Final Typografika’22 Poster/Brochure
Here are the final front and back pages to my typografika’22. The use of a monotoned black and white colour palette - although not what was intended in my colour research allows for a sophistication and depth to the piece and I am really glad I took the black and white route as it truely represents my own personal design style. I absolutely love the focal typografika image and its intention to reveal the working title slowly as and homage to the purpose of the typografika event.
I absolutely loved this assignment and paper and have picked up invaluable skills that I will be able to use throughout my creative career and in that I am so truely thankful. It has fuelled my passion for inDesign!
Thank you Hazel & George

Final Brochure Side: This is the final output for the brochure side of my publication. In its conceptual stage, ideas information hierarchy and continuity were key and were they main drivers behind design application.
Beginning with the bottom row (which is upside down), these pages are the first pages to be viewed by the reader, thus sets the publication up in terms of paragraphing styles and design systems. The typeface used throughout the publication is Carol Twombly’s Myriad - the same as the poster typografika; and utilises a variety of its type family to create different character styles to impose visual hierarchy.
The body copy throughout the publication is left indented by 14mm, which is the same width as the ‘Date and Time’ column in the workshop and speaker tables - adding linear continuity throughout the panels.
The tables themselves have been designed out of readability and evoke a professional aesthetic through the use of minimal yet thin divider lines. Utilising horizontal lines opposed to vertical also draws the veiwers eye along horizontally - from left to right dirrecting them to the neatly placed map in which the reader can place the location of events.
The map design has also been carefully considered in the way it creates visual hierarchy through colour fill. The AUT buildings that feature within the program have a textured white dot fill (the same as the typografika focal image for continuity throughout the spread). This allows the buildings to be easily distinguished from the other buildings throughout the AUT campus which are represented with a simple line outline.
The choice of how many panels the map and tables took up was also considered. As an AUT student myself, I know personally that there are a lot of campus maps throughout the buildings, thus placed more hierarchy and allocated 2 panels to the timetable opposed to the map, as the timetable for the map may not so simply be accessed. The increased 2 panels for the table also allowed for less cramping of information - aiding in visual ease.
The designers section of the publication contrasts from the rest with a white solid fill background. This also adding brightness to the otherwise black page. The body copy within this section also follows the same design rules and paragraph styles to the rest of the publication - however the names of the designers themselves have been rotated vertically to allow for a breaking up of the page, encouraging the viewer to slow down.
Finally the back cover of the brochure has been designed as a homage to the front cover, whist still providing the key information of the ‘22. The ‘22 has had the same perspective application applied however in mirror form - creating balance and harmony between the back and front cover pages.

Brochure Side: Development
Above is the development for the brochure side of the publication. The descriptors underneath explain my process and my carefully curated considerations. A full explanation of the final brochure will be provided in the next post.

Map and Tables Close Up:
This is a close up of my Map and Tables.
The map utilises the same dotted texture as the texture within the ‘Typografika’ focal image on the poster side, to add cohesion between the two pages.
The tables themselves are clean and clear, with the spreading across the two pages allowing for more breathing room thus aiding in reading lebability.

Brochure Side Initial Mockup:
Here is my first mockup from my sketch and placing it into inDesign. I think this layout really works and is clean and easy to read. I have finished the tables and the map section - with the map being created on illustrator using GIS mapping.
My next step will be developing the middle and bottom section of the brochure, and creating a paragraph style language that is cohesive throughout.

In class tutorial; Tables and Paragraph/Character Styles:
Here is my work from the in class tables and paragraph styles tutorial. I absolutely loved this tutorial as it completely opened my mind to the possibilities of inDesign. I have always been a big illustrator user up until last year when we were taught the basics on inDesign in media as well - however learning these skills has completely blown my mind and I am now even more of an inDesign advocated now. I am looking forward to using these techniques in my publication.

Brochure Side Chosen Merged Concept: Concept 2 & 3.
This is a sketch of the merging concept 2 & 3. It also has concept 1′s sketches for the feature designer pages, which I will explore more of as I go into the development of the publication.

Brochure Side Chosen Concept: Concept 2(Left) & 3(Right).
The chosen concept/s that I have chosen to take forward with me into my mockup is concept 1 and 3. I have chosen both these concepts as they both individually have ideas that I like.
I like concept 2′s layout for the schedule and the map - with the map taking up 1 panel and the timetable taking up 2. I think this is a smart decision, as from being a student at AUT - there are lots of maps around campus; therefore for a larger map they can be found on site. I would assume that a schedule would be less obvious at the event, thus having it larger and with more space will allow it to hold more heirarchy.
However Concept 3 has a nice organisation of information in terms of heirarchy; with the introduction on the first two pages - then revealing the schedule and map and then following on with information about the focal designers. Perhaps if I can shuffle the 3rd row of concept 2 and move it into the top row - this will reflect the information hierarchy in concept 3
I like concept 2 & 3′s layout for pages 1 & 2, with the introduction spread across the two pages, creating visual ease.
In terms of the layout of the information of the key designers - I have quickly explored some options in concept 1 - however I feel like it will be more beneficial to actually mock it up on inDesign.

Brochure Side Concept: Concept 3.
This concept follows the same ideas in concept 2, in reference to the first 2 pages, however goes back to the ideas of information hierarchy identified in concept 1 - with placing the map and schedule in the top section of the publication and is the first pieces of information to be revealed.
This differs from concept 1 in the way that the may has been enlarged and the schedule limited to one panel on the brochure. I feel that having an increased map size may be helpful for people limited in sight - however it may make the schedule grid more cramped. Maybe having a play around in inDesign for my mockups and development might help me establish what will work better.

Brochure Side Concept: Concept 2.
This is my second concept and differs from the first in its splitting up of the introduction, and making the Marae launch more of a note rather than a feature piece.
The way the rest of the information is presented has also shifted, with the schedule and map swapping with the feature designers information, with the feature designers now at the top, opposed to being in the middle section.
I don’t think this concept works as well as the first concept, just in terms of information hierarchy - but it was still a helpful exploration to allow me to understand this in a compare and contrast.

Brochure Side Concept: Concept 1.
This is concept 1 for my information/brochure side of the publication. This concept plays on information hierarchy; with the most relevant and time specific information first; with descriptions second. This is illustrated through the introduction of the conference on page 1&2, which then reveals a map and schedule for the conference on pages 3-6.
Further unfolding the publication are the holders of the keynote presentations and workshops, with their descriptions holding center focus of the page. You can see on the second row I have played around with a few orientations for the feature designers pages, however I feel in development I will be able to get a better gage of what works.
I really like this concept.

Final Poster Side: This is the final output for the poster side of my publication. In its conceptual stage, ideas of layering, texture and depth were inspired by all the precedents of the key keynote speakers, but specifically I took most inspiration from the works of Paula Scher.
The focal image of the poster comes from an intent of reflecting the context of the actual typografika conference which is learning the fundamentals to type and design and the way in which is crafted. Using keynote speaker Carol Twombly’s Myriad typeface; the focal text ‘Typografika’ is revealed layer by layer in a 3D isometric perspective composition. The ‘revealing of text’ is a nod to the creation of typography, with each character revealed in its consideration of curve and plane.
The use of layering in this 3 dimensional perspective plays on the themes I identified in my precedent research, with a theme of creating depth through layering being one that I held as key. Depth is also added in the textured fill of the focal image which is a white dot texture. The curvilinear dots, adding a soft and organic nature to the otherwise sharp points of the Myriad text. The dots also have a handcrafted aesthetic to them, again adding to the intention of basing this focal image around the idea of the creation of typography.
The composition of the text elements have been carefully placed in an effort to frame the focal image, whilst playing to the 4 column grid of the inner page of the publication. The perspective orientation of the focal image also creates spaces of high negative space which is the bottom left and top right corner; more information has been placed in these areas to provide compositional balance among the page.
The heading ‘Tpyografika’22′ in the top left corner has a heavier weight and increased point size to implement hierarchy as it is the main title on the page asides from the focal image.
The eye is then naturally directed to the top right of the page where the viewer is able to access all of the detailed information of the event, with a balance again of different point weights and sizes to create hierarchy within the element.
The use of a small square motif on the bottom left is there to create visual ease and directs the viewer to the next key body copy. Again a mix of point weights allow the viewer to differentiate information in the creation of a subtle heading.
Finally the viewer is directed to the social media icons which concludes the framing of the page and is placed vertically to somewhat mirror the vertical composition of the body copy on the opposite side.
Looking forward to creating my inner page now.

Creating a Grid:
Between my concept and development stage I wanted to make sure that the incrementation of the reveal of the typografika letters made sense to the viewer - as when I created the concept, I just randomly incremented the reveal. As you can see I have made a series of guide lines, which allows me to apply somewhat of a reasoned rule to the reveal incriminations.

Chosen Concepts: Rather than choosing one concept to develop, I would like to create a merge of both these concepts (Concept 3 & Concept 5) to take into my development.
Traits from concept 3 (Left Image) that I like; - The idea of revealing and creating typography as it relates to the context of the conference.
Traits from concept 5 (Right Image) that I like; - Layering and depth, which were two ideas and themes which I took from my precedent research.
