gone through this experience.

Dream Or Reality

Dream or Reality
Virtual reality is technology that has been adapted to the cell phone.  The concept is that you place your smart phone in the frame of the VR headset which looks almost like a view finder and you look through a 3D goggles to give the user a virtual reality experience that is immersive.
This is currently a fad because there is a search for uses and need.  The technology is expanding in use from reading a virtual magazine video through national geographic or life.  Here the user not only sees images that represent the story but they hear and see the participants in the stories creation.  I think because of the price point and the vast amount of uses this could become a trend not just a fad.
For me I would love to see this grow because it will only expand the scope of how internet content is attained and will give me a new field to learn about.  I like it because it expands the types of content a web designer will create and also the types of media we use.  It feels like it has the potential to become far more than what it is and that means growth.

Fad Or Trend
This is an informational about Fad vs. Trend.  There will be a breakdown of how these works in emerging technology.  There will be a reflective look at various examples to bring to an understanding of what both a fad and a trend look like.  In the end there will be a reflection of wearables in technology and is it becoming trend or is it a fad.
Looking at two pieces of technology and ask the question was it a fad or a trend. Trends of course are just a sustained use of something a good example of it is music player technology.  This is a trend because it is constantly evolving and transforming not changing what we get just how we get it.  We started getting music outside of live play on a phonograph.  What was interesting about that is how it has evolved since. Music has changed from perforated paper to digital streaming of live radio.  While the format has changed over the years the goal has not changed have music portable.  And with each technological advancement that goal has been furthered.  While music players are easily seen as a trend the same cannot be said for wearables.
Wearables are a fascinating subject because the take a product that was used to make someone look good and repurpose it for information.  At first glance this may seem like the perfect match and it could be if society saw it the same way as the creators of such product see it.  This is not the case for a wearable known as Google Glass.  Google glass failed commercially because there was no clear purpose to own or buy such a product. (Altman, 2015)  You see fads are just cool looking things that have no real purpose and that is what defines it.  This is the challenge for all wearables, getting people to see the need and for me it also has to have a sensible look and function in a way that people would find useful.
Today’s tech that is successful will always use past tool man has used and change them into a new use while at the same time making the current use better.  This is what separates a fad from a trend.  Trends capitalize on a use that exists and makes it better.  An example is going from the Walkman to CD player to an iPod to now live streaming is growing.  In the end it is all about getting the music but it is the method that has changed.  Fads do not have a door into the future because to start with they have no real purpose.
